Galahad, these matters have been discussed 100 times and more, and we get weary of repeating the obvious answers.

However as one of the only courteous posters you deserve at least some response. But it will be brief.

- The number of references to peter, Jesus, abraham are hardly important surely, because that "popularity" vote would have the unintended consequence of putting Abraham ahead of Jesus! I think I am right in saying however that where several disciples are listed together, Peter is always first.

- You do not mention the obvious reference to rock which is disappointing if you intended balance. The words peter and rock are the same stem, so if you accept that the conversation was in aramaic, which was indeed the first language of the less educated of the holy land, then Jesus says in Mat 16:18 either.

Simon......thou art (Meaning I shall call you) rock, and upon this rock I will build my church, or if you like.
thou art Peter and upon this Peter I will build my church.

In order to avoid the blindingly obvious some will tell you that the conversation was in Greek (nonsense Peter is recorded as speaking Galilean, a dialect of aramaic, which history records is the working language, and indeed the "fields of blood" speech say that aramaic was the language) so they try to distinguish petra and petros to say.

Thou art rock but upon this other (large) rock , I will build my church.
Except nowhere does it say other..or but.
It would therefore actually say "thou art rock and upon this (large?) rock I will build my church
In short they are splitting ungrammatical hairs. Even Calvin and Luther both thought peter was the rock and Special.
The obvious reality is that the greek translator put petros /petra in for effect, not to change the meaning.

From the beginning to end Matthew tries to present the gospel as scripture fulfilled, and refers back to the OT, and quotes Jesus doing that, a number of times because he knew his audience would understand the biblical references.
Jesus is also built up numerous times as a davidic King, and associates himself with that kingdom, for example riding a donkey as Solomon had.

So the obvious meaning of "keys of the kingdom" TO HIS AUDIENCE OF JEWS would be a direct reference back to Hezekiah in Isaiah, where the "keys of the kingdom" are clearly represented as the symbol of an office of steward (similar to prime minister, a role with succession handed down). Keys may well mean something else to todays audience, cutting themselves off from tradition, but that is what it would have meant to the jews who were obsessive about finding meaning from OT.

So when Jesus gives the "keys of the kingdom" to peter , it is no accident, it is direct reference back to the priministerial role of Davidic times, an office with succession, and that is how the jews would have understood it. So there it is in the old testament.

Finally when it comes to succession, consider the truth of early christianity. That it was handed down. which is the meaning of paradosis, tradition. And we see in the early church, the appointing of succession of bishops, the empowerment of clergy. Do you really think Jesus would want his church to die out after one generation? The new testament came later. Paul says "stay true to the tradition which we taught you by word of mouth and letter" and later the new testament says "the pillar of truth is the church"

I reply out of courtesy.

I have been away from this thread for awhile.

Here's my latest post. I hope you will consider replying to it. (Posted it earlier today.)

The Rock
Several Catholics have pointed out to me the NUMBER of New Testament passages that mention Peter shows that Peter was unique among all the other apostles.

I would point out that the NUMBER of passages that mention Abraham is far greater than the combined number of those that mention both Peter and Jesus!

Consider –
Is Peter the rock in the Old Testament? No. Christ is the Rock, as taught by the New Testament

Isaiah 28:16
Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
Psalms 118:22

Matthew 21:42
Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?

1 Peter 2:4-8
To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

1 Corinthians 10:44
And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

The Keys
What door do the keys unlock? The door of the Kingdom of Heaven. How does Peter unlock the door to the Kingdom? Same way the Pharisees are said to have locked the door. But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
Matthew 23:13.
They shut it up with false claims about Jesus, with customs and doctrines of men. It comes down to words. Pharisees locked or shut up the kingdom by their words

Read Acts 2. You will find Peter stood and raised his voice and by inspiration of the Holy Spirit, preached the gospel for the first time.
Read Acts 10. You will find Peter opening the door to the Gentiles.

Catholics claim that Peter handed the keys to another, to a successor. If they are honest, they would have to admit that there is not verse in the Bible that teaches such a transfer.
My question to Catholics:
Why do you believe the Bible is the Inspired Word of God? What evidence do you rely on for you conviction that the Bible is the Word of God?

