do you think the fear of hell make people want to follow god rules ? what if there was no hell do you think most of the population would actually listen ?

is it right for someone who kinda do not believe in god but there is a "if" that if god is real they feel and fear of going to hell so they try to believe and follow god " just in case" will god accept that ? or is it wrong?

I can see this as the example Jesus warned us of in following just in case, doing so with the wrong motives.
Hell is a wakeup call for some and serves the Lord purpose, as well as judgement for those who consciously and knowingly reject him, again which serves the Lords purpose since rebellion would not be allowed in heaven.
All things work to the Glory of God, its actually quite fascinating.

Matthew 7
21
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

Jesus isn't afraid to tell it like it is, neither should we be.

well the fear of hell to obey God or even to give your life to him sounds like a horrible way to follow Christ. obeying because you fear hell? how will you ever experience a loving relationship with him living in fear like that?

Amen to that... It saddens me when people try to scare unbelievers with hell to believe in God..

OK, I'm assuming we are talking about obeying God out of fear, correct?
There is a fine line here. God is love and He is our Father. He deserves our love, respect and fear as well. So it's ok to fear God Himself, NOT fear going to hell. We don't sin because we don't want to upset God. That should be our main concern.

do you think the fear of hell make people want to follow god rules ? Of course it does!
The fear of Adonai is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of holy ones is understanding.
[SUP]11 [/SUP]For with me, your days will be increased;
years will be added to your life.
[SUP]12 [/SUP]If you are wise, your wisdom helps you;
but if you scoff, you bear the consequences alone.”

[SUP]30 [/SUP]For the One we know is the One who said,
“Vengeance is my responsibility;
I will repay,”

and then said,
Adonai will judge his people.”[SUP][i][/SUP]

[SUP]31 [/SUP]It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God!

A beautiful thing happens with that fear, out of it is a better understanding of what love is, and truth.

if people follow God for that reason, then thats bad imho. Because thats amounts to fake love, and God dose not want that.

You can lay the blame solely at the feet of people, who teach hell fire and brimstone, without knowledge into what those passages are actually saying. Because they seem to neglect the fact, we have a very Loving Heavenly Father.

hmm i think it was used a lot in the 1800's for example, nowadays it is definitely not emphasized but yes I would say that if one believed in the bible and in the afterlife then fear of hell would certainly motivate one to repent even if it just on the subconscious level.

Repenting and getting saved is such an emotional experience though that I dont think it is seen as an act of fear of hell but again maybe on the subconscious level that is what is going on.

I know I would repent all over again (probably) if someone could demonstrate that the afterlife was real and my unbelief was sending me to hell....however, since i do not have any reason to think it is true I have no fear whatsoever.

I can tell you, as an atheist, that this tactic is attempted all the time. However, as atheists do not believe in Hell it is not much of a threat.

Are you familiar with the song lyric, "I know there ain't no heaven, but I pray there ain't no hell"? It is that fear of Hell, which is so hard to shake, that brings some atheists back to belief in God. Fear of God is a more powerful force than love of God.

I should point out that many atheists have completely gotten over their fear of Hell. Once that fear is gone then making threats of hellfire becomes a fruitless endeavour on the part of believers wishing to convert atheists. Christians wishing to use this tactic would do well to determine whether their prospective atheist convert has any latent fear remaining.

This is rather contradictory. Either a person believes, or they don't. if people want to try and play it safe by being religious, then they will still go to Hell.

Either you accept Jesus for who he is, that he is the son of God, that he died and rose again as final sacrifice for your sin, then you repent of your sin, forgive everyone who has wronged you and pledge to follow Jesus and enter into a relationship with Jesus, OR, you reject it all and end up going to Hell.

I am not going to be politically correct to appease a bunch of atheists and other non-believers who seem to be on some kind of moral crusade to protect people from being "scared" by being told about Hell.

Hell is real and that is where most people are going to end up. Hell is ont a nice place, but of course we see the lies about Hell, it does not really exist, we all end up going to heaven anyway, you get to do nice stuff in Hell and so on.

WRONG. Hell is punishment and a prison initially meant for the fallen Angels ,it is a dark hideous place where your spirit will be locked away in for eternity.

If someone asks you for directions and asks which road to take, do you send them down the road which leads through a ghetto with constant gang warfare or along the nice rural route with pleasant scenery, or do you just say "it all leads to same place, just do what you like", they then end up being shot because they chose the route down the Ghetto. Same with God, people need to know the truth accept it or reject it. Its a simple choice to make.

The same Holy Spirit that creates a fear of hell can also create a desire to follow God. Two separate things but the same source.

I believe that it is a direction. Something that can be built on.
I started with the base instinctive knowledge of God, then I learned of sin and punishment and feared it (thus opening the door to faith), and God showed me Himself through His Word (spoken and written), miracles, and other believers. That made it God as real as me.

