I was considering going to a lutheran church, just wondering why they are lutherans in that they vary from other demonations?

In paticular, I was wondering there view on salvation, how a person is saved and such. I saw something on a churches website about grace having certain means.

Well, Martin Luther is credited with beginning the Reformation, and the Lutherans get their name from him, if that tells you anything.

- Salvation is by faith alone, grace is freely given and cannot be earned.
- Instead of the Catholic idea of transubstantiation, they believe in something called consubstantiation.

That's really all I can say, and I may have gotten a thing or two wrong. All I know is that most Lutherans I run in to are pretty nice folks. That Martin Luther wrote some good hymns, my favorite by him being: A Mighty Fortress is Our God.

We were supposed to read his On Christian Liberty in my theology class, but we spent too much time on Athanasius (not that one can spend too much time on Athanasius...)

Not sure what your faith background is, but the Lutheran church will likely be very liturgical. have a sneak peak: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFGDgdN_Hx8

Just for the sake of curiosity, maybe visit one some time. I dunno. If you want high liturgy, try the Episcopalians, but they also ordain openly gay preists/bishops and women priest(esses)/bishops. I believe Methodists are a reform of the Episcopailians, also have women ministers. Presbyterianism might be on the other side of the coin.

Hey, it might be fun to go on a church safari! just visit a bunch and see what they do.

Maybe this will be handy: http://www.beliefnet.com/Entertainment/Quizzes/BeliefOMatic.aspx

I am a lutheran. Yeah, my churches services on are quite liturgical, but for instance we had a worship service tonight and these are very far from liturgical. Electric guitar, drums, you get the idea. The churches in my country definitely do not tolerate homosexuality, that includes Lutheran churches.

How do we vary from other demonations? Well our Sunday services are quite liturgical, don't know what else to say.. We are not religious people, we are looking for a personal relationship with Christ. I am talking about my church here, I don't know how things are in every other Lutheran church.

not exactly true....the vote has been badly misrepresented....while i disagree with it, the church put the decision in the hands of the local regions and local churches within those regions as to whether to ordain openly gay clergy instead of having a national ruling on it....the region i'm in has already voted not to ordain....so don't be too quick to judge

and it was the elca lutheran church in the news for this, not all lutheran churches, just for clarification....there are over 300 registered lutheran denominations