The problem of any ceremonial faith, is the form is the faith more than the content.
This is the opposite of the gospel, and a denial of the need for a transformed heart. Most catholics just follow ceremony and life in abject fear, with the favourite saint looking over them like superstition.
This is a poor shadow of the gospel of love and repentance Jesus preached and the emotional freedom Jesus has wrought in my heart today. The church history is almost a history of abject failure with a few heroes, and much biggotry and death, for daring to speak the truth.

It is pure hypocracy to suggest purgatory, indulgences, buying your way into heaven is anything other than heresy.
Now there are people with a good heart in the church, but that is true of any organisation ever invented, it does not make its teaching true or valuable. The core failure of mankind is buying in to a quick fix while denying they are sinners in need of saving.

What for me is also the final nail in the coffin, is for speaking these truths, I am doomed to hell and excommunicated. That is just a joke, preached by blind teachers and those who never found the way to Jesus.

Pope admits the RCC killed millions of Christians in the past

The Roman Catholic Church will officially request forgiveness for
past errors. Vatican theologians are working on a document that
acknowledges the church's sins for past abuses and oversights.
Wrongdoing committed during the Inquisition and the church's
treatment of Jews is expected to be included, Reuters said.
During the Inquisition, many Jews were forcibly converted and
so-called heretics were tortured to repentance. The document is
part of Pope John Paul II's effort to have the world's 1 billion
Catholics repent for the church's past sins as part of its
millennial celebration. An official day called Request for
Forgiveness will be held March 8, 2000.
----------------

Those of you that are truly looking to please God FIRST. SEEKERS!!! This post is for YOU! Do you recall ALL the people from these NG's that proclaimed with GREAT CONFIDENCE that my posts concerning the DOCUMENTED FACT that the Roman Catholic Church TORTURED people years ago to get them to CONVERT to catholicism was FALSE? They said I LIED TO YOU PEOPLE! They said the DOCUMENTED FACTS I shared with you about the church's activity was a LIE! Just ONE case in point, they said that THIS BOOK... http://ccel.wheaton.edu/foxe/martyrs/fox104.htm was nothing but a pack of bogus hatefilled propaganda and lies! They SCREAMED at me that their church NEVER TORTURED ANYONE EVER!!! Priests have said this, Nuns have said this, Bishops have said this, Cardinals have said this!! They all said this to PREVENT you SEEKERS from believing the TRUTH about what the Church of Babylon has done, is doing, and will continue to do. AND NOW we see their LEADER is going to ADMIT TO ALL THE WORLD that the ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH DID IN FACT TORTURE PEOPLE TO GET THEM TO CONVERT TO CATHOLICISM!!!! Would Jesus do this I ask??? Would Jesus strip your flesh form your body while you screamed in agony? Would He boil you in oil while holding a "host" in front of you? Would He cut you in half if you didn't admit the "host" was really HIM incarnate? Would He draw and quarter you for all to see what becomes of those that won't convert? Would He burn you at the stake IN FRONT OF YOUR SPOUSE AND CHILDREN to get you AND THEM to convert? Only Satan and his league of fallen angels can stake this claim. And now the Pope is about to ADMIT the Church has been doing this all along! AFTER HUNDREDS OF YEARS OF DENYING IT in ALL the history books, ALL the newspapers, ALL the media, and from ALL the pulpits! Why do you suppose he is doing this? Email me and request "The Second Window" and I will email it to you for FREE! You will see WHY this Pope is looking for a worldwide "group hug" March 8, 2000. Be prepared though! These FACTS that are NOT for the squeamish!

It's TIME to read it people!

Truth is truth!

We try to welcome everyone to our site including people who grow up with Catholic tradition because of course we want to lead people to the truth.

But sometimes it's perceived that we tolerate error and heresy. Please understand first of all that we don't screen every thread and post in this forum. YOU can help with that. :) If there's something that you really think we should deal with, then use the Report button (there's a Report button on every post). But please understand that there will be some error and we don't remove all error or even all heresy from the site, partly because it's an opportunity for Christians to correct it and respond with the word of God. But if there's too much of it or too much from one person then we do some housecleaning. We certainly don't want our site to be dominated by Catholic heresy or whatever heresy or error, and we don't want people to get the impression that we just tolerate all of that.

So for the record, Catholicism is heresy. That's what the admins of this site believe.

