If our spirits died with our bodies, then what is eternal life all about? Our spirits will sleep
Why do you think Jesus told a story about life after death if we just "soul sleep" after death?

The main theme of the story of Lazarus the beggar and the rich man is about what happened to them after they died. Why didn't Jesus tell a story about sleeping spirits instead?

It is quite apparent Dan that you are basing all your doctrine on what the churches and the men of renowned (theologians) have taught you through an incorrect hermeneutics that is not biblical. The proper form of bible study is it is its own interpreter, the bible is its own dictionary, the bible is its own grammar book, and the bible is its own commentary, so to sum it all up the Bible alone and in its entirety interprets itself. Mt 13:34 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them: The question to you is why in actuallity it is parabolic to you but you dont think it is parabolic and to me it does not sound parabolic but actually is parabolic. Oh the wisdom of God!
1) God did nor torment Job, Satan did! In this Historical PARABOLIC STORY. Job is a picture of Christ and Christ had to pay for the sins of the elect and of course God would have to allow it to fulfill scripture. Job is a Picture of Christ while Job (Christ) three friends that God had great distaste for represent those who say they are his people and are not. Notice how their statement actually sound biblical but we need to ask why did God rebuke them. The Three friends are a picture of local churches today.
2) You Quoted 1Samuel 16:23 NLT And whenever the tormenting spirit from God troubled Saul, David would play the harp. Then Saul would feel better, and the tormenting spirit would go away. The word Tormenting is not in the original Hebrew. You are using a poor translation. I would image you are actually quoting a doctrine that is in your paraphrase study bible I would suggest you use the KJV or the YTL or the original Hebrew and Greek and do your own word study with the bible alone.
3) for the word grave and hell being the same Hebrew word means hell is the grave and the grave is hell. So when we read this passage in Mt 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to DESTROY (AV- <622> perish 33, destroy 26 times), BOTH SOUL AND BODY IN HELL(The grave).
Amazing how all the churches cling on to this doctrine of literal eternal torture of the non elect. There is great gain for the churches to teach this false doctrine! What would you do without this club? I would suggest to you that you ask yourself honestly why you want those who don’t listen to you to be tormented forever and ever in pain and suffering because you don’t think death is enough punishment.
GOD Does not torture your doctrine does that!

Hi limbo,

Nice to met you, even if you claim my exegesis is from man and denominations. I do not attnd a church and have not for two years, just to let you know. So I am not a part of any denomination.

Well, actually, this thread is about a single question which no one has answered directly. The question is simple:
"Why would Jesus tell a story about life after death if it is not so?"

Now about you post.1) Job was tormented by satan but with God's permission. Seems you left the part out where God gave satan permission.

2) This "spirit" vexed or tormented Saul. This is very clear from the context and you seem to be nit picking here.

3) Somehow you managed to forget that Gehenna can be translated as hell and in the AV it has been translated as hell 9 times and fire 3 times. Gehenna only exists in the New Testament 12 times. I think you meant to say Hades, which has also been translated as hell. Seems like you failed to mention that which seems a bit dishonest?
