Let me start by saying that by no means does this thread advocate sinless perfection. It is entirely possible that a believer may sin and not realize it until much later. However, I wanted to see what the bible says about sanctification. I have found many verses on the subject, several which use the word "sanctified" in the past tense, alluding to the idea that it's conceivable by bthe grace of God that at least some measure of sanctification can be obtained in this life.

Romans 15:15-17

15 Nevertheless, brethren, I have written more boldly to you on some points, as reminding you, because of the grace given to me by God, 16 that I might be a minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering of the Gentiles might be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. 17 Therefore I have reason to glory in Christ Jesus in the things which pertain to God.

1 Corinthians 1:2-3

2 To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: 3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11

9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

2 Timothy 2:20-22

20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. 21 Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work. 22 Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Hebrews 10:9-10

9 then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Hebrews 10:28-30

28 Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,”[a] says the Lord. And again, “The LORD will judge His people.”

Jude 1:1-3

1 Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, 2 Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.

It is clear that, according to these verses, that at least some measure of sanctification can be obtained in this life. It is also clear that this is not something that ,an can accomplish but rather a work of God in us. While this idea may contradict what many on this site have been taught to believe, seeing as so many verses of scripture seem to allude to this, then we should at least research this for ourselves.

By the way this is not a debate thread or a thread to share your opinions but rather a thread dedicated entirely to what the bible itself speaks about sanctification. It is not a thread to push your own personal beliefs or doctrinal biases. Do the forum a favor and keep your arguments to yourself. Or better yet take them to where they might be better appreciated, like the Jerry Springer Show.

Absolutely we will be sanctified. Thats the deal. Through grace and knowledge. Amen
There is teaching in the bible that even shows a process it will happen to the ones who
resist. I prefer to cooperate myself. And those He sanctifies He will glorify..:)

You got me thinking on this a bit so I did a quick search and found this. I believe it does take an effort on our part to submit to the process of santification by obedience to His will and teachings, however total sanctification isn't absolute here, or I could be wrong no biggy for me, I just wanted to make that clear. But I hope the following helps you in your question.

To sanctify also means to set apart for holy use.* Therefore we can have verses that talk about us being sanctified already because God has set us apart for holy use.

John 10:36, "do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?"
Rom. 15:16, "to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, ministering as a priest the gospel of God, that my offering of the Gentiles might become acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit."
1 Cor. 1:2, "to the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours."
1 Cor. 6:11, "And such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God."
1 Tim. 4:4-5, "For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it is received with gratitude; 5 for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer."
Heb. 2:11, "For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren."
All that we need is given to us in Christ.* So there is one sense in which we are not yet completely formed into the image of Christ (sanctification of being made like Jesus), yet in another sense we are because we are seen as "in Christ", set apart for holy use where all of where all our spiritual needs and purposes are met through Jesus.

Thanks Consumed for you input. That's exactly what this thread is for, to peak our curiousity and inspire us to dig deeper into God's word because His opinion is the only own that counts. I could care less whether I'm right or wrong, the important thing is that we discover God's truth. :)