Mary WAS A SINNER.

She needed a savior, just like you and me.

She is NOT the "mother of God". God has no mother, because God is God. Yes Jesus is God, and Mary was his mother, but we have to understand the dual nature of Jesus. He was 100% God yes, and also 100% man. Mary was his mother as a man, not as God. No where does the scripture refer to Mary as the "mother of God". And in fact, she's not even mentioned in all the epistles. All the New Testament instruction to the church is all about Jesus, not Mary. They never said "hail Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners". They always said JESUS .. JESUS... JESUS.

This is preaching to the choir for most people here. But it regularly happens that we start to accumulate Catholics here who really promote and argue their Catholicism, along with all the heresy.

So for the record, if anyone wants or needs to hear it, we don't agree with Catholic heresy. And yes it is heresy to exalt any other human being as sinless to the same level as Jesus (as the Catholics do with Mary -- they actually teach that Mary was sinless like Jesus!!!), and put equal focus on a person other than Jesus.

At the same time, we understand that no one is born a Christian. That's why Jesus said you must be born again. So we welcome all who are seeking -- Catholics, Muslims, homosexuals, and even protestants who are "Christian" only by tradition -- to experience our fellowship here on this site and learn the truth that Jesus is the way and the truth and the life and no one can come to the father except through Him. And there is only one God, and one mediator between God, the man Christ Jesus. Because he was both 100% man and 100% God, that makes him the perfect mediator between man and God. That's why the scripture also tells us to go straight to Jesus -- go to the throne of grace with confidence, knowing that he can understand our weaknesses and everything, since he lived as a man like us (and even experienced all temptation). Hence we don't need Mary to go to or go through -- that defeats the purpose of Jesus.

I saw my mother-in-law die before my eyes putting her faith in Mary. Days before she died I asked her if Mary can save her and she actually said yes. Then in her dying moments, my father-in-law pushed me in front of her to pray for her as she was dying before our eyes. I simply prayed out loud in front of everyone that she would put her faith in Jesus, and ONLY JESUS. There was protesting in the background "wala na Maria? wala na Maria?", which is Filipino language for "No Mary?? No Marry??". You see how deceived they all are. It is sad. You see how the devil uses that poison to add something to Jesus.

So I hope it's clear what we believe and we hope that we can promote the truth here in love.
Apparently it's not, because this thread has become probably the worst at arguing & debating catholicism.

rcc catholicism is supposed to be no where on this site promoted. when it is , it is evil, wicked, and also against the rules. when a roman heretic comes here promoting heresy, it is evil, wicked and also against the rules. they will be confronted every time.

they cannot recognize love, or they would know that the hierarchy they think loves, hates them to death - and destroys more souls than anything on earth.

love is trying to save them. open rebuke is better than hidden love. remember (or did you never read scripture either?)

NO HERESY. BIG LETTERS. NO HERESY.... do not bring HERESY HERE TO PROMOTE IT.

if a catholic has honest questions , that's different. if it's about heresy, it's out of here.
if it's about GOD , JESUS, FAITH AND TRUST
good. learn the truth. renounce the heresy.

I don't agree with you on that. they haven't repented and asked my forgiveness
So what, who are you? They have to ask you? Isn't forgiveness for us as Christians assumed for others no matter what? Of course, we all should repent, but we all know we will fall short.

and they haven't affected me personally.
Wait, wouldn't that make it easier for you to forgive?

its not a question of me forgiving them. Its a matter of my seeing them for what thy are.
Ok, you see them as sinners. So you do have something in common. Good for you V.

they are far from God indeed that they are no better than their predecessors who murdered, raped and persecuted God's people...
The depth of knowledge of someones closeness to God is something you will never know buddy

if the leaders commit gross sin then they are rejected by God.

Furthermore, the depth of forgiveness of God is something you'll never know. Its inconceivable that you think you could even contemplate this.

you have apparently fully trusted the deceivers who were and still are murdering the believers and the Jews and others around the world, who did in the inquisition and in the crusades and in many places all over the world before and after those....

so as long as you walk with them or defend those who murder the believers and the Jews and others who won't bow down to the pope,

you are still going to share the guilt and the punishment and the wrath that yahweh pours out on them.

if you want to be free and clear of their sin, renounce them, get away from them,

and stop participating with them in their sinful abominations and heresy.

who else besides a few here have shown you the way to freedom out of your slavery to the pope and bondage to sin ?

those who remain quiet while you keep on sinning? are they helping you be free from the sin?

