In Matthew 12:36 says"But I say to you that for every word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgement"(NKJV). I would of course encourage you to read this verse in context. :) I've been thinking about the words idle conversation a lot this week and was just curious to hear what you may think about these words.

I apologize I misquoted the verse so I want to correct it. Matthew 12:36 "But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgement." NKJV.

Matthew 12:36

God says that individuals will have to account for all of their works, including our secret sins. Even the words we have spoken will be judged.

The word idle means just what it says, 'lazy, useless, barren etc., but in context this is not forbidding talk about pizza and baseball, but rather when it comes to matters dealing directly with God we need to speak wisely, circumspectly, reverently, truthfully etc. In that immediate context Jesus had just been accused of casting out devils by the power of Beelzebub (a master demon) which also amounted to calling the Holy Spirit a De___.

Do we confess Christ with our mouths? (Romans 12:9)
And do our words show the fruit of that?

It makes me think how easy it is to speak 'well' when we are in calm waters. How are hearts really are will be shown in the storms.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. Ps. 19:14 NKJV.

The word idle means," not at work or at ease". I believe when our minds is at idle, we can clearly focus more on a certain subject. And if we start focusing on God's word; I believe that the enemy comes and to disrupt your peace. The enemy doesn't want you to get closer to God. So that's what I believe the meaning of the verse that says a idle mind is the devil's workshop.

This is another take on the concept that every tree that does not produce good fruit shall be cut down.

The word, "idle" is the Greek word, argos -- inactive, i.e. unemployed; (by implication) lazy, useless: KJV -- barren, idle, slow.

Such words as are not good for the hearer to promote them toward faith in God are such useless words.

Of course, that does not mean that we can pick this up as a tool with which to judge that of others, but means that God will judge that of us because such useless words from us reveal the true state of our love for our neighbor and for God.

Another person may be telling us what we do not want to hear by way of constructive criticism but that does not make that person's words to us useless. His or her words are useful but we reject making use of them and that is at least as bad as one who speaks useless words.

We need to judge only that we are being careful to ascertain and walk in God's love.

We cannot afford to pick these sayings up as though provided us as tools with which to judge others. Even when another commits serious death dealing sin we shun the sin, hating the sin, and hoping for the recovery of that person.

But when we begin judging others by their every word, there is no profit in that as it is dogging them in a way that violates love by it's pettiness which causes them to have to walk as on egg shells with us.

Do you actually dare to tell me that what I said to the postman when I was thoroughly disgusted with him was not a good idea? I was afraid of that. I got on my knees before Christ. And apologized. OK?
