I Jn 2:15-16:
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world
These can take many forms. For example, the lust of the flesh is not limited to fornication only, but anything that the flesh desires, that violates God's will. These passages show everything the world has to offer. Satan is said to attack us with fiery darts Eph 6:16.

All around us is sin. Satan uses "the lust of the flesh and eyes, and the pride of life" to make us fall.

It is interesting, in looking in different accounts of Satan attacking, you find all three, the lust of the flesh the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, either being used by Satan, or the one who falls into sin:

First: In the Garden:
Notice after Satan lied to her, and twisted God's words (ye shall not die), Eve's carnal lusts kicked in:
Gen 3:6
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, <---the lust of the flesh

and that it was pleasant to the eyes, <----the lust of the eyes

and a tree to be desired to make one wise,
<----the pride of life

she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat <---those 3 present, she sinned:

Next: David a man after God's own heart:

2Sa 11:2 And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. <----the lust of the eyes (and flesh Im sure)

2Sa 11:3 And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
2Sa 11:4 And David sent messengers, and took her;
<---The pride of life, king takes a mans wife, thinks he is above God's laws, and man's morale.

2Sa 11:4 And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house. <---the lust of the flesh, violated the will of God, to satisfy the flesh

Finally: The Lord:
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. (<---Satan tried to take advantage of his fleshy hunger)_
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread
(<---this is two fold, the lust of the flesh, being hungry and violating God's will, by PROVING his deity to Satan, he would show his distrust to God, and depend on physical food

This time the lust of the flesh did not work.
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God - Due 8:3

Then:
Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me<----showed him what he could have...The lust of the eyes

The lust of the eyes did not work on the son of God:
Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve - Due 6:13

Finally:
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. <-----The Pride of life. Satan wanted Jesus to tempt God, to show off he was the Son of God.

This time the Pride of life temptation failed:
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God - Due 6:16

This is how we are attacked today as well, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. All sin fits into one of those categories. This is Satan's arsenal.

Heb 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we
are (lust of the flesh, eyes, pride of life), yet without sin

Jesus left us an example, he was tempted with the same thing we are, but he beat Satan with only using OT passages. Imagine what we can do with the entire Bible.

Good posting . :)
These scripture speak to why the love we know of the world, must e set aside.
Why we need to look in Jesus to God Our Father's love, which is perfect!
Too often, many will argue that love is the reason why we should accept a wrong, why we must reject a teaching of scripture.
Saying if God is love, then this we should do, as it is loving to do this.
When this love spoken to is the world's love, it will condemn and fail.
God's love calls us through word to what is just and good, diserned in Jesus's name.
May we all in Jesus know this perfect love, so we all may disern that which is worldly, and that which is spiritual, God's perfect love in Jesus!

God bless

Shalom feedm3...this morning I was reading the verses to overcome, perhaps this is what our Saviour meant when He told us to overcome. We must overcome the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life.

Thanks for your post, good to remember and be on guard today:)
