Is Hell a place of darkness or a place of fire? Is one or both symbolic or figurative? Or are they actual and real? What are your thoughts on this?

Where God is not, there is the opposite.

God is Light. Therefore, Hades is darkness.

God is angered at the wickedness of the wicked. God's anger is like a burning flame. God's anger even reaches down to the floor of Hades.

What torment it is whose abode is full of God's anger.

God is Love. Therefore, Hades is hate.

God is Peace. Therefore, Hades has no rest.

The absence of God, what torment my soul must endure.

Whatever isn't of God isn't opposite, it's the absence of. Eg. Darkness isn't anything in and of itself but it's the absence of light. Evil isn't anything in and of itself but it's the absence of God's goodness.

How is this possible if God is everywhere, all the time?
Is God in outer darkness? Death is separation from God. Second death is the eternal separation from God. If one desires that separation, God will see to it, seeing that God desires a willful relationship.

Hopesprings,

Something to ponder:

If my eyes are upon the darkness, why then must I turn towards the Light, if God can be found in the darkness?

There are 3 entrances to heaven and hell on earth. The Bermuda triangle, the devils triangle and the third is in the north atlantic off the coast of Norway. Each serves 2 continents, excluding antartica. Hell is a whirpool at its entrance and a black hole (bottomless pit) It is cold and dark so there is no fire, the fire will be on earth.

Fire is a symbol of holiness ie the burning bush, God is energy and our son is the source of energy for the universe.(ball of fire)Energy is powerful, ubiquitous, and eternal-it cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change form

How do you know that?
I don't mean that in an accusational way, just curious.

Susan, wow. Makes for great fiction but I have to say your beliefs are rather strange and not supported by God's Word.

This is actually a deep theological discussion among theologians. I personally do not know if the darkness or the fire are literal or simply the only thing know of by man of which the Lord could compare the experience of hell. I am however drawn t the account of the rich man and Lazarus. Luke 16:24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’

It would seem that the fire at least is real from the rich man's testimony. Now I know some believe this account to be a parable. It may very well be, however, it is written much different than every other parable which leaves me to believe that Jesus is relating an account He witnessed.

Let's say for the sake of argument, that the fire is only an analogy. This should bring absolutely no comfort. If the idea of being burned with fire, of never getting relief, of being in extreme physical and spiritual pain to the extent that the only thing on this earth that we could get a mental picture of is being burned alive of all time, then Hell is likely much worse.

Now we know from God's Word that He is everywhere or omnipresent. This means God is indeed present in Hell. I would like to direct you to heaven for a moment. When we pass from the life in the flesh to eternal life in Heaven we will hear the words from the Lord, well done good and faithful servant, enter into your master's joy. Heaven then is to be surrounded in the Joy of the Lord. Hate however, is not the opposite of joy. Wrath is the opposite. So when a person reject's the gift of Jesus they enter into their master's wrath.

As we are created in the image of god we are designed to live in light and joy not in darkness and wrath. To be in an environment counter to your design is to be in ever growing agony. For this reason the Great Commission should drive us to go and evangelize any and everyone regardless of the risk to ourselves. Even if the ultimate price is asked of us we will enter into our master's joy. Jesus Himself will wipe every tear from our eyes and I believe those tears will be for every person we did not share the truth of Christ with. For every opportunity we wasted when we should have been witnessing.

In Christ,

Bishop SEH

I agree; death = separation from God. In Luke 9:60, Jesus says "leave the dead to bury the dead". These 'dead' people were separated from God in regard to a relationship with Him. God was still in in their presence (not only in the 'form' of Jesus, but also because God is everywhere present, Ps. 139:8). I also agree that the second death is an eternal separation from God. But this does not demand that God is not present (in some form) in the place of outer darkness. It is an interesting thing to ponder....:)

He will not hear their cries because He chooses not to hear them, not because He is unable to hear them. ;)

An interesting point, cee....God is light. That is why we must turn towards the light to find Him. But, again, that doesn't demand that He does not exist in the darkness.

God is not energy...energy is impersonal and God is a Personal Being. Sounds New Age-y to me.

Susan, that is not biblically-sound. God is not a force and energy must be created.

I don't know what to say. other then, don't take any response you see here as fact and run with it. Just make sure and read the Bible when you have time. You'll have to, with enough study form sound conclusion, if not right, almost right. And we keep up study until we get it right. an that may take a while.