[h=2]SLAVES IN CATHOLIC COLONIES[/h]To maintain a balance of power between Portugal and Spain, Pope Alexander VI, in the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas, divided the known New World between the two countries. As there was a need to locate a group to work in areas where the supply of indigenous labor was insufficient, to sustain their colonies, Spain and Portugal imported Africans. Between 1500 and 1850, twelve million Africans arrived in the Americas to toil as slaves. The vast majority of these slaves worked in the Catholic colonies of Spain and Portugal.

The problem of any ceremonial faith, is the form is the faith more than the content..
Not so of the mass, for which the content is and was the most profound exercise of Christianity. Jesus at the last supper said " do this" of the new covenant, so that is what we do - the imagery and context drawn from the marriage supper of the lamb.

But what you say is indeed true of the " rock concert" on Sunday Christianity, which is all form and no content.

. The core failure of mankind is buying in to a quick fix

Like OSAS you mean, the macdonalds fast food , get rich quick scheme doctrine, promoted on every street corner in the US by evangelists, but which ignores the other 99.9 percent of the bible. Like every " get rich quick scheme" , if it sounds to be to good to be true, in that case it is.

Some Pope may oppose slavery, but read this:

    • The Catholic Church
      • As reported by the Evangelist in 2000, official publication of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, "... Pope John Paul II has called on the Church to recognize and apologize for its failures during the first 2000 years of Christianity. Foremost among those failures, according to a panel of scholars, is repression of others in general and anti-Semitism in particular." (49) The scholars were asked: "What is the worst mistake the Church has committed over the past two millennia -- and how can the Church make up for it?" Among the responses was this one regarding slavery: "The Church's silence on or even implicit approval of slavery for almost 2000 years" was its worst mistake, said Rev. Robert Scully, SJ, assistant professor of history at Le Moyne College in Syracuse. "From the New Testament period on, the Church generally accepted slavery as a 'natural' part of socio-economic reality, or spoke of it as a necessary evil," he explained. "As a Jesuit, I am morally embarrassed by the fact that certain Jesuit provinces owned slaves into the 18th and even the 19th centuries. It is a classic -- and particularly chilling -- example of the fact that the Church has often not been at the forefront of moral crusades to end unjust social realities that were too often taken for granted, or not deeply questioned and challenged."
      • As reported in msn Encarta, "In 2000, a Holy Year in which the church reflected on its 2000-year history, John Paul asked forgiveness for sins committed by Roman Catholics. Although he mentioned no specific errors, several cardinals acknowledged past injustice and intolerance toward non-Catholics. These acknowledgements were understood to include the Crusades and the Inquisition and inaction during the Holocaust. The apology preceded a papal pilgrimage to the Holy Land and a visit to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial in Israel." (50)

Jackson, you should spend your time worrying about your own salvation, than this endless rant trying to smear others.

Perhaps you had not noticed, that RCC is in good company, because as far as
I am aware NOT ONCE did Jesus speak out against slavery in a roman world that was built on the labour of slaves.
Yet as a slave to sola scriptura, you had not noticed this?

So perhaps he cared more for their souls than their temporal discomfort on this earth? Who knows?
The slave is unlikely to suffer the problems of wealth, or indeed as in your case the arrogance that presumes to judge others.

So perhaps our Lord saw more important issues.

1, I am concern about my salvation brother. that is why I concern about other salvation as well.

It is lie if one say he is save and not love other and not worry about other salvation.

2. If you said Jesus agree with slavery, why Pope apology about slavery. Is that mean Pope not in agreement with Jesus?

That is not what I said, I said Jesus did not speak out against it,
so why do you criticise others for doing the same?

You - who preaches sola scriptura - so where is your scriptural basis for criticism?

So Who are you to presume to judge the conduct of others?
Here are the rules of Christianity.
Rule 1. Look for the beam in your own eye first Jackson
Rule 2. First learn rule 1.

The reality is, your post was yet another an attempt to attack RCC, with no foundation - in the hope that a smear will stick, and that being so , you are no longer worth responding to..
