Genesis 1:3-5
And God said, Let the be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

Genesis 1:14-15
And God said let the be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years. And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light up the earth: and it was so.

need some clarification here. Where did the light come from in verse 3-5 if He put the stars / light in the sky in verse 14.

God made it. Clearly He is differentiating here. The greater and lesser lights rule the day and night, but God doesn't need these for it to be day and night. I think this is saying that God alone is sovereign over his creation, and He says when it can be day and night, not the greater or lesser lights, that only have their ruler ship over day and night through God.

Genesis 1:15 - 18
[SUP]15 [/SUP]And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. [SUP]16 [/SUP]And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. [SUP]17 [/SUP]And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, [SUP]18 [/SUP]And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

I am going to do a copy and paste of an explanation of this that is much better than I can explain it. It is from Ton Bradford's torah class. I have deleted some of what Tom says about these passages.

On the first day, God said He created light. Yet, it was on the fourth day that God created the Sun…..or as the Bible puts it, “the larger light to rule the day”. God lit up the Earth on the first day but didn’t create the Sun until the fourth day?

The Hebrew word for “light” is “owr”. This word does NOT mean an object that emits light…..like the sun or the moon or the stars, or a lamp. Rather it means illumination, enlightenment. This word is closely associated with life and joy and good. Then this light was divided away from the darkness. Only the light is called “good”, the darkness is not.

Now lets move down to verse 14 when it starts to talk about there being lights in the sky to divide day and night, and in verse 16 when God says he created the larger light (the sun) to rule the day and the smaller light (the moon) to rule the night. We see an entirely different word is used for “light” here, than what is used in earlier verses. Here, the Hebrew word is “maorot”. Maor means an object that emits light (maorot is plural, lights). If I may use a poetic word, the luminaries (objects that illuminate) like the sun, the moon, the stars, and lamps, and of course meteors are the meaning.

When God created “light”, “owr” (singular), He created illumination and enlightenment, a basic requirement for life.. In the Book of Revelation we’re told that when God destroys the old earth, and then creates a new one, there will no longer be maorot (light emitting objects like a sun or moon) but instead God will be our light, our illumination. I t’s this same type of “godly light” that is being spoken of here in verses 3 and 4, but another kind is referred to in verses 14-16.

Conversely let’s look at the word “darkness”. The Hebrew for this word is “choshek”.In the Hebrew culture this word was used as the opposite of “owr”(the opposite of illumination). Choshek carries in it the sense of blindness, of misery, of falsehood and ignorance. It means something that leads to death and destruction.

So let us be clear: in verses 3 and 4 what God created was illumination and enlightenment of which HE was the source; but it was also divided and separated away from what was the opposite of those things: darkness, blindness and falsehood.

The Magnificent Lord God Almighty created and reestablished the earth , from what happened in verse 2 ( Hebrew )

It's later on another day that the sun, and moon, and stars were created. Or at least shining on the earth again.

Genesis 1:4 "And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness."

Genesis 1:5 "And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day."

What does it mean then when God said, "Let there be light" here then ?

God's plan, includes you and I, and all of God's children.

The choice is choosing between the "Light", which is the Spirit of God", and darkness. Ezekiel 28:12-19 declares Satan, "the King of Tyrus", to be that darkness in the world. Then if your choice be darkness, verse 18 declares your destination after judgment: "I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth..."

God is Light. He is the light. These few scripture out of many document He is the Light spoken of there:

John 8:12

Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

John 14:6

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

2 Samuel 22:29 For thou art my lamp, O Lord: and the Lord will lighten my darkness.

Nehemiah 9:11-13

11 And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters.

12 Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they should go.

13 Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments:

Job 33:28
He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

Psalm 4:6

There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.

Psalm 18:28
You, O LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.

Psalm 119:105

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

John 1

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

etc.

All prophecies in the entire Bible that refer to God's elect, or the children of God; those that happen to be in God's will, are called "children of light". This also applies to prophecies that are given in days, or solar years. [see Daniel 12:11]

In turn, all prophecies dealing with Satan, his wickedness, and his children are given in months, or moons. Satan's children, then are called the "children of darkness", or "of the night". [see Revelation 13:4, 5] Satan is the darkness that is the negative part of God's plan. Satan was here from the beginning of this earth age ( 2 Peter 3:5-18 ; Ephesians 1:4 ; 1 peter 1: 20 ;Jeremiah 4: 21-28 )

Christ was also here, for he is the "Tree of Life". We will read of this later in the second and third chapters of Genesis. When God refers to trees in symbolism, they are persons.

Dividing the light from the darkness has a dual meaning. God is The light over his creation, and darkness represents evil has always been upon earth after Adam and Eve sinned.

I just posted this a few days ago on another thread. I guess that's ok. Maybe it will help.

The Creation of light 3-5. “Let there be...” This is the command pattern for every stage of creation. Light
is spoken into existence. The kin of light under consideration does not appear to be that which represents the glory of God such as we find in the dedication of the Temple. This is light that is comprised of matter. It is created light that is not produced by celestial sources. These are not yet created.

This same light is then separated from the darkness. This is an interesting phenomenon. From this one statement we learn that light and darkness do not naturally separate. It required an act of God to separate the two. What does this say about the theory of natural determinacy – the influence of natural law? It did not yet exist. Heaven and earth are matter, light is energy. These are the two basic elements of physics. At this point in creation, there are no natural laws in place to influence their behavior. Light is separated from the darkness by an act of God. This will apparently begin the sequence of time.

Matter and energy are being organized into a more complex life sustaining system. Light
is assigned to a specific function – to measure time, 5. God gives the definition of what constitutes a day. Light = day + morning. Darkness = night + evening. The combination of these two represent a 24 hour period of time. This same standard of measurement is used in every stage of creation. From the first day, before the sun, moon, and stars were created, until after these are placed in the heavens as the standard measurement of evening and morning representing one day. This standard of measurement does not change through the chapter. The creation of the sun, moon and stars are assigned to then maintain the division of light and darkness.

I kind of hold to a white hole creation theory - where God creates everything in the span of about 1 light year - and then causes everything to expand from that point - to where the light from them hit the earth on day 4 i believe - as the stars get away from the center of the universe(extreme amount of gravity) time actually accelerates - where the rate of time is affected by gravity - we see this with a black hole, and we are at or near the center of the universe - as of now

The earth can be ~6000 years - and accelerated time out in space - I just thought of this by why would time have to accelerate - because if the stars were moving at the same rate of time - we wouldn't be able to see anything from all the light

this isn't a full explanation of white hole creation but just a quick snapshot

actually before Adam and Eve sinned. Because Satan was here before them.
