I just spent several hours in a life group. Even after we had covered all the material we just stayed around talking well into the night. Not about football or what we saw on television last night, but about Jesus Christ and serving Him. My new home church is the first church I've been to that seems to actually be striving to be real people of the Book without excuses. By that I mean I've been to churches before that would strive in many aspects but make excuses in a few different areas.

So my question is: What is the difference between the church described in Acts and the one of today? Why do people make so many excuses about why we don't do this or that anymore?

Is it truly unrealistic to expect people to crucify their worldly desires and live for Jesus Christ? To stop spending their extra income on unnecessary entertainments, buying bigger houses than they need, and stuffing their faces? To preach the Gospel at all times even when it means we are faced with death, tortures, joblessness, and ridicule? To stop listening to ungodly popular music and television shows? To put their nose in the Bible as if their life depended on breathing the air that is only found between the pages?

The church of acts is a misnomer, as the BOOK OF ACTS contains the history of numerous first century A.D. CHURCHES as well as the deeds of some of the Apostles.

The Church is the bride of Christ. By Church of Acts I meant the living witness of Jesus Christ during the time period that the book of Acts took place. Not this or that individual church. In the same instance I said "versus the church of today" signifying time periods, not places or locations.

You might define the ministry of the little flock and the ministry of the new man, as seen established in the book of Acts.

Acts is a transitional book in the preserved arrangement, it is for our admonition and our learning as the new creature. Who are you in the household of God, that is another good thing to define, for our identity "today"- why do you say we, the "new creature" are the bride? The church "today" the one new man is masculine, not feminine (regardless of some modern translations that corrupt this truth). Also, while we are considering the "house" or "church" God is building "today", notice we never read about a kingdom of priests in the epistles of our apostle.

Rightly dividing the word of truth is absolutely necessary as a study method of approach, by the design & instruction of God.

I think that our culture of today is the culture the bible tells of for the last days. I don't think you can live in this culture and keep close to the Lord. The reason I say this is that we must renew our minds daily, and we must watch our thoughts, even, that they be centered on Christ. Can you imagine Christ reading our books, going to our movies, or watching our TV? We learn that our minds are like a giant hard drive. We have a filter system and an erase from memory button, but once on that hard drive it is there for good.

For the first 100 years or so of the church, there wasn't the big rift between the Jews and gentiles, and gentiles went to synagogue often to learn of God. So a Christian was aware of his walk with the Lord as much on Tues morning as on Sabbath morning. That walk was a community walk. I read a report done at that time made by a Roman officer reporting on the new religion to his government about whether this new religion was a threat to them. The report said that the main thing he saw in them was the love and care they took in each other.
