So this is a scary thought and all the hype about it doesn't make it any better, but what do you guys think about the prediction that the world will end in 2012? Can anyone give me a background on this? I know it's the end of the mayan calendar, but apparently there are other sources (even biblical) that predict this date. I don't know how true this is and I can't say that I believe it considering the bible reads in Matthew 24:36 "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only", but do any of you believe there is any way it could be true?

every hundred years or so, a scare starts circulating among people, especially christians, about how the end of the world is coming soon. the given dates come and go. it has always been that way, always contributed to by popular fears of the time. 2012 will come and go, the same as all the other years that have been predicted as the end of the world. dont worry about it.

I don't mean to be rude here but if you are a Christain , scary is probably not the right Word to use, excitement might come to ones mind, this is a day that Christians should be looking forward to.

Lu 21:27And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.Lu 21:28And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

you quoted what scripture tells us perfectly and in your quote is the answer to your question.

As far as fearing anything that comes at us, we are told over and over in scriptrure. Fear not. I have heard it put like this before and i know it certainly rings true for me. If a person could know the day and hour that you are going to die will you approach that day with fear or with joy?
I say joy because death itself is not a long process in the grand scheme of things, in fact in most cases it is very fast. Then the greatest day of any christians life..meeting our savior jesus christ face to face. I can't think of anything better than that really.

Even if death comes slowly we will still know what awaits us in the end of our suffering. Remember that jesus suffered before any of us and that through his suffering and sacrifice we are able to enter into the kingdom of heaven.
So to answer the 2012 thing, don't know. Could die tomorrow in a car crash for all i know but as long as jesus christ is in my life and i have served him as a faithful christian then i don't care when it happens, and it will happen for all of us at some point. Just be sure to live in the word of god and have jesus christ in your life because noone knows when they will be called.

This seems to be a pop-culture phenomena, does not have any scientific or astronomical basis, the idea has been around for a couple of decades trying to link up various post modern new age beliefs with indigenous traditions. Doomsday prophecy books and associated media always sell fairly well and we now can see the like of Hollywood cashing in. It's a shame because the Meso-American Calander is actually a very good way of time keeping and it was known long before the Mayans adopted it, it is what is called a 'Long Count' calander. Mayan Calander scholars are divided on start and end dates for processional cycles, most disagree with a 12/12/2012 end date, it just seems to have a nice ring about it, as far as I can tell there is nothing special about the date, it's not a galatic allignment date.

It is my opinion that something will happen before 2012 that will make people forget all about 2012, there are much more pressing and significant realities that will manifest before this date.

as usual, lots of things will happen that seem to support some old prophesy, on or around 2012. that has always been said, right before some predicted date of disaster. give them no credence.

Oh just the basic neccessities for living, it will become increasingly harder to achieve decent levels of living standards, our entire world system in utterly bankrupt, both financially and morally and spiritually, the coming economic depression of which we are just entering into will be long and brutal, it will make the 1930's seem like a summer picnic for girl scouts.

Christians had no problem about world ending 2012 or any other date. Even the end of my stay in this world is much joy and not a problem to worry about. Jesus said, "those who hear and obey His word wil passed from death unto life. So why worry?

what's the difference? the world is going to end for sure we just don't know when. What Christians need to worry about is how they will win more souls b4 the world comes to an end. Yes, Excitement is the term! but woe for those who do not use their talents and bury them on the ground. Jesus warns us that these kind of Christians will be thrown down to a place where there is grinding and gnashing of teeth.

Here's my outlook on the end of it all...

Well, the world could end tomorrow. It could end next year. It could end in 2012. It might end in 2546 for all I know. Jesus might come back in 5 minutes from my posting this or 500 years after. Whenever it does happen, it will be the end of the world for all creation.

But, perhaps Jesus will come for me, or more accurately, I will die and my life on earth end, at any of those times as well before the "official" end of the world. If Jesus is coming in 2012, who's to day I won't die before that? Should I wait to amend my life until 2011? No. I need to start now. I need to start now, and I need to live like I could die at any moment until either my own natural (or not so natural) death occurs or the Second Coming. Conversion of life starts today, this minute, this second. I have to renew it ever moment of every day and make it more than a one time event of my life: my life must be the event...my life must be a continuity of personal, inner conversion until the end of my world.

Besides...all I know about 2012 is that I will be paying off college debt. It would be mighty convenient for the Second Coming to occur right before I have to shell out $30,000+ :D

The return of Christ is not the end of all creation. You have the Millennium, and then an eternity in New Jerusalem.

I do not believe the world will end in the year 2012. A massive commit or asteroid is not going to hit this planet on that date I dont even believe Jesus will come come at that time or before that date. Jesus will come but I belive not in our life time.

Sir Isaac Newton said something like it was impossible that Armageddon could occur before 2060.

There is a comet that will bullet burn or??? the earth in I believe in 2029 and swing around the sun to return exactly seven years later. Dont quote me on 2029 as I cant recall if it was then or 2027 or 28. The comet is a fact and you should be able to find it somewhere on line. I thought that the fact that it returns 7 yrs later rather interesting. God bless, pickles
