2 Corinthians 5:21
God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

After looking around a bit. It looks like since Jesus's blood was enough wipe away everyone's sin, there wouldn't be any sin left for Jesus to goto Hell. Am I right?

I have this commentary that may help:

5:21. “sin offering.” The Greek is hamartia (#266 a`marti,a). It means “sin,” but it can refer to “a sin offering.” Many Greek lexicons do not mention that hamartia can mean “sin offering,” but that is one of its meanings. For example, A Concise Greek-English Dictionary of the New Testament by Barclay Neman says hamartia means, “sin” and “sin offering.” Hamartia refers to “sin offering” many times in the Septuagint (cp. Ex. 29:14, 36; 30:10; Lev. 4:3, 8, 21, 24, 25, etc.). F. F. Bruce writes about the phrase hamartian epoiesen (“made him to be a sin offering”) in The New Century Bible Commentary: “…this remarkable expression…can best be understood on the assumption that Paul had in mind the Hebrew idiom in which certain words for sin can mean not only sin, but ‘sin offering.’” We must keep in mind that Corinth was a large Greek city. Both Acts (primarily 18) and the Epistles to the Corinthians indicate that the congregation in Corinth had a large percentage of Gentiles. They, as well as many Jews, used the Septuagint as their Bible, and so would have been very familiar with the use of hamartia as “sin offering.”

Albert Barnes (Barnes’ Notes) explains that Jesus had to be a sin offering, saying he could not become “sin,” nor “a sinner,” nor “guilty.” First, Jesus could not literally become “sin.” Sin is breaking the commandments of God. No person can become “sin.” We are not “sin,” and Jesus did not become “sin” for us. Nor could Jesus have become “a sinner.” Bauer’s Greek lexicon (BDAG) treats hamartia as if it should be translated “sin” but understood as referring to “the guilty one,” i.e., the sinful one. If that were the case, then by the figure of speech metonymy, “sin” would stand for the one who had sin, i.e., the sinner himself. Thayer’s Greek lexicon does a similar thing, and says that “sin” puts the “abstract for the concrete,” using “sin” but meaning “the sinner.” Thus, both Bauer and Thayer see this verse as saying Christ becomes “a sinner” for us, but that cannot be correct. For one thing, the whole Bible testifies to the holiness and sinlessness of Christ. More to the point, however, is that if Jesus did become “a sinner,” then he could not have been our savior, because the death of one sinner does not in any way impute righteousness to another sinner. There is no merit in the death of a sinner. The only reason Christ’s sacrifice is sufficient to provide salvation for all people is that he was not a sinner. Similarly, Christ could not have become “guilty,” as if “sin” were put by metonymy for the effect of sin, which is guilt. Again, one guilty person cannot atone for the life of another guilty person. The correct conclusion, and one that Barnes arrives at, is that Christ is a “sin-offering.” He was sinless, and because of that fact he could give his life as an offering to God for the sin of others. The New Testament in the Language of the People by Charles Williams is one version that has “sin offering” in 2 Cor. 5:21.

That Jesus was a sin offering for us shows us the great love, grace, and mercy of God. It truly confirms Psalm 103:10: “He [God] does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.” We all deserve death, in fact, well deserve it. But in His great love God provided a sacrifice that would justly provide a way for us to have everlasting life.

Jesus was perfect in nature and lived a perfect sinless life. With that perfect life He could have easily ascended back into Heaven and sat down on His thrown in great glory, because He didn't owe us anything. Instead He chose to become the "Scape Goat" and offer Himself up on our behalf as a living sacrifice for our sins. Yes...He became every sin that has ever been committed and He suffered for it as His tortured beaten body hung from the Cross. When He breathed His last breath, His Spirit left His body and all that sin died on that Cross along with the body of our Lord. The body was laid away in a tomb for 3 days and on the third day, God raised up the new glorified body of Jesus completely purged of all the sins that was placed on Him on the Cross. That's why He went to Heaven and not Hell.

This very issue used to confuse me. It was only through rejecting the Penal Substitution view of the atonement that I found my answer.

The wrath of God was not poured out on Jesus, He was simply a sin offering made on our behalf that our previous sins be forgiven (Rom 3:25).

His blood redeems us from sin.

The cleansing of His blood is only applied when we are walking in the light (1Joh 1:7)

If Jesus was punished in the place of a sinner then the punishment could not be made due again. This is why the Penal Substitution view necessitates unconditional eternal security. One error can lead to many more.

Christians do have "unconditional eternal security".

Our salvation is by "incorruptible seed".

We are "sealed" with holy spirit.

Hi dothackzero,

Here's my two cents worth.

