What beautiful words in this psalm, I took one verse at a time reading each one slowly. Reflecting on each verse and the beautiful words and what they mean.

Psalm 23
23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
[SUP]2 [/SUP]He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
[SUP]3 [/SUP]He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
[SUP]4 [/SUP]Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
[SUP]5 [/SUP]Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
[SUP]6 [/SUP]Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

That's probably my favorite bible passage and the first one I memorized. I think I was 9yrs old.

I think it is kind of an overview of the whole bible. The basis for our faith.

I love this Psalm also and I can picture the life of David as a little shepherd boy and then all grown up still trusting in God.
I love to go over each verse and reflect on its meaning also....nice post

God bless and thanks Von!

I try and say this psalm meditatively every day. God always shows me something amazing! Some days, I don't make it through the whole psalm. I might just stop by the still waters, and reflect on all that God has done, is doing and is going to do.

Other days, I think about the valley of the shadow of death. And this has helped me to realize, like Paul, that death has no sting and is swallowed up in victory.

I love all the psalms and try and read at least one a day. But there is no doubt, this one is unique and special. I know when I was in an unbelieving state in my 20's and ended up in some trouble (not with the law!) I remembered this psalm from my childhood memory verses in Sunday School, and it gave me great comfort.

Thanks for posting!

Near the close of the nineteenth century, Isabel Crawford went to the Kiowa-Comanche Reservation in Oklahoma and founded the Saddle Mountain Baptist Mission. This book, written in journal form, begins with her arrival at the reservation in 1896 and describes her decade-long crusade to convert the Indians to Christianity. She and her assistant were the only white women at the isolated station in the Wichita Mountains.

Crawford's experience there tested her resourcefulness, endurance, and sometimes her faith. Humor marks her journal as she recounts her struggles to establish a formal mission. She lived with the Indians, at first putting up in a tipi and adjusting, not without difficulty, to their ways. She was “the Jesus woman” who taught the Ten Commandments. In her wake came camp meetings, baptisms, and “big eats.” Through the years Isabel Crawford and her Indian brothers and sisters were bound more closely as they raised money to build a church. Though written with Christian purpose, Kiowa: A Woman Missionary in Indian Territory shows Crawford's sensitivity to Kiowa history and culture during a period of transition.

The mission still exists and Isabel Crawford is still remembered kindly, according to Clyde Ellis, who introduces this Bison Books edition.

.....

From their first encounters with Christian missionaries, the North American Plains Indians used universal sign language to communicate Psalm 23 among tribes who spoke different oral languages. ....Isabel Crawford, a Baptist missionary to the Kiowa Indians in Oklahoma, translated the Sign Version into literal English. Here is the Psalm 23 translation:

The Great Father above is a shepherd Chief.

I am His and with Him I want not.

He throws out to me a rope and the name of the rope is love and He draws me to where the grass is green and the water not dangerous, and I eat and lie down and am satisfied.

Sometimes my heart is very weak and falls down but

He lifts me up again and draws me into a good road.

His name is WONDERFUL.

Sometime, it may be very soon, it may be a long, long time.

He will draw me into a valley.

It is dark there, but I’ll be afraid not, for it is in between those mountains that the Shepherd Christ will meet me and the hunger that I have in my heart all through this life will be satisfied.

He gives me a staff to lean upon.

He spreads a table before me with all kinds of foods.

He puts His hand upon my head and all the “tired” is gone.

My cup He fills till it runs over.

What I tell is true.

I lie not.

These roads that are “away ahead” will stay with me through this life and after; and afterwards I will go to live in the great house and sit down with the Shepherd Chief forever.

Beautiful! No, we shall not want. you provide for the sparrows. How much more Heavenly Father, will you provide for us! .Amen! You tells us to "rest" in you.. A promise of Your faithfulness and assurance to us ..As isaiah 61 and psalms 91 is written..You restor, renew, and rebuild, the ruined cities within us( the broken places) You make our way straight.. "straightening out our corrupt beliefs" .. yes and amen!
You anoint us with the oil of Your gladness, gives us a crown of Your beauty, instead of ashes ..proclaiming us as a display of Your splendor , made for Your enjoyment .
You are our beloved , and we are Yours.!

I love it when scripture is posted .. So easy to converse back to Him in it .. Thank you!

One of my all time favorite passages.
