I have heard other believers talk about a spiritual wilderness , where believers are often taken to grow and deepen in their walk with God.
What exactly is this "wilderness" and how do we know if we are entering it?

It can be trials, even a time of major temptation and weakness. A time of struggle caused from unforeseen life events that test us and our faith. It's a time God uses to temper us and rebuild our faith harder than it was before, a time of self-revelation through what God is teaching us, and a time of overall growth. My wilderness lasted around 10 years, and just like the ancient Israelites, it was my own rejection and failure to obey that kept me there so long.

This is my opinion of what you are asking, though I have never really heard anyone coin the term you used, I do somehow relate it to my life though.

Edit: Also I should say that i entered a "spiritual wilderness" not very long after I believed in Jesus and was baptized. Still reminds me of the ancient Israelites once they were saved from the bondage of Egypt (sin allusion). They were tested in the wilderness until they came to a full understanding of what God wished of them.

In the N.T. there are two words for wilderness, one is used thirty three times...

G2048
ἔρημος
erēmos
er'-ay-mos
Of uncertain affinity; lonesome, that is, (by implication) waste (usually as a noun, G5561 being implied): - desert, desolate, solitary, wilderness.

The other is used twice and is derived from the first...

G2047
ἐρημία
erēmia
er-ay-mee'-ah
From G2048; solitude (concretely): - desert, wilderness.

In both cases, solitude and being alone are the primary meaning, with the implication of a desert. If we think about this, a spiritual wilderness would be a place of being alone in a dry (spiritually) place.

Matthew 3:1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judæa,

was outside the norm of mankind as man wants control and to control Hmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a little food for that
And he suffered outside the camp
We all have sufferings and we all can learn from them without hardened hearts, by trusting God through them
Acts 1:3 After He had suffered much and then died, He showed Himself alive in many sure ways for forty days. He told them many things about the holy nation of God.
[h=3]John 16:33[/h]New Life Version (NLV)

[SUP]33 [/SUP]I have told you these things so you may have peace in Me. In the world you will have much trouble. But take hope! I have power over the world!”

So maybe do not be of this world and go into the wilderness being born again of the Spirit of God, alive forever more in eternity by God through the cross of Chrsit
