Is it just my imagination, or are there a lot of people who call themselves Christians who are devoted to flattering the “right” people in an effort to receive preferential treatment when it comes to church committee assignments, and the like?

Yeah but thats human nature. People are willing to use the name of God to obtain power, and it will always be that way no matter how disgusting that is.