I'm in AWE of God, but I don't FEAR Him...
because I cannot LOVE someone I FEAR...
Jer 32:40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.

Fear to depart
you should have a fear to depart from Gods law.
many do not have that fear

Exo 20:18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.
they took off!

Exo 20:19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.

Exo 20:20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

Fear not...but fear
why is this so unexplainable?

if you run into a verse that is unexplainable
thank King James
he ruled over a committe that was supposed to translate the Bible
and one who made a mistake printing it was exacuted...

they did not tick off the king..

No would YOU as a committee say for everyone in the country to kneel bow down worship and reverance God?
when they had a king who claimed ultimate authority?

There are several words that god SOFTI-FIED due to fear of loosing heads

reverence is one of them
worship is another

the word BLESS was a total manufacture of a word to replace the fact hundreds of time we should KNEEL WHEN WE WORHIP GOD
king didnt like that
kings dont kneel you know.

Total dedication to God, they were afraid to say so.
King james wishy washies again, cant stand up for the truth, wanting to keep their heads...

Exo 20:20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

Correct answer:
Two very different words both translated into FEAR cause they were chicken to translate the last one right.
Both got translated the same cause they were afraid to translate the second one correctly

so no one studies anymore, of course they go to a web site and ask other people who study not
and sometimes listen to basic errors and they get mixed up

they should have said
FEAR from DEPARTING from EVERYTHING GOD SAYS and FOLLOW IT

no matter what king says otherwise
OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!

ok so just call everything fear and confuse it and we can live
i other places the commitee softi-fied it

when you cannot figure out a verse
GO LOOK IT UP

Whenever you see FEAR GOD
Now you know
DEDICATE AND FOLLOW HIM 100 percent!
reverance!

it means
GIVE HIM TOTAL 100% ALLEGIANCE even if it means death!

Off with their heads!

It is frightening to me to live without even knowing of the power and majesty of the God who created us and the law God operates our world with. I love the law. It is like putting boundaries of protect around us.

I watched a family who was raising their teens with drugs, sex on the front lawn, minds too undisciplined for school. It was a terrible frightening life, even looking at it from the outside. Even if they could have known the law without God they could have achieved some happiness. If they could have added the Holy Spirit to knowing the law, it would be like taking crystals and turning them into diamonds. Fake into true reality.

Without God, they are dead and there is judgment, it is true. It is frightening to think about. I read about the judgment coming to us because of our attitude toward law, taking it out of our worship saying spirit replaces it instead of leading us to it. With both it is complete. But people who don't know the beauty of the Lord can't conceive of the judgment, either. When we show them the beauty and they turn it down, we can show them pictures God gives of the judgment of the last days and they don't know that either. So we can't frighten people into knowing God, anyway. They just laugh at us.

Being frightened of judgment is for us who have the comfort and love of Christ and His saving grace.

Hi DennyMack,

If a person truly believes that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, then he has life through His name. There is no rule keeping involved in salvation for we are saved by the grace of God.

As far as hell is concerned, the Bible says that the wages of sin is death (not hell). Praise God that the gift of God is eternal life - through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All praise to the glory of His grace.

:)

Hi
I think the the people that follow GODs rules out of fear are following a works based thing( the five senses)its not of the kind of faith that paul preached.

IMO it is put upon people all the time, even in church where they tell you to turn around and greet someone.

If you see someone coming towards you and you don't want to shake their hand or give them a hug,but you shake their hand or give them a hug anyway......tell me...is that in truth.

The bible says that if its not of faith it is sin.....just saying.....of course, thats radical, but its what the bible says.

what if there was no hell do you think most of the population would actually listen ?
Human beings that are not reborn will naturaly go by their 5 senses(things they can see, taste, hear, smell and feel.)not by faith

the bible says that we walk by faith, not by sight.

In Psalm 90:3 states, "Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men." and Proverbs 1:7 states, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction."

It is biblical for God to use destruction as a means to cause men to stop and consider their end. The fear of the judgment of God, and His ability to cast into hell after taking the life of whomever, is a powerful motivator to move men to repentance. Having said that, God also expects the believer to grow in faith and knowledge and ultimately serve God not out of fear, but rather, out of love.

In the 1970's the Baptists actively engaged in Scare tactic Salvation. Many of those past leaders now state they know many of the "conversions" were not real.

The Fear of the Lord is not showing someone a movie about hell and then bullying them into making a choice. I saw that happen all the time as a kid, with churhc movie nights and running movies like "THe Burning Hell" by Estus W. Pirkle, The Thief in the Night series, etc

The Job of conviction is the Holy Ghost and he does not require our help in who he chooses to convict. If the man of God behind the pulpit has true anointing and preaches the true Gospel, the Holy Ghost will convict.

We do need to restate the simple message of a heaven to gain and a hell to shun though and then let the Holy Ghost do his job.