Sanctify: Every time I read the word sanctify, sanctified or sanctification, It only means one thing for me..... It is God setting, has set or will set APART FOR HIM... Santification is God setting that He sanctifies APART FOR HIMSELF!! It is like God is LAYING CLAIM on what HE WANTS!! If God wants me, he cannot use me as I am, I am too dirty, God will take me, and SEPERATE ME FROM EVIL TO HIMSELF! That is sanctification. HIS SANCTIFICATION! I CANNOT DO IT! I CAN ONLY LONG FOR IT, AND THEN HE CAN DO IT IF HE WANTS! Does He want too? YES THAT IS WHY HE CALLS YOU! If you think you have a say in your sanctification, you are terribly mistaken. YOU HAVE NO SAY!!! God offers it, God OFFERS SANCTIFICATION TO ANY PERSON THAT WANTS IT! How? By CALLING YOU! The call is not the sanctification it is the BEGINNING OF SANCTIFICATION! Now yoou hear teh call, do you want it....YES! Then GO GET IT!!! How? Just FOLLOW THE HOLY SPIRIT. The moment God calls you He knows you do not have a clue where to go, so he send you a GUIDE that will LEAD YOU IN TRUTH!! And that WLAKING IN TRUTH AFTER THE HOLY SPIRIT, IS THE SACTIFICATION! If you now PERSEVERE, ENDURE UNTILL THE END ...THEN YOU SHALL BE SAVED... Sanctification COMPLETE!! And you are at your DESTINY where you were called too... SAINTSHIP! Now you are as pure as God Himself. 1 John 3. And you endured by the LEAD of the Holy Spirit to Saintship... Romans 1..CALLED TO BE SAINTS!! God does not call a sinner to be less sinner, he calls a sinner to repent FROM ALL SIN,, to be saint...SAINT: Morally blameless and spiritually PURE! Now you are only sinles, and not perfect yet.... NOW God gives you something else through HIS APPOINTED and ANNOINTED Teachers... To perfecting you unto a perfect man. EPH 4:11 to 13... The Word says these people were APPO
INTED BY GOD HIMSELF ...FOR THE PERFECTING OF THE SAINTS... Now how can they perfect an already sinless person if they are not perfect themselves? And that is why the WHOLE Body of CHRIST is erfect. SAnctified THROUGH His Blood and Resuurected with HIS HOLY LIFE HERE ON EARTH, FOREVER!! Jesus Himself maintains HIS CHURCH, And He does o theough SANCTIFICATION, Jesus SET APART His people to become ONE WITH HIM. AFTER THEY WERE PERFECTED!!!! Not before. Read Eph 4:11 to 13 and see how the Saints become perfect and SEE there is NO SPOT in that church not even ONE!!! Look at this...Eph 4:11 to 13...
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
And read this.... Just how thorough Jesus does this sanctification.... Eph 5:25 to 27...Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
Oh man that Satan saying... through the blood of Jesus we LOOK pure... There is a MASSIVE difference between looking pure and being MADE PURE BY JESUS! And This verse does not say HE HIDES US BEHIND THE BLOOD!!! The verse says, HE PRESENTS US! The opposite of HIDE!
What can this wretched man do? REPENT AND BE BAPTIZED!!!! The only way to show you are interested in sanctification, and let God do the rest!!! All you have to do is to STOP DOING when He tells you too, and Later you will know His Voice so well the He will start telling you to DO! and you will do, becasue you get to trust Him on the WAY... The WAY is Jesus. You are walking BEHIND THE SPIRIT, untill YOU WALK IN THE SPIRIT! And that transition is a process, called SANCTIFICATION!! And at the END of SANTIFICATION IS THE REBIRTH!!! AT THE END OF SANCTIFICATION IS THE ...NOW YOU ARE SAVED!...You are not saved by following the Spirit 99%, then you are still short by 1%. And that means you did not go to the END! The END OF YOU IS THE BEGINNING OF JESUS! Sanctification is 100% or 0% Those that were sanctified 100% is with God and the others did not persevere, and they NEVER changed places with Jesus. You have to ARRIVE IN GOD to be send BY GOD... The calling is calling not sending!! God does not call and send at the same time, He calls, arms and sends! That is it. The Gift is WITH God not on the way! We have to PASS THROUGH JESUS! not almost through.
Thank you for this interesting post, and may God ...Will God do this...
Here is the promise in HIS OWN WORDS...1 Thes 5:22 to 24... Abstain from all appearance of evil. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
May God help us and sanctify us wholly for HIS GLORY!!!! Amen!!

Sanctified means to be set apart. God has sanctified us already by setting us apart for his good work. But we also look to become sanctified. set apart by our living. The goal being to look mor elike Christ as we grow (mature) in him.

As for the verses you used. good verses. i would just like to look at one right now.

Think of the corinthian church.

1. They were deep in sexual sin.
2. They were fighting over who it was they were following, and looking to men not Christ.
3. Paul called them babes. Who should be teaching others. but still needs fed themselves. But they can't take meat, they still need milk.

Yet Paul said even in this state they were sanctified by Christ.

something to ponder on.

I think sanctification is one part and glorification another. Didnt Paul say he died daily, and also that we were changed
from glory to glory. But first we have to come out from the world and be set apart for His use. :) In John 17 Jesus said
we were sanctified by truth. Romans 12.

EG At last we agree on something, Remember this verses... Hebrews 2:10...For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee. And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.
So even on our sanctification WAY we are all of one, and He will not be ashamed to call us brethren... AND HE WILL DECLARE... HERE AM I AND THE CHILDREN GOD GAVE ME>>> This is BIG!

Rom 12:1I plead to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that all of you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2And be not conformed to this world: but be all of you transformed by the renewing of your mind, that all of you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God

That shows some effort on my part by me.

I agree that the word "sanctify" means to be set apart for God's personal use. However, there is one thing that weighs my mind.

God knows the heart. He knows whether are not we are submitted to the Holy Spirit or submitted to the flesh. How can He trust us with His work, which is basically saving lives from eternal damnation - the most important work anyone can ever do, how can he trust us unless we are fully submitted to the will of God and the voice of the Holy Spirit?

Everyday we witness on these boards people being dominated by the flesh and how it causes bitter feelings and deep division. This is why I feel that sanctification is not some trivial topic but rather it is one of the most important.

Are people ready for ministry just because they memorized a number of verses and the basics of their favorite doctrine? Or should they wait until they the fruits of the Holy Spirit are made manifest through sanctification.

This why we must get to God's heart concerning this matter and not some man made doctrine or tradition. Souls are on the line!

Yes it is big. And it is all made possible by one thing. Christ's sacrificial death on the cross. it is his blood which sanctifies us. We could never be good enough, or do anything to earn this right to be called Gods children.

I think scripture points out this very thing. It gives qualification for those who are made in charge over us. and who teach us. And knowing scripture verses is just a small part of this qualification.
