Christopher Hitchens, the prominent atheist/essayist, died recently. Hitchens, reputation notwithstanding, was the second atheist, after Richard Dawkins, to laud the KJV in honour of the 400th anniversary of its translation. Delivering the eulogy at his father's funeral, Hitchens cited the following New Testament passage:

"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good repute; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

Though some might think him to have been too abrasive and hostile towards christianty, I think he had many valid points about religion and its influence in our world. I respect/ed the man. He was very smart.

My sentiments exactly, Jordy. Not only very smart - but very literate as well. Hitchens' biblical views are on a par with other notable non-believers: Paul Dawkins and H.L. Mencken, to name a few. All three are noteworthy in expressing their deep respect and great affection for the King James Version that still, after 400 years, retains the high esteem accorded it by those who know - and appreciate - truly great English literature.

I was feeling kind of lonely here, all by myself - brooding over the lack of response(s) from KJVOnlyists and other KJV aficionados. Quo Vadis? I had almost concluded that this responselessness reflected rather poorly on the literary propensities of the CC forum readership. That is, until I read your most welcome - and eagerly awaited - reply. Oh well, different strokes for different folks, right?

For other's info, this transcript pertains to a non-adversarial discussion between Hitchens and the Unitarian minister, Marilyn Sewell of Portland, Oregon. Highly recommended - as also are the comments (both pro and con) that follow.
