Acts 8
15When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit,
16because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.
===============================

Can someone explain why the Holy Spirit had not come on the Samaritans despite being water baptized. In Acts 2:38, isn't the Holy Spirit promised AT WATER BAPTISM? The why did these people in Acts 8 not receive the Holy Spirit?

When you become a Christian the Holy Spirit dwells IN you. You are referring to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The gifts were given to them at the laying of the apostles hands.

The Holy Spirit did not fall on one of them... That means just what it says... They did not have the Holy Spirit YET! You see this is what I mean.... do we now get baptized three times? Once with water, once with the Holy Spirit then with the Holy Spirit and gifts? Come on! It says clearly that the Holy Spirit did not fall on one of them... but when John and Peter.... then Simon wanted to buy that gift of BAPTIZING WITH HOLY SPIRIT... and we know it cannot be bought. Not even Philip could baptize with Holy Spirit!

In this chapter it is clear that Baptism of Holy Spirit is the LAST step to holiness. Rebirth and glorification comes when God baptize with Holy Spirit! At the END of repentance! The End of justification. Just as Col 3 says.... Look at any of the people that received the Holy Spirit, even the Apostles, they had to WAIT till Jesus asked the Father and He Himself was glorified! Then God glorified Jesus in the apostles... John17. Jesus is glorified in ALL people that are baptized with Holy Spirit. And it is not the joke of Benni Hinn and his clowns. It is actually the Godly Holy Spirit of Jesus that comes into a person and glorifies that person for God's GLORY. That comes with a great power and a maifestation of nine gifts. 1 Cor 12. EVERY person filled with the Holy Spirit has at least one of these gifts, for ALL advantage!

My friend these people in Samaria was destined to get the Holy Spirit, that is why God send Peter and John to them to baptze them with the Spirit! Simon missed out it looks lke, because he thought money could buy Godly gifts.

Buddy as i get it in the Bible... The Holy Spirit leads us before He fills us. The Holy Spirit lead them because Philip was filled with the Holy Spirit as a deacon and an evangelist, but not as an Apostle. Apostles baptized with Holy Spirit. I have not seen any other that baptized with the Holy Spirit but apostles appointed by God. Eph 4:11

Elizabeth, Are you saying that they became Christians when they were water baptized? This means that as per Acts 2:38 they had received the Holy Spirit (indwelling) when they were baptized with water. They did not have the gifts of the Holy Spirit as yet. When the apostles came, they imparted the gifts of the Holy Spirit by laying hands on them. Pls correct me if I have misunderstood anything.

@Online Buddy.

first of all...what does the script say?

they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.
It says they had been baptized into the name of Jesus...NOT baptised into WATER.

Check out the original meaning of baptised, It means to be immersed. Immersed into anything.
I can be baptised in fire, baptised in blood, baptised in water, baptised in anyone's name etc

The basic problem why people get things confused and contradicted is that they all believe the word "baptised/baptism" means to be immersed into water. Which is a lie, it is a basic 'word of mouth' passed on from churches to churches.

Jesus gave Peter the keys to the Kingdom, it is through Peter that he can unlock the way to receive the Holy Spirit.
It was basically Peter who could first allow people to receive the Holy Spirit when one prays and repents to Jesus.

How is one baptised into Jesus Christ?
when you pray, repent and confess Romans 10:9.

I STRONGLY advise you to read through this topic and follow how I discovered the true meaning of baptised into Jesus Christ

but you do bring an interesting question as I would look into this further.
Because after the Pentecostal day was when people should be able to receive the holy spirit once baptised in Jesus. And do not need Peter.
Because Paul also baptised 2 people into Jesus Christ, he placed his hand on them and they received the Holy Spirit. In Acts 19

Or...can one ONLY receive the Holy Sprit through the "laying of the hands!?"
because this is actually something Paul pointed out in Hebrews 6 about we should stop talking about laying of the hands.

I will look into this!

Xino,
Thanks for yr reply. I believe the Samaritans were immersed in water. How can one be practically immersed into the name of the Lord? Please explain your understanding.

Can you also please explain immersion in fire and immersion in blood? When did these types of immersions happen in the Bible?

And yes, I will read the link you have provided.

Also please look into the fact (as you said you will) about why Peter and John had to come all the way to Samaria to impart the holy spirit by laying of hands? Thanks.

Matthew 3:13-16
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him; and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.

