In the bible as we know that we are to be baptised to be saved. yet at the cross/stake were Jesus and the thief were, The thief was not baptised yet Jesus said to him today he will be in paradise. So did Jesus let one slip sort to say? Please before you answer this question? I mean this question not to stir Doubt, or to stir up fall outs and cause many to argue. As we have seen in previous chat rooms. This is a question that recently came to my head, and I would apprieciate anyone who can elaborate on the question. Thank you! God Bless.

Jesus told Zaccheus salvation had come to his house without water Baptism, a change of heart seemed to be enough for Christ to say that.
The theif on the cross seemed to have a change of heart too, and that again seemd the deciding factor to Christ

In Mark 16:16 it says clearly. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. the thief only said he believed, yet not baptised and yet Jesus let him thru sort of say.

Baptism is not a requirement. Baptism itself does not save. It is belief on Jesus. I say belief "on" because anyone can believe in Jesus...even satan and his angels "believe" in Jesus. But they do not believe "on" Him as Savior. Baptism should be a result OF salvation. It is more of a public testimony of the commitment we have made to Jesus.

If anyone else can add to this please do so.

The thief was safe in Christ because he recognised who Jesus was. Simple. 'Unless you be Born Again'.....not 'unless you be baptised'. The thief on the cross recognised and acknowledged Jesus for who He was. King Of Kings. He was then saved, because unless you believe in the son, you won't be. Some of us will be saved, redeemed and forgiven for years, others we are told, will get through 'the door' as if leaving a burning building, naked. God Bless you too :) <><

Richie,

I don't want you to think I am down playing baptism. I think it is important as a follower to do this as I believe it is a commandment...but, not for salvation. I committed myself to Jesus in 2010. About 27 before that I went to a house church and said the "sinners prayer" and was baptized. In 2010 I realized that I had never meant it with my heart the first time...not the prayer or the baptism. I know I didn't because I was no different. Most of this is under my profile...my testimony. After I fully submitted I knew that I needed to be baptized again. Not for salvation mind you. I told my pastor that I wanted to do it as an act of obedience to Jesus.

When we believe in Christ we are baptized into his death and this baptism takes place both physically and spiritually but first spiritually. Cf. Romans 6:1-4 Baptism means to be submerged into and we do just that we choose to believe in Christ. The thief was baptized into Christ when He acknowledge His need for Christ to remember Him.

First of all, their people who believe in Jesus Christ but have never been baptized with water, to symbolize your commitment to him to the entire world. There are people who come to Christ and yet have never been baptized with water. Does that mean they are not saved? No, only
through Jesus Christ and believing in His name and accepting what He did for you, on the cross can one be saved. So, water baptism is not something needed to be saved, but does help understand what we do when we come to Christ. When I came to Christ in 2002, I was never baptized with water. Did that mean I was not saved? No, it means I never went through that. As for God letting something slip, this is Jesus we are talking about and he is God and God will not let anything slip. He knew that the heart of the thief on the cross was genuine, hungered for him, and realized that he was God and only through Him could he be saved. Think about some Christians who come to faith in persecuted countries like the Middle East or other places, many come to Christ even though they could be killed. Some before they can be baptized are slaughtered like animals by those who hate God and reject Jesus. Does it mean those Christians were not saved? No, it means they did not have time to be baptized with water. They already were baptized with the Holy Spirit but not with water. God bless and I hope that helps. Those are my two cents.

The truth is we know little of the thief. What we do know is that he knew who Jesus was, so this tells me that the thief had knowledge of Jesus before the cross. We also know that people were crucified wrongly back then. I mean Jesus was innocent, and he died right beside the thief so is it possible to say that the thief was a follower and just fell short and was paying the price for the crime? Also, we do not know if the thief was baptized or not because the scriptures do not say.

Also, keep in mind that baptism is "dying" from sin, and rising free from sin. One couldn't really be buried with Christ if he hadn't died yet. This is the baptism that Christians have today.

What the thief could have had was John's baptism. His baptism was unto repentance, but John did say one was coming who was mightier than he that would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire.

I have always wondered if baptism isn't a requirement then why do the scriptures even mention it, and why are we told to be baptized for the remission of sins?

The Baptism of water symbolizes being cleansed by the Word. In other words, it is the Word of God that cleanses us from all sin. Jesus Christ is the Word of God and once we believe we are baptized into his death and raise a new creation in spirit. Baptism of the spirit is by the Holy Spirit. Baptism of the water is through the Word and also a literal baptism in water. Cf. Ephesians 5:26 The thief was baptized into Christ who is the Word of God and was cleansed from all sin.

Baptisim has nothing to do with being saved. You are saved through Jesus and baptised as a acknowledgement of the commitment you made to Him. Jesus was baptised, so we are after His example.

I don't think he was baptized . It does not stipulate . All we know is Christ saves, and it was on Christ word that He said, today your going to be with Me in paradise. So I have to take it just like Christ says it there.

I ask a simple question - in the New Testament of those that either knew or met Jesus or were after that time told of Him, how many were baptised?
Answer: ALL of them.

Of those that met Jesus who clearly could not be baptised as they were nailed to a cross at the time, or have subsequently meant in their heart to baptise themselves? the thief. And perhaps many others who could not be baptised because of circumstance. Some people can not be dunked in water.

Does the bible say to be saved "you must believe and be baptised" ?
So if you can be and don't then you have not "died in Christ" as Paul describes it - the water illustrates the grave of the old man.

Those who can't but want to be are considered to be (imagine a convert who cannot be immersed for medical reasons).
Those that consider a flicking of water on the head or are not old enough "to believe" - I think not.
One is no commitment to the death of Christ and the children thing is just meaningless nonsense.

nice... but it does not negate the ORDINANCE of obedience to be immersed in water... it is a spiritual SIGN or testimony. While baptism does not save... ignoring the ordinance is disobedience to the most elementary "work" as a believer.

Never said it negates the ordinance I was pointing out how everybody who is in Christ is baptized into Christ including the thief on the cross and everyone else who had died accepting Christ but was not immerse in water.
