Amen. True. All by "faith which worketh through love" (Gal. 5:6). In Erie PA Scott R. Harrington

Confession of Dositheus 1672 AD from Jerusalem.

Decree IX. We believe no one to be saved without faith. And by faith we mean the right notion that is in us concerning God and divine things, which, working by love, that is to say, by (observing) the Divine commandments, justifieth us with Christ; and without this (faith) it is impossible to please God.

Decree XIII. We believe a man to be not simply justified through faith alone, but through faith which worketh through love, that is to say, through faith and works. But [the notion] that faith fulfilling the function of a hand layeth hold on the righteousness which is in Christ, and applieth it unto us for salvation, we know to be far from all Orthodoxy. For faith so understood would be possible in all, and so none could miss salvation, which is obviously false. But on the contrary, we rather believe that it is not the correlative of faith, but the faith which is in us, justifieth through works, with Christ. But we regard works not as witnesses certifying our calling, but as being fruits in themselves, through which faith becometh efficacious, and as in themselves meriting, through the Divine promises, that each of the Faithful may received what is done through his own body, whether it be good of bad, in truth.

Amen. Paul tells us that after we (those in Christ) heard the word of truth, The Gospel of our salvation. And after having believed (trusted or had faith in those words), we were given the HS as a promise, and this promise is the seal of our inheritance (salvation) until the day of redemption (the day of our resurrection and entrance into eternity.)

He then goes on how we received this salvation. It is through grace we were saved, Not of ourselves by doing any work. By Gods grace. Paul then informs us what happens afterword. We (those born again and given eternal life) were saved to do the work God created us to do. But Paul never claimed we would be perfect. He tells us not to grieve the HS, who again he calls our seal.

Paul makes it clear in Eph. We were saved by faith in the gospel. After we have faith, we are given the HS, who is our seal of approval until we get to heaven. It is not by our own deeds that we are saved by obeying some set of rules and regulations or sacramental system of works. But by our faith through his grace. And since we are sealed by God himself. We can not work our way out of salvation, or to earn salvation after we get it. But, like our earthly fathers, we can grieve our seal when we turn and go astray.

Dear scott:

14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? (james 2: 14)

as we see context of the verse you posted is people who claim to have faith. but have zero works. James is asking a question. Can their faith save them? no. why? their faith is dead. they never had any faith.

I get really tired of hearing about this “you can’t work your way to heaven”. And if you mention law the churches points a threatening finger and yells “legalism”.

We are mortal, born that way, God is Holy. God gave us a way to live with Him forever through blood, and that is grace. So lets get on with it.

The next step is to use the blessing of Christ’s saving blood by repentance for our sins, those we know. His grace takes care, then, of the sins we don’t know of. You can’t live a life that embraces sin, that doesn’t work with law, and have grace. The Holy Spirit within us has to be listened to, the Holy Spirit is of God.

While we are not saved by our own works, grace by no means makes void the Law
Romans 3:31
(31) Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.
Romans 6:1-2
(1) What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
(2) God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

The new covenant is written on the heart
Hebrews 8:10
(10) For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

The Law of God is written upon the heart and lived out in the life. The Law of God is a transcript of the character of God. We are to become like Christ
1 Peter 2:21
(21) For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

What you have just done is just placed yourself back under law. And according to the law, you are condemned. Because no one can fulfill the law. No one will live a sin free life. thus no one could be saved.

Your right in that no one can say they are saved and not change (have no work) for their faith would be dead, Your wrong in assuming we must add our works to the work of the cross in order to be saved. That would make salvation by a merit system through works. not as a gift through the work of Christ.

The Bible says there are 3 steps to salvation
Romans 5:10
(10) For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

The first step has already been mentioned the 2nd step is now that we are surrendered to God we become servants of righteousness
Romans 6:16
(16) Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
We are to surrender daily
1 Corinthians 15:31
(31) I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.

God works in us so that we are overcomers
Philippians 2:13
(13) For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
Revelation 2:11
(11) He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
Revelation 2:17
(17) He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

The good works spoken of in Eph.2:10 are in fact the fruit of the Spirit, caused by God's quickening of His elect. They are not works intended to merit anything, they are works of praise and glory to God, flowing from grateful and circumcised hearts.

Deut.30

[6] And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.
Jer.31

[33] But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
[34] And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
Gal.5

[22] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
[23] Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Eph.1

[11] In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
[12] That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
Phil.1

[11] Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.
Col.3

[15] And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
Heb.8

[7] For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
[8] For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
[9] Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
[10] For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
[11] And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
[12] For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
[13] In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.
