Also strictly speaking I am under every bishop and patriarch just as they are under the Pope (we do still have Patriarchs in Jerusalem, Antioch, etc just so you know). But the separation can also be attributed to the Byzantines antagonism towards the West. Empress Theodora (Saint Theodora to you) for example deposed Pope Saint Silverius because he refused to remove the anathema his predecessor had placed on Patriarch Anthimus I of Constantinople (a Monophysite). This antagonism continued until Blessed Saint Charlemagne forged an empire to rival the Byzantines and was proclaimed Imperator Romanorum by the Pope allowing the See of Rome to conduct it's affairs without fear of intervention from the Byzantines.

Also I would point out that in the sense of "universal" the Catholic Church surely meets the definition better. Especially here in America where most Orthodox churches are composed of ethnic immigrants with Mass conducted in their language, often times with more than one Orthodox bishop in one city, and to this day the Orthodox still do not have a Western rite. Put simply the Orthodox are exporting Eastern Christian practice and liturgy into Western culture, which doesn't work too well as you can see by the small number of Orthodox Christians in Western countries.

Catholicism on the other hand has a number of Eastern rites, the Marionites being the oldest, having never split from the Holy See.

Also don't forget it was because of the blood of Catholics that there's even a Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem today, and the Byzantine Empire and many areas of Orthodox dominance only stood as long as they did because they were propped up by 300 years of Catholic Crusades against the Muslims.
You are dead wrong when you say "the Orthodox still do not have a Western rite." We have a Western rite, most of them are a part of the Antiochian archdiocese, here, read this: http://www.westernorthodox.com/western-rite But the Catholic do not accept all 7 Ecumenical Councils because if they did they would have holy icons in most of their churches.

Gonna have to make a new thread about this, this is off topic.

Looking at it it seems to simply be a tweaked version of the Tridentine Rite (something I'm very familiar with). Also we do accept all seven Ecumenical councils and we do have icons, but we also have statuary (something unique to the West), stained glass windows can be called Icons for example.

But your right we will need a new thread on this.
