You know the story. I have been pondering this question. I heard a preacher say " Lazarus was in heaven and Jesus brought him back to earth". I don't think I believe this. If this is true do you think Lazarus wanted to go back?

The Bible says he slept. Medically dead, but his soul didn't leave yet. His soul did what Jesus said it was doing... sleeping.

well, I don't believe in "soul sleep". I believe that He was in Heaven. As far as did Lazarus want to come back. that can't be answered by anyone but Lazarus. Would you want to come back here after being in God's presence? Not me.

soul sleep is a different issue, and is disproved by any passage about Paradise or Abraham's Bosom.
I am not insinuating that a person's soul never leaves their body. But it seems to be the case that the soul doesn't leave immediately, or God kept their soul there just for these specific miraculous events.

Paradise/Abraham's Bosom, maybe, but not heaven.

Why not heaven? Paul said to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

This is indeed a mystery that I have no answer for. It's like the age old question that has perplexed man since the beginning..."How many licks DOES it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop...The world may never know!"

eh, you should re-read the verse that you are referencing. It doesn't mean what you are saying. It says I'd "rather" be with the Lord. Also, the Lord is Jesus, not the Father, in this case.

I don't want to derail the thread with a discussion of "instant reward upon death" verses "waiting for the Last Day". The Catholic idea that heaven is NOW, after death, is not how the Bible portrays things. But if you are interested in that, we can start another thread.

I'll re-read that verse. Thanks for the input. Oh wait a sec...isn't this the part where I am supposed to bite your head off and call you a heretic for not agreeing over something that has nothing to do with our salvation? I wouldn't want to go against what seems to be established protocol.

To be absent from the body is to be present with Christ, Or in hell, in some cases. Your soul go either 2 places immediately after death, with the Lord in heaven, or to hell.

John 11:12His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.”

Matthew 9:24
he said, “Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep.” But they laughed at him.

Daniel 12:2
Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.

Job 19:25 I know that my redeemer lives,
and that in the end he will stand on the earth.
26 And after my skin has been destroyed,
yet in my flesh I will see God;
27 I myself will see him
with my own eyes—I, and not another.

Matthew 5:8
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

John 9:39
Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.”

When Paul was writing Jesus had ascended. When Lazarus died Christ was still here on earth. Jesus revealed in Luke that departed souls were in Abrahams bosom or in a place of torment with real flames. I rather suspect that Lazarus was better off when he was in Abrahams bosom but in service to the Lord he came back. Note that Jesus called him by name or else all of the dead would have come forth. Interesting that we do not have anything recorded about Lazarus' second physical death. I wonder if he may have been translated when Christ ascended into heaven?

I always pondered this too. There is no mention of Lazarus After Death Experience in the scriptures. There is no doubt in my mind Lazarus was dead. Perhaps he was in Abraham's bosom, temporary state of awareness which what I think probably happened, but it's my speculation.

It's just worth elaborating on though, because of very little, if any, biblical support for what happened to him.

Real flames, I doubt that, I don't think real flames would have much effect on a non-physical soul. It's a metaphor that describes torment nevertheless.

[h=3]Ecclesiastes 3[/h]
19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
20 All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.
21 Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?