Ephesians 4:4-5
There is one body, and one Spirit, even as you are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Romans 6:3-5
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his

I Peter 3:21
This is a symbol of baptism, which now saves you also - not the removal of dirt from the body, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, it saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. (How do you removed dirt from the body? Water)

John 3:1-5
Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him." Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, unless one is born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God." Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?" Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

Titus 3:5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewal of the Holy Spirit

Acts 22:16
And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on his name

In acts Chapter 10 the Gentiles received the Holy Spirit without hands being on them. In Chapter 8 The Jews and Samaritans had to come together. I don't know the best way to explain it, but now the holy spirit comes to anyone who accept Jesus as their lord and savior.
The Gentiles Receive the Holy Spirit

44 Even as Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the message. 45 The Jewish believers[e] who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles, too. 46 For they heard them speaking in other tongues[f] and praising God.
Then Peter asked, 47 “Can anyone object to their being baptized, now that they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did?” 48 So he gave orders for them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Afterward Cornelius asked him to stay with them for several days.

The Gentiles recieved the Holy Spirit as evidence that the divide between Jews and Gentiles was gone, and they were accepted in to the church. This was the only reason they were able to speak in tongues.

Peter also ordered them to be baptized afterwards.

you believe they were immersed in water but no evidence.

Please look into this word "Baptised" original word is "Baptizo"
which means to be immersed!
Meaning you can be baptised in anything, because the word baptised DOES NOT MEAN immersed into water.
It means immersed into, and it can be anything.

No baptised into blood and fire isn't in the bible, but it is an example to show you can be baptised into anything.
The word baptised into fire originated during the war, when one is sprinkled with firing bullets.
baptised in blood (reference from 300 movie).

How is one baptised into Jesus Christ?
we all know that when we are baptised, we are buried into death with Jesus.
Now ask yourself this question- did Jesus die in water or on the cross?
Luke 12:50 Jesus said he has a baptism to undergo. Ok how can he have a baptism to undergo when he was baptised in water? the baptism he is talking about is death on the cross, which is why we say "we died unto him"

Tell me...what washes away your sins? water or Jesus blood?

Now the word Baptised means immersed.
when you pray, repent and confess is when you are immersed!
Jesus will do the rest of the work spiritually.
Romans 10:9 is HOW to be immersed into Jesus Christ.

water baptism DOES NOT SAVE!!!
It is a tradition still practised by the Church. Water Baptism is JOHN'S baptism.
Churches ONLY perform water baptism to be denominated into a membership of the church.
John said so that Jesus is coming to baptise with Holy Spirit.

What/who forgives your sins? water or Jesus?

Please read that topic!
there are different versions of Baptisms.

and yes I am looking into that passage, very puzzling! o_O

Elizabeth619 is right in explaining why they don't have holy spirit gift.
The Samaritans has the holy spirit dwelling in them because it WOULD contradict the bible if they didn't have the Holy Spirit. And bible cannot contradict, only humans contradict themselves from lack of understanding the bible.

Holy Spirit does give different gifts.
1 Corinthians 12 talks about spiritual gifts from the Holy Spirit.

Originally we get the holy spirit once we are born again by repenting and confessing Jesus is Lord (which is being baptised spiritually) Romans 10:9.
We'll receive the Holy Spirit because Holy spirit is Jesus or part of Jesus. (Again Jesus is God and Holy Spirit is God, they may be separate but they are one and are God!)

Now the laying of the hand to receive the Holy spirit is to receive A gift from the Holy Spirit.
Receiving the Holy spirit doesn't mean you HAVE to speak in Tongues or you WILL speak in tongues.
Again 1 Corinthians 12 explains all these.

We get the same holy spirit, holy spirit distribute different gifts: wisdom, understanding, understanding tongue language, speaking in tongues, prophecy.
This is to get the gift of the Holy Spirit.
But Samaritans already have the holy spirit in them. Because when you are baptised into Jesus, you become a new creation and your old self is dead!
Jesus himself is THE one who gives you new life, you keeps you alive when you were originally dead to sin.
Like I said before Holy Spirit is Jesus, therefore you having the holy spirit means you have Jesus inside you that is keeping you alive.

A quote I made up.

"Jesus is your generator (life) that gives electricity (light) to your body (temple)."

I can say the same thing about you!
I said you should read that topic but you ignored it

the reason why I don't want to battle you with water baptism/spiritual baptism is because I would start laying out different quotes that proves you wrong. And I don't have time for that as it is also time consuming.
That topic shows my progression how I WAS EXACTLY like you.
Thinking baptism means water, until someone proved me wrong and later I gradually understood the true concept.

