There is nothing wrong with drinking a little alcohol. It is there for us when life is stressful. Of course, the long-term answer is to figure out how to remove the stress. I think we'll all outgrow the need for alcohol, sooner or later.

People who drink a lot won't like this post, I suspect.

I'd be cautious in thinking alcohol is only there as a stress reliever. We should run to God when we're stressed, not alcohol, because when we run to alcohol that becomes our god and we could become prone to drunkenness. Also, alcohol is definitely NOT a need, as you stated. I've gone 20 years without drinking alcohol. If it was a need, I would have drank some by now. There are other ways to relieve stress other than alcohol.

I am not against alcohol or condemning it, as the Bible does neither. It's perfectly okay to drink alcohol as long as you don't become drunk or cause a brother or sister in Christ to stumble. But we always have to keep 1 Corinthians 10:31 in our heads as we drink alcohol. Does it bring glory to God?

Like I said, the real answer is finding out how to remove stress from our lives, and certainly we should go to the Lord to find out how to do that. Once the stress is gone, the "need" for alcohol disappears. I also stopped drinking long ago.

This is a topic that many people get in a knot about. I once had a pastor tell me: "I wish drinking wine wasn't in the bible."
When Christ turned the water into wine, it was a celebratory festival, a wedding reception, if you will.
Paul told Timothy "Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities."
Clearly it has some medicinal value along with the alcoholic affect.

Some people can drink it, some can't. I can't as it becomes a controlling factor to me. I have no problem with someone else drinking, nor being around it. Some people do. As was said, put no stumbling block in front of your brother. Be cautious and mindful when you drink. Don't let it become your master.
Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.

But the thing is, stress is inevitable, especially in the life of a Christian (as our best life isn't now). We have stress from jobs, so unless I want to go jobless for the rest of my life, I can't remove that stress. There's stress from school, so unless I want to just be a bum the rest of my life, I need to get that degree. So we shouldn't be teaching people to remove the stress, we should be teaching people to cope and respond righteously during times of stress.

I am one of those people who are "in a knot about it". After my kids were grown and I became elderly I found that after a day's work a glass of deep red wine, a rocking chair, and a good uplifting book was wonderful. I checked scripture, it agreed. My church said that if you do that, you may not be a member, we will just let you come to church. I decided I belong to God, first, God said OK, so I enjoy my glass of wine.

A young friend of mine is very upset because her elderly mother who has never drank before is over indulging every evening.

My Father could not have a glass of wine, he lost control and would have more so he couldn't have the first one. My son had too many glasses of wine, and smoked a pipe on top of it. He will soon be dead, cancer. I found that alcoholics can not have any alcohol, it is part of the disease that they can't have the first drink. What does scripture say about these things?

Wine is mentioned 257 times in the NRSV, and some of those scripture do talk about wine to relax and express joy.

I am completely bewildered!

wrong... i'll rephrase what you are saying, " in order to fill the void of the struggles in life, drink alcohol instead of surrendering to God "

As I grow older, I learn how to better deal with challenging situations, and life becomes easier.

I am not aware of anything in the Bible that says we can't drink at all. I think it's best not to drink, if one can manage that, but I think a little alcohol is okay if one feels they need it. Interesting how I take it from both sides, on this issue.

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. [h=3]1 Peter 5:8[/h]i'm not going to even risk it, and why do i need alcohol to " magnify my mind " when i have Jesus? i'm sorry i just to not let that get into my system specially in these times

I don't really drink to relax or get drunk. That's kind of self-medicating to me. Beer just tastes like sunshine :)

I hope you don't drink large quantities.
Nah man. I dehydrate pretty easily and am kind of a health nut. 1 bottle whenever I do drink beer. 2 bottles if it's really good beer (Heineken, Wild Blue)

Ever wonder why the Pharisees called the Lord a "winebibber?" Matt. 11:19. (Not that He was what they had implied.)

The Lord's first miracle was to make more wine. John 2.

"Should I cease my new wine, which cheers both God and men, - -?" Judges 9:7-15. :)

(All things in moderation.)
