The bible says something like, do unto your neighbor as you wish done unto you...

So unless you want to be hit in the face, don't hit someone...

But in all seriousness I have thought about this multiple times... I fantasize about violence, I love violence... My friends and I used to put on some regulation UFC gloves and go all out on each other... (THIS WAS BEFORE I MET JESUS SO IT'S OKAY!)

I used to love getting drunk and rolling thirty...

But I have came to the conclusion... In every movie what does the really tough guy do when he is hit? He just stands there and offers to be hit again... I know if I would try this I would probably get dropped... But I can dream...

I think all God is trying to do is show us humility and love with this verse...

Retaliation is more along the lines of hate and God is a God of love...

but like i know how to fight, i would allow myself to get beat up if it were for the name of Jesus. but if i just got attacked, my natural reaction would to fight back and then preach jesus...

i would look so backwards if i did that lol

I understand were you come from, but Jesus never struck a single man who struck Him...

The main thing is, you said it was in your nature to preach Jesus. That speaks more volumes about you then anything else I know... You are more of a man then I am...

If you can do that then your faith will be consider great, and if you can forgive those who has harmed you is even more greater. God want us to put our trust in Him.

Matthew 5:12Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Matthew 5
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

You have every right to defend youself.... there is a time an a place for everything thats scripture.... turning th other cheek dosent mean just stand there an let someone beat you to death.... some people will try to say well if God didnt want that to happen he would deliver you from it well God gave you the ability to fight....

Most attacks are done in sin. It is an act of love to prevent the person from making his sin any worse. Defending yourself effectively and properly also accomplishes this.

It is not a sin to fight back to protect yourself if you are being attacked. Self-defence is important however one should understand that it does not always entail exerting physical force. It's also doing everything possible to avoid being fought, for instance finding ways to get yourself out of that situation safely, using common sense and your instinct to avoid potential attack, being aware of your surroundings and avoiding dangerous places, etc., - prevention is your best defence.

In the O.T. God was dealing with the physical nature and they all has failed because of the enemy mightiest warrior "Temptation". And now we are battling with the spiritual nature. So what has been done in the flesh, is now being done in the spirit.

Ephesians 6:12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Mark 14:38
Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

It is up to you which way you want God to perceive you. If He perceive you by the natural, He is going to judge you by the natural; but if you want your natural acts to be covered, then you must perceive His word as spiritual.

Food for thoughts.

Matthew 26:41
“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

As long as it is for Jesus' Name sake you will be fine. I remember how they smite Jesus in the mouth and he did not defend imself, THANK GOD FOR THAT, or I doubt we would have been here today... Also Paul exactly the ame... Fist right in the mouth... Boy people hated it when you talked TRUTH! The World still hates God's Truth. Evident everywhere.

And getting jumped? So what, they hit Paul five times the maximum strokes (whipped) and with sticks once, stoned and left for dead once... He stood up an gave life to a body they carried off to a buriel.... Just amazing how God gives life and blessings, and Satan destroy, rob and seek to kill....

My friend I trust the lord to take over and control me in these situations... He does a WONDERFUL JOB... Jesus had twelve ligeons of angels to HIS call, but He did not call them, i know we have some as well, and the once that wants to harm you will get the hiding of their life when ANGELS dish out....

But to suffer for the Lord's Name sake, is a blessing, a GREAT blessing....

and so i was wondering

It is not a sin to defend yourself..

.God told His people to defend themselves in war many times and there was a lot of killing in self defense even till this day.

It makes no sense, to view that verses as to mean, you can't protect yourself, or your family..

Remember, what did God do, to the Egyptian army that was going to kill the Israelites ? He drowned them in the sea and there they died. One of many examples.

Christ Himself taught to carry a sword .

Luke 22:
35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.

36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.

38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

Now this may have more to do with full filling prophecy .

In Matthew 5: I see why Christ told His disciples to turn the other cheek, and what that means. when you consider the whole chapter.

People take it out of its subject matter to try and apply it to mean in extreme situations, that call for you to actually defend yourself; but they say you can't . It makes no good sense. What does it actually say in Matthew 5: ?

Matthew 5

5 And seeing the multitudes, He went up into a mountain: and when He was set, his disciples came unto him:

( You can see, Christ is teaching His disciples , those that are following Him. What Christ is saying here is Not to the multitude of people. But He is speaking to those that would work for the spreading of Christ message after He has left. His disciples )

2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

(( Why would the disciples be persecuted Falsely ? It was for Christ sake. That being the purpose. they are teaching Christ words. This is those people, going out, to teach Christ. ))

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

(( Why did they persecute the prophets ? Wasn't the reason for teaching God's words ?))

13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

(( Salt adds flavor. and they should have this when they teach people. Salt as , in your personality. The no salt would be bland ))

14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

(( Again more references to teaching the Word. Being a example to others, shinning Christ light in you to the world.
The truth))

15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

21 Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not murder; and whosoever shall murder shall be in danger of the judgment:

22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;

24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

(( again, Christ is teaching them. He will soon be gone, and they will need to listen to His words and instruction ))

25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

(( sound advice . When they have a mission to do, what good are they if they are locked up? ))

26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:

34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:

35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.

36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

(( What can this mean? He is talking to the disciples that are going to be sent out to teach in the world. For example: If they teach, all these things in this chapter to say some one in the synagog , and, and the person who is offended with hearing these truths reaches out, and strikes you on the cheek, then perhaps you said more then he could handle. In that situation that the disciples due to the nature of their work, It would possibly happen. So in this case, it is good to turn the other cheek. ))

((Notice Christ does not say, turn the other cheek, to some one trying to kill you ? Is life and death mentioned in this verse ? ))

40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.

(( Gain this would connect to the turn the other cheek. There reputation or name is important. And with the advice Christ is giving them. I can see how , that it can protect your credibility with people in the community .So that trust is established. and that sets good ground for teaching God's words. ))

41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

(( This just mirrors all of what Christ said already. )))

42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

(( What is the purpose ? read verse 45))

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?

48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

So non of this, cover self defense . It does cover those going out, and how to conduct yourself with people, when your trying to teach people God's word.

In the O.T. God .

Ephesians 6:12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Mark 14:38

God is the same yesterday today and will be forever. So this old testament God thing makes no sense.

Christ never said, like I mentioned in my post in matthew 5 , To allow some one to kill you or pummel you. Christ was on a mission. And his was going to be savior of the world to take away sins. That was not possible if He did not do what He did.

Us on the other hand are expected to fight in life and death situations , and when people attack you for no reason.

NO where in Matthew 5 Does Christ say, turn the other cheek, if some one is beating on you. In that situation, you won't have the option to turn the other cheek.

You don't defend yourself in that situation, because you think, that Christ would not approve, then you deserve what you get. And you teach that one beating on you that it is okay to attack week Christians .

Consider this verse, if you did not provide for your family your worse then a infidel. How much more worse are you, if you don't protect them from attackers ?
1 Timothy 5:

8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

The memories of all the pictures of violence you have seen that was put in your mind, especially when you were a baby, is what the problem is. Your brain is like the hard drive on a computer, and when something is put in there, it is there somewhere even if it isn't in conscious memory. The Holy Spirit you have received is working to manage your brain's hard drive.

The more you put in God's words and pictures of what is of God the better you will be able to handle life.

There was a point where Christ chased everyone out of the temple with a whip.
There was a time where Christ was motionless as others drove nails into his hands.

I think there is a time and place for all things...
and we must stay close enough to God to know the differences as they arise.

God Bless,
Max
