Just wondering if God protects his people -or does it have something to do with how obedient we are to His Word?
If I recall correctly, Jesus prayed to the Father asking him for protection for all believers from the enemy (in the book of John )to what extent are we assured of divine protection and is there something we could do to either forgo it or ensure it?

I think we can step outside of his protection and place ourselves in danger. I think God can also allow suffering and calamity. Job would be a good example, but we should pray for protection daily and stay grounded in our faith.

[h=3]Matthew 6:9-13[/h]King James Version (KJV)

[SUP]9 [/SUP]After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
[SUP]10 [/SUP]Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
[SUP]11 [/SUP]Give us this day our daily bread.
[SUP]12 [/SUP]And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
[SUP]13 [/SUP]And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

I think regardless of the situation, God's grace is sufficient and it's through our struggles and infirmities caused by life's struggles that glorify God the most in the eyes of onlookers. Our unyielding faith in the face of adversity and strife is a powerful testimony, even to death.

I think disobedience would be the main way. If as a child your parents warn you not to touch a hot stove eye cuz it will burn, but you touch it anyway, you are gonna get burned. It's a simple and probably overused illustration, but I think it's effective.

It could also be that sometimes when a certain strife or suffering arises, it may not be that we are being unprotected, but that God is actually punishing us for disobedience. According to Job, the devil has to have permission before he can cause harm. God might raise his protection for a time, either as punishment, or even just to have our faith tested.

Then there are more "real world" times. If we know we shouldn't be in a certain crowd of people, but we decide to mix with them anyway, any harm that may come may not be God doing anything at all, but us who have brought pain and suffering or hardship on ourselves.
