Job 8:8 For enquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and prepare thyself to the search of their fathers:

If we do as Job8:8 instructs we will find that many from the former ages believed that a prophetic day is a year. Consider the following quotes;

Jamison, Faucett & Brown commentary - "..... in the wilderness 'a thousand two hundred and threescore days.' In the wider sense, we may either adopt the year-day theory of 1260 years..."

Sir Isaac Newton 1727 "She is nourished by the merchants of the earth, three times or years and an half, or 42 months, or 1260 days: and in these Prophecies days are put for years."

Thieleman J. van Braght “Whether we begin to reckon these years from the death of the apostles; or with the year 300, when the socalled patriarchs had their origin; or with the year 600; or a little later, when Mohammed rose in the east among the Greeks, and
the pope in the west among the Latins, and raised no small persecution against the defenseless and innocent little flock of the church of Christ, so that all who did not wish to be devoured, either in soul or in body, had to hide themselves in deserts and wildernesses; let it be reckoned as it may, say we, a very long period is to be understood by it, which has extended to this, or about this time . . .”

Matthew Henry 1662 – 1714 “….if the beginning of that interval could be ascertained, this number of prophetic days, taking a day for a year, would give us a prospect when the end shall be.”

Adam Clarke “Perhaps Mohammedanism may be the abomination; which sprang up a.d. 612. If we reckon one thousand two hundred and ninety years, Dan_11:11, from that time, it will bring us down to a.d. 1902,”

John Gill “…since these witnesses were to prophesy 1260 days, that is, so many years…”

John Napier--(1550-1617) Scottish mathematician and devoted Protestant writes in his "Plain Discovery of the Whole Revelation of Saint John" in his Scottish script: "....signifie the Church of Christ fled into the wildernes...everie one of them 1260 iuliane yeares"

In addition to those quoted above, those listed below also believed a day is a year in the language of prophecy.
Jonathan Edwards, John Calvin, E. B. Elliot, Charles Finney, Joachim of Floris 1202, John Foxe, Johan Funck 1558, H. Grattan Guinness, Appolos Hale 1840, Abraham bar Hiyya, 1136, King James 1 1609, Solomon bar Jeroham, c. 950, John Knox, Josiah Litch 1809 – 1886, Martin Luther 1522, Phillip Melanchthon 1543, William Miller 1789 – 1849, Benjamin Nahawendi, c. 850, John Wesley, George Whitefield, John Wycliffe c.1379, Ulrich Zwingli, Arnold of Villanova c 1292, Nicholas of Cusa, c 1452

William H. Shea of the General Conference Biblical Research Institute said “At this time in our church history when our attention has been called to some of the doctrines of the Reformers, such as justification and righteousness by faith, we would do well to heed their principles of prophetic interpretation also."

There is both historical precedent and Scriptural support to use the day is a year principle when interpreting prophecy. Just because the modern commentators from the last 150 or so years have been duped into following the likes of Ribera and Alcasar, the Jesuit priests who started the futurists and preterist movements to counter the effects of reformation does not mean we should make the same mistake and march lock step into the doctrinal camps of the futurists or partial preterism.

While many of those from the former ages understood sound hermeneutic principles they were handicapped by their position on the historical timeline. I suspect that many of those from the former ages if alive today would look back at Israel coming out of the wilderness after 1260 days in 1948 and the Jews regaining control of Jerusalem in 1967 ending the 42 month time of the Gentiles would easily put the timeline together in a manner that clearly demonstrates the prophecies written many years before there fulfillment have been fulfilled and we are now in the season when the Lord will return!

To see a working application of this demonstrating clearly, biblically, and historically that the vast majority of prophecy has been fulfilled and we are now in the season when the Lord returns please see Mathematical Precision of Prophecy < click or download Therapons study guide at this LINK <click

Bildad one of Job's false friends is giving bad advice in Job 8 so I'd be wary basing any doctrine on his words.

Thank you doulos for this link to Therapon's study guide. Maybe this will clear up some mud slinging by certain individuals on this site.
