John 12:47
I will not judge those who hear me but don't obey me, for I have come to save the world and not to judge it.

I don't understand, i thought the whole point in Jesus was to obey him.

so if some atheist hears the new testament but doesn't obey, he will not be judged?

John 12:47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

While Christ did not come to judge the world, but to save it (John 3:17), those who reject His word and continue in unbelief will be judged on the last day by the truth of His word.

you are wrong, because look john 5:22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,

some translations say "obey" instead of believe. so why are the not judged if they merely "hear" his words but do not obey them.. what if they accidently heard the gospel and yet did not believe or obey. they would not be judged?

As shown in starfield post it says they have someone to judge them an in the next verse jesus goes on to say he is not talking about himself but the father... john 12:49 For i have not spoken of myself but the father which sent me he gave me a commandment what i should say an what i should speak.

hypothetical situation:

say a dude, normal dude, walks pass a church. someone says "Jesus is Lord,"
the dude keeps walking, gets hit by a car and dies.

fast forward to judgement day

on that day

when everybody is judged

that dude will not be judged

because he heard the words of Jesus?

he never rejected it, he heard it, but he never obeyed or believed.

The "dude" will be judged because simply hearing the word isn't what justifies rather it ought to bring transformation of life - regeneration by the Holy Spirit.

Concerning John 12:47-48, the purpose of Christ's first coming wasn't to render eternal condemnation, but to seek and save that which was lost, however eternal condemnation awaits the unsaved.

Starfield is right, The "dude" will be judged and his unbelief has judged him already. What seems to be a contradiction in Jesus words is actually not because he came to us the first time for salvation and the second time will be for both rewards and judgement. There is no way around God's judgment--no loop holes in his law.

Romans14:12
"So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God."

Acts17:30:31
30In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. 31For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”

John 3:17
"He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

God bless! :)

You can pick at the bible, pick up a verse to say that your common sense tells you it says thus and so, but the bottom line is that God is simply "I am". Every single word in scripture is scripture. The attributes of God from Genesis to Revelation are exactly the same.

God loves us, everyone black, white, and yellow.
If we acknowledge Him as our God we become one of His children and live eternally with Him.
If you live outside the family of God by not acknowledging Him, that is what you are judged by. That in itself is a judgment.

If you live within the family, your sins are judged, but the desire of your heart is to obey, and you have forgiveness available.

God cannot live with sin, we are born with the knowledge of sin, so He sent His Son so we can go to Him for salvation.
We are to be holy, with every effort we can put out, and when we fail we are to repent and go to Christ for cleaning.

Joh 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Obeying the commands of God does not save a person, faith does.

Joh 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Obeying the commands of God does not save a person, faith does.
Nonetheless, obedience demonstrates genuine faith. Faith isn't merely a passive acknowledgment of God's existence rather it manifests itself through submission to God's will as one is empowered by His Spirit.

Romans 6:16-17 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

Romans 15:18 For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed,

Galatians 5:6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.

Hebrews 5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

Hebrews 11:7-8 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

1 John 2:4-5 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