I don't know what you believe about Hell, but if it is like most, images of flames and torment come to mind,
If it is I would suggest a study of the word every where it is used in scripture first.

From the hebrew:

she'ôl she'ôl
sheh-ole', sheh-ole'
From H7592; hades or the world of the dead (as if a subterranian retreat), including its accessories and inmates: - grave, hell, pit.

Simply put.

Sin is a transgression of the Law, or what is not of Faith. 1John 3:4 , Rom. 14:23
Jesus came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets, Mat.5:17

The wages of sin is Death, Rom. 6:23

We have all sinned and come short of the Glory of God.

He became sin who knew no sin, paid the price of that sin which is death, and was raised.
His Nature was Holy, our Nature was not, He became us, we are Crucified with Christ.
Therefore reckon yourself dead indeed to sin, but Alive unto God.

So He Literally put to death, death.

When we are baptized into Christ we are baptized into His death, and raised with Him also.
And now we Live unto God. (This is what He has done for us).

Eph 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

Eph 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
Eph 2:7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Hope this helps
Blessings

Jesus went to heaven because he knew God the Father and knew God was God and God was the Father and was his Father. We all sin, but as long as we accept Jesus as our savior and believe God is the one and only God we will go to heaven. Our sin doesn't keep us of heaven, it's the not believing in Jesus as the Son of God and God as the Father that keeps you out. God grants us unconditional love, no condemnation, forgets our sins, and never leaves us or forsakes us, including until death.

Exactly, the price was paid in full on the cross. He was a sin offering. Did all the animal sacrifices in the old testament go to hell after they died? They covered sins and Christ took them away.

Sins are not gone. The price for sin has been paid, but sin is not gone. Sin will not be gone until the third heaven and earth.

Here is a great disertation that will answer all your questions on the atonement> compliments of standingthegap.prg.

Qoute:

The Death of Christ. (Forgiveness of sins)
For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Rom5:6-8

Christ’s Death was a Sin Offering. (2Cor5:21) (He did not become sin!)
The Atonement or Reconciliation (Rom5:11, 2Cor5:18-20) is Christ offering Himself to God by dying on the Cross, shedding His Blood in order to RESTORE man to Favor, IF he will meet the Conditions God has sent forth in His Word.

The Atoning Sacrifice of Christ is the Mercy Seat, (Heb9:5) of Christ. He offered His own Blood to Purge the Sacrifice on the Altar (which in this case is the repenting soul) in order to Purify it.
How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Heb9:14
Man has been Reconciled to God, NOT God To Man! You Must Seek to be Reconciled to God through the Atoning Sacrifice of Christ. The Conditions are Repentance and Faith Proven by Deeds. (Acts26:18-20, 2Cor7:10-11, Gal5:6, Rom6:4-6)

whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, Rom3:25

The Propitiation of Christ, (1John2:2, 4:10) is the Appeasement offered to God in the Atonement so that God can Pass over Sins Previously Committed by the Repenting Soul. (Rom3:25) or ‘Expiate’ the sin.

In the Old Testament the Propitiation is the Covering of the Ark of the Covenant in the Holy of Holies, where the Blood was sprinkled on the Sacrifice to APPEASE God…..in Order that He could Accept the Offering for the sins of the people. In Salvation, Christ is the Victim, YOU are the LIVING Sacrifice offered in Repentance. (Rom12:1-2) The Blood is Sprinkled on you to Purify.

The Victim is Not Punished for the sins of someone else
God Does Not Pour Out His Wrath on Jesus
No Exchange is taking place. The Sacrifice does NOT become Sin nor is sin transferred to Christ

Strange Fire! (Num26:60-61)
The Sons of Aaron (Moses Brother) offered a Strange or Profane Fire to the Lord and were Judged.
Lesson: You Cannot approach God in the Wrong Manner and find forgiveness of Sins! Erring in your understanding of the Atoning Sacrifice of Christ and the Propitiation of His Blood will result in Eternal Consequences for your soul.

The Purpose of This Manner of Forgiveness:
Restoration of Favor
Appeasement for Sin
Example set forth to Follow

The New and Living Way!
Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Heb10:19-22

The Result of Accessing this Atonement through Repentance and Faith:
A True Heart, Made Pure
Filthiness of flesh Removed
Conscience Purged from evil

By Dying with Christ in Repentance, the Old man is Put to Death once and for all and New Man of Spirit is Born. Now Real Growth Can Happen. The Old Man Does Not Die by Degree or Gradually over time. He is Put to Death in Repentance, Done away with. The Sin Stops!

Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Rom6:4-7

This Happens in Repentance, not After, not over time. It is NOT Positional but Literal, a REAL Freedom From the Corrupting influence of sin! The Result is a New Life in the Spirit and forgiveness of sin. The heart is Made Pure by Faith working by love and the soul is Victorious over sin, the flesh and devil.
(Gal5:6, 1John5:4-5, 1Pet1:22-23) THIS is the Gift of Grace, not a Covering of sin.

You Are NOT Saved by:
Accepting Jesus as your personal Savior (Nothing in the Bible supports this)
Repeating a Prayer, called the ‘Sinners prayer’ (It Does not appear in the Bible)
Or By Admitting that you are a sinner. (You Must Repent of sin, not Confess you are a sinner!)

You are Saved by: James1:21-22
Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

The Receiving with Meekness is Repentance with godly sorry. The Implanted Word is what you Obey.

NOT WEIRD QUESTION AT ALL. HABAKKUK; 1:13 THOU ART OF PURER EYES THAN TO BEHOLD EVIL AND CANNOT LOOK ON INIQUITY. THE CREATOR HAD TO TURN FROM LOOKING AT HIS SON, BECAUSE IT SAYS RIGHT HERE IN HABAKKUK. JOHN 3:16 FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON. JESUS CHRIST GOD'S BELOVED SON HAD TO TASTE THE AGONY OF SIN AND DEATH FOR YOU AND ME. HE WHO KNEW NO SIN FELT ABANDONED, TO BECOME OUR HIGH PRIEST THAT KNOWS OUR PAIN AND SUFFERING AND BY HIS STRIPES WE ARE HEALED. HE BECAME THE SACRIFICIAL LAMB AND TASTED THE BITTERNESS, CRUELTY OF SIN AND DEATH. 11 CORINTHIANS :5:21 FOR HE HAD MADE HIM TO BE SIN FOR US, WHO KNEW NO SIN, THAT WE MIGHT BE MADE THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD IN HIM. { DEATH /SIN IS SEPERATION FROM GOD, HIS FATHER HAD TO SEPERATE HIMSELF, NOT ONLY WAS JESUS FLESH TORN HIS BACK, BUT HE FELT HIS SPIRIT BEING TORN WHEN HE CRIED WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME HE CRIED OUT FROM HIS SPIRIT. IT WAS THE ONLY TIME JESUS WAS SEPERATED FROM THE FATHER, AND NOW IS ONE WITH THE FATHER ONE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT AND ONE WITH US. HE IS NOT IN HELL BECAUSE HE AROSE IN A GLORIFIED BODY, AND THIS IS WHY HE IS THE RESSURECTION AND LIFE, SO MUCH GIVEN TO US SO MUCH LOVE, TURN OUR EYES LORD TO YOUR SCRIPTURES AND GIVE US PEACE. THANK YOU WHAT YOU DID FOR ME.

JESUS IS NOT IN HELL BECAUSE GOD IS NOT THERE AND IS IN HEAVEN. JOHN 17 SAYS I IN THE FATHER THE FATHER IN HIM AND I IN YOU. JESUS WITH ONE WITH THE FATHER IN HEAVEN READ JOHN 17. TO UNDERSTAND HIS STATUS; AND MAJESTIC AUTHORITY OVER DEATH AND HELL, JESUS HAD CONQUERED DEATH. HELL IS AN ETERNAL PLACE OF SEPERATION FROM GOD. HE AROSE AND DESCENDED INTO HEAVEN AND EVERY EYE SHALL SEE HIS RETURN, WHICH THE SIGNS ARE DIRECTING AND TTHE EARTH GRONINGS AWAITING HIS RETURN. THE LORD SAID, YOU ARE ABLE TO RECONIZE WHEN SRING IS HERE, THE FLOWER BUD BLOSSOMS, BUT YET YE CANNOT RECONIZE THE SIGNS OF THE TIMES. EVEN AS IN THE DAYS OF NOAH THEY WERE EATING AND DRINKING, EVEN SO IT SHALL BE IN THE DAY OF HIS RETURN. NO MAN KNOW WTHE DAY NOR THE HOUR, NOT EVEN THE SON. BE PREPARED AS A SPOTLESS BRIDE BRIDEGROOM AWAITING THE BELOVED, THE ONE WHO CONQUERED DEATH AND GAVE YOU AND ME ETERNAL LIFE, WATCH AND PRAY LEAST YOU FALL INTO TEMPTAIONS, FOR YOU KNOW NOT WHAT HOUR THE LORD SHALL RETURN. WORDS FROM THE HOLY BIBLE.

Heaven is the life we have when we don’t sin. Jesus doesn’t sin.

From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Matt 4:17 RSV
