What is sin?

(I wonder if anyone will get all Bill Clinton on us and say that it depends on what the definition of "is" is.)

Sin means "to miss the mark". As in when we "sin" we miss the mark of what we should do, which is God's will.

The fruits of the spirit are things we should exhibit by obeying God's word. These things are on point.

The fruits of the flesh are the things that the human body normally wants to do of it's own will; which, coincidentally enough, misses the mark( by a long shot) of God's will.

Does that help?

BTW the picture is adorable. Also the word "is" means " to be" lol( depending on how you use it)

Sin is disobeying God in thought, word, or deed, by what we have done, or left undone.

Sin is when we fail to be who God wants us to be, through our actions, thoughts, words. It is when we do what is offensive to God, or purposely fail to do what is pleasing to him.

So those who ignorantly fail to please God will be justified? Ignorance is no excuse for sin.
i think that was the implication of the "or" part. We ignorantly do that, or we do it on purpose.

Cool.

So we have missing the mark and not doing His Will, transgression against the law, willful and un-willful disobedience, a falling short of what it means to be human, not doing what we know (awareness) we ought to do, and it is whatever God says it is.

The missing the mark and falling short of what God truly purposed humans to be are explanations that I more fully understand; that the purpose of humanity is to be in communion with God and falling short of that purpose is a result of the fall. In other words, the mark or target is communion with God and anything less is to be less than human because it goes against our purpose.

But there's a verse that's kind of haunted me and I can't yet tell if it's haunted me in a good way or bad way.

Being Orthodox, I see consumption of anything, television, conversation etc. not unlike food so the following verse is, if I'm not over-reacting, pretty whoa...

Romans 14:23 (King James Version)

23And he that doubteth is ****ed if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

Even the end of that verse goes beyond food in a literal sense. I know that this verse doesn't mean that if we have faith then we can sin; that sin ceases to be a sin if done out of faith, but the verse strikes me humble.

I mean, if every thought, action, word etc. (they're all actions really) are not of faith, then you can sin up a storm. I mean, I could read the bible, quote it, deliver the good news, think about God but if I do all these things and do them without faith?????

Sin!!!!!!

Now, I don't know about you guys but I live in a pretty modern world. A place where what God purposed as natural seems to be unnatural and the unnatural seems natural. Is everything I do, of faith? No! When I'm pumping gas and sighing at the little numbers zipping past faster than the gas is coming out of the nozzle, are my actions of faith? No! He is risen! When I roll my eyes at that dood at the Quickie-Mart who doesn't speak English because he brings me a half-pint of skim Milk, a box of Ho-Ho's and some pokemon playing cards when all I asked him for was today's paper, are my actions in that moment, of faith???? No! He is risen!

So I guess here is the follow up question... How can we sin less? Should we even put our focus on not sinning? Should we instead just direct all our actions toward Him and as a happy side-effect, enjoy sinning less? Or should we just live a life of avoiding a list of do-nots? Is seeking out the do-nots less practical than seeking out the dos?

Lord have mercy.....

In my walk with Our Lord Jesus, I came to realize that no matter how hard I tried or worked or lived in his word . I saw that when I looked at my own heart I could still see a motive of sin there. I prayed about it and asked Our Lord what can I do? Even when I try I still can see sin. Then Jesus revieled that this is where his grace is glorified. I am a sinner, simply by living in the world, but he showed me that when I rest in his grace through faith, that in our weakness that he is glorified. By this we are saved and all we do made good. This does not mean you can do as you please. But that Our Lord Jesus can make that which we cannot do, all possible in him. I am so gratful for this, because I can go forward in confidence that my unseen sin in the heart is transformed through grace to glorify God. God bless, pickles

Erm, you may not have understood what I meant.

We can classify sin this way: Sins of commission, and sins of omission.

1. Sins of commission are sins that we commit by choosing to do something wrong. For instance, I know it is wrong to steal, and I choose to steal, so I have sinned by committing a sinful act.

2. Sins of omission are sins that occur when we fail to do something we should do. For instance, I know it is good to help people, but when I see a woman get mugged I fail to help her after the suspect has fled the scene and she is lying on the ground unconcious. Here, I haven't done anything sinful by choosing to do an evil thing (like, rob someone), but I have chosen not to do good (helping a victim) instead, which is still sinful.

These are both plain sin, I was just pointing out the ways we can sin, that it is not always a manner of doing bad things, but can be a failure to do good things too.

Sin is not showing love to everyone. not putting God first. Hate, unforgiveness, bitterness, envey, pride, lust, gossip, being lazy, gluttony, having your mind full of bad thoughts, cussing, not paying your tithes, watching nasty movies, listening to evil music, not going to church, not reading your bible, not praying for others, there are many , many sins. Whats important is to say your sorry when you sin and don't do it any more. No matter how hard we try we will still sin. But we are to do our best to not sin. And we can bring it down to almost never sinning and thats how God wants us. God bless you, Love

Sin is not believing in Jesus, (Trusting in,relying on, or clinging too) and also,

Not loving God with all your heart and not loving your neighbor as yourself!

Sin is not being led by Love.

It is written that pride is the source of all sin. Also take a look at Isaiah 59 (the whole chapter) points out a few things there. Not saying it is all laid out there but it is a reference if you take a look.

The main thing is to not focus on sin, but focus on god and his son jesus christ. The good news is this. There is an acutual place called hell and guess what, you don't have to go there. If jesus christ is your savior and you have accepted him into your life then the whole sin thing will take care of itself because you will feel sin when it occurs.
I know i am not alone in this as other christians surely know what it is that i am saying. When a person with god in their lives commit a sin it weighs upon you immediately and you know at that moment what you did, or said was wrong.

always keep in mind as well that god does not hate the sinner but hates the sin.

Sin is anything that hurts God. Jesus gave us the formula to avoid this; to Love God and to Love your neighbor as yourself. In this is contained all the law and prophets.

James 4:17

Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.
