Default What does the bible say about sticking up for a friend?

What does the bible say about sticking up for a friend, or does it say anything at all about it? I am curious because I always thought it was right, but now I think it might not be what God wants us to do. Any scriptures that might apply? Thanks.
I waited patiently for the Lord;... He lifted me out of the slimy pit.. he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.
    (Psalm 40:1-3 NIV)

I remeber reading about what you ask in my older bible.
It has some books that are no longer in the newer bibles.
I believe it was in the books of wisdom, I remember being greatful for the knowladge given, not just in what one is asked as a friend, but also what is defined as a good friend.
Ill look for it tonight and try and post later, but be patient, it is a busy time in our house right now.

    God bless

Here are some relevant and clear cut scriptures:
    Prov.17

[17] A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

    Prov.27

[5] Open rebuke is better than secret love.
[6] Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
    John.15

[13] Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Matt.6:14-15 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Consider what our Lord did for his friends and what he said to them.
Joh 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Joh 15:14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
Joh 15:15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

I am struggling with this also, I find it hard to sit and watch someone being mocked. Sometimes people can be so mean to one and other.

I will stick up for people i don't even know, if i witness wrong doing it really bothers me if i don't speak up, i am looking for the line in the sand on this.

I will only get involved in what i witness, but i am wondering if jumping on the offender is the right thing. I mean i would never be rude, just try to reason with them.

I am going to talk with God about this.

Thank you guys for those great answers! Pickles, thanks and there's no rush. I think the one scripture that Tribesman and 1christianwarrior pointed out about laying one's life down for his friends (John 15:13) nails it right on the head for me, but I am still curious as to what Pickles might come up with.

Loveme1, thats exactly why I asked this question. It seemed to me that a freind was being mocked and he wasn't here to defend himself so I tried to reason with the person and they now hate me even though I never said anything mean or degrading to them. I only showed them how what they said was uncalled for and unfair (of course thats not how that person sees it).

    God bless you all.

    Proverbs 18:24
There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother

    Proverbs 27:9
The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense.

    Ecclesiastes 4:9–12
Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken

I just came out of a large season where I stuck up for a friend against the greatest onslaught. She was attacked by a lt of people in my work place, but they came at her not because she was in error, but because they had personal dislike for her. I watched as they conived and plotted, lied and defamed her, and in the end what it came down to was I needed to stand for truth. I believe God wants us to expose the darkness, what is done in secret, and protect the innocent. If she had of done something wrong i still would have supported her but there is consequence for our actions, but to watch these people hate her and report her for things that they were doing themselves only to a much greater level, taught me to stand up for what is right, and to confront correctly, and in the face of losing my own reputation, standing against evil. Very cool experience. Can be tough, can damage your reputation (which was very good in my case) but the strengthening and fortifying in the inner man is well worth it.

Zero, its very nice to see that you protect and defend your friends.

When i have been in those kind of situations it has been useful to me to focus too in the "mocker" and in what bible say how to deal with them not only in my friends but i have not the answer so when you find it i would appreciate an advice.

You can stick up for a friend,if everything is done according to God's ways, which we should always point out to people the importance of doing good by verbal words, and their behavior is wrong.

But if your friend provoked it by wrong behavior, then sticking up for them would be wrong, and you would have to tell them the importance of doing good.

Always stand up for what is right.

If your friend is in the right, stand up for him.