That topic is very in-detailed and deep therefore if you want to discuss about water baptism. That topic is ALL I can refer you to.

It is a shocking truth but I am sorry that is the truth.
If you don't care what colour skin Jesus is and truly accept the white man Jesus, then you approve of living in the lies.
Same thing here, you are taught about water baptism and you believe the word baptism means water immersion.

One advise I would give is to get your mind out of the meaning of baptism that means water immersion.
Original word is Baptizo that means immersion.
If you can understand the meaning of baptism, then you can start learning deeper about -baptisms- in the bible.

I would never tell another Christian I don't have time to explain something if I knew in my heart they were wrong. What is more important to you? Proving YOU are "right" or encouraging and edifying others?

If you don't care what colour skin Jesus is and truly accept the white man Jesus, then you approve of living in the lies.
This has nothing to do with the topic of this thread so it may be a good idea to be respectful and not bring up other subject matter from one thread to another., but i will say I never said I believed Jesus was white. What I did say is his skin color is not what saved me. It was his blood.

I get the strong impression that you are only here with your own personal agenda, and not to really discuss the bible, but to accuse others of believing in corrupt ways when it has been made clear to you on many occasions that some things you state may be in error.

I also never said the definition of baptism was water immersion. What I did was post scripture where water baptism was mentioned in the bible. Baptism does mean to immerse. There is also baptism by fire, and the Holy Spirit, but the bible also says there is only ONE baptism.

It also says if you are not born of water and of sprit you cannot enter the kingdom of Heaven.

Also, I will read your thread you posted.. If I am going to carry on this conversation with you I will at least read what you asked me to.

Ok buddy, welcome to CC and welcome to all the different doctrines..... Let me show you something about baptism. The one person I know God sent to baptize with water was John the baptist. He even baptized Jesus, why? Jesus had no sin to be baptised clean for. But to do as God wanted them to do. Jesus said to John that he had to baptize Jeus sos that the prophets could be fulfilled.

And John preached.... I baptize with water but He that comes after me will baptize you with fire and Spirit! And then Elizabeth quoted a verse from Eph 4 where God says.... ONE baptism. Now! I f john talks about two... one with water and the other with fire and spirit! which one do you think Eph 4 talks about? Water of fire and spirit?

If God says in Eph 4 there is only ONE BAPTISM, I have to make a choice to what kind of baptism I am going to strive for. I strive for the baptism of Jesus. Did you know that JEsus NEVER baptised a single person in water? NEVER! Why? Becasue he will soon after His departure give the gift of Holy Spirit to His apotles. And the apostle Paul says clearly he was not sent to baptize ANY person and he only baptized a few. But look at how he spread the Word and how many people received the Holy Spirit through him and his calling as an apostle to the gentiles. Look how eveident the Holy Spirit was in Paul and his works.

Let me ask you this. what will wash sin away? The water, or the faith in Jesus? After Jesus ascended, who needs water to be cleaned? Is it not the faith in the blood of the Lamn that emoves sin from us? And did JEsus not say if we thirst and get water from Him we will NEVER thirst again? That water is not H2O... water as we know it... It is the water of the WORD... Jesus said that living waters will flow from us... WORD! His Word. And that can only happen if the Holy Spirit speaks through us... He knows the Word like nobody else!

The Bible says this... That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, Eph 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
In afrikaans it says that we will be washed by a waterbath through the Word of God. Directly translated. It looks like there is a Holy Spirit Message like water that cleanse us from all dirt, bodily and spiritually. It is much more powerful than John's baptism, because it s the Holy Jesus baptizing today, still.

Look at teh example of the gentiles that received the Holy Spirit when PEter preached to them. They were made holy by receiving the Holy Spirit, yet the Jews still wanted to baptize them, and give them the law to uphold. Later Peter and Paul would have a big word-battle about this. Then the Jews decided to adhere to God's will, and let Paul be the only Apostle for the gentiles. Exactly what God wanted nd said to Ananias.

I hope you will one day do your own study on baptism, and then you will see there is only ONE baptism... the ONE Jesus still des today! This baptism can only be done by Jesus. It was not John and Peter that baptized the people, it was Jesus in John and Peter that did. Jesus can still baptize ANY person He wants too today. And he still does, otherwise there will be no holy man on earth. The only PErson that can make holy is the Holy Spirit! Nothing else can!
