Seems like there are a few different beliefs as to the age of the Earth,
What are your beliefs and why?

I believe that God could perfectly well have used along tme creating the earth, and though I don't believe in evolution, I do believe that the earth is older than the typical creationist view. Perhaps somewhere in between the two extreemes?

I know perfectly well God could make EVERYTHING (universe, earth, night, day, animals, us) in a split second if He wanted to, I just don't think He did. - Maybe He wants us to have something to figure out?

I'm pretty much on the same page.

2 Peter 3:8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a
thousand years as one day.

In Genisis it talks about days when God created the earth, but God doesn't exist in days, He exists in eternity, essentially the absense of time. God days do not = human days

Stephanie the question really is how old the Earth is and not how long did it take God to create it, but since you mentioned that human days are not God days, then explain the bold type phrases below...

Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Gen 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
Gen 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
Gen 1:4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
Gen 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Gen 1:6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
Gen 1:7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
Gen 1:8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
Gen 1:9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
Gen 1:10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
Gen 1:11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
Gen 1:12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
Gen 1:13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
Gen 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
Gen 1:15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
Gen 1:16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
Gen 1:17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
Gen 1:18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
Gen 1:19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
Gen 1:20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
Gen 1:21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
Gen 1:22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
Gen 1:23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
Gen 1:24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
Gen 1:25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Gen 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
Gen 1:29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
Gen 1:30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
Gen 1:31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
Gen 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
Gen 2:2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
Gen 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

I believe the Bible tells us that God is responsible for creation, and that tells us that creation is the work of God and is of God. The Creation story tells us that important fact. I don't think the Bible is supposed to relay how the earth was made so much as why it was made.

I think science does a good job of telling us how. Because of that, I believe the earth is 4 billion+ years old. Because of my faith, I believe it was the will of God that made it so. The age of the earth, proven through scientific data or Biblical research, is not really important. The fact that God is the origin of all things is.

If I take the 7 day creation literalistically, then I also have to look at this verse:
Gen 2:2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made, and wonder why an all-powerful God had to rest. Was he tired?

Science and Religion; Faith and Reason, don't have to be enemies. Reason keeps faith from becoming superstition, and faith keeps reason from being Godless.

Stephanie wrote in part:
God days do not = human days
Nice try, no evidence. God communicates to humans in human terms. Day means day esp. as noted above when they are number and described by evening and morning.

The quote from Peter actually proves the evolutionary uniformitarian position is wrong. What appears to them to have needed 1000 years (or a million +) could be done by God in a day.... which He did.

Genesis contains genealogies of multiple generations.

But more importantly we have life span from birth to next generation followed by the sum total of each. Add these together and you can put together the existence of life on the earth. And it is apparently a very short span from creation to the fall of Adam.

I think some things are not important and don't need to be explained. What do we gain from knowing how old the Earth is? Nothing...but the animosity and bickering it causes between people leads us to lose much.

This post was not intended to cause bickering, as in all threads on this forum or any forum for that matter there are always the negative posts. What may seem unimportant or of no interest to you Harley does not mean that everyone else must think the same way, besides, if this is of no interest to you then in all honesty why even throw your 2c in...just walk away!:)

Jesus told Nicodemus that if he told him earthly things and he did not believe, then how would he believe if he told him heavenly things.

If the Bible is not telling the truth of origins of the earth and universe, then how do we know about the story of sin and redemption or if it is true.

I think 50,000 to 100,000 years.
You have the nerve to talk about people that go against traditional teachings, and then you claim that the earth is 50,000 - 100,000 years? What a hypocrite.

The earth is almost 6,000 years. The is going to return on the start of the 7th day, which will be when the earth turn 6,000 years old, and then He will reign for the sabbath day of rest or the Millennium.

The age of the earth is not a fundamental doctrine, heretic.

By the way the 6000 year old view is out-dated based on scripture and science.
Even young earth creationists put the figure more at 10,000 to 12,000 years old because they realise there are gaps in the bible's genealogies records in Genesis. I say 50,000 to 100,000 because it's young enough to keep Christians happy and old enough to keep scientists happy , at least in part.

Untrue scripture does not outdate the 6,000 years earth, and it was what the church has always believed. Isn't that your standard of truth?

I'm not sure how expressing my view on the age of the earth (which is not even an important church "doctrine" as such) makes me a hypocrite.
You're still a bit sore that you are a heretic aren't you, well don't worry, you have many like-minded believers in the Jehovah's Witnesses, fine people who love God and His Word too, but who unfortunately can't be reckoned to be "true Christians" due to their rejection of the Trinity and a few other important doctrines. I hope you get over the attitude issues you and your beloved "remnant" have with the majority of Christianity because you're spiritual pride won't get you anywhere except to be a grumpy old man.
