My pastor wants everyone in church to speak in tongues. We are Baptist but believe in the gifts and practice them. Does speaking in an unknown tongue gives the evidence that we are spirit filed and saved believers? I have friends who are believers in Jesus and they do not practice this. They lead a spirit filled life and are wonderful people of the faith. What does it mean for the whole church to be toungers in the spirit? Who will this edify and how do we interpret this if everyone is babbling? I for one want to be able to know what is being said. He said that he was in Croatia and spoke in tongue, and the people understood him because he was speaking in their native tongue about the Lord. I love the Lord with all my heart and soul, and I have just only talked to him in my native tongue English in which he knows. In speaking in tongue does that make me a super saint and put me on a higher level than other believers? I think after 20 years, I should be at another level in this spiritual journey. I am trying not to use the word Christian...because my pastor says that is the wrong terminology.. We are saved believers. This sets us apart from others who say and use the term Christian..yet they really are not and to remember Christian is not a denomination. Our mandate is to get them to the church..Lead them to Christ...Form community.... Put them to work within the church and pray for church growth and tongue talkers!!!. Is tongues still needed?...or is it just a preference for those who want it?
Just asking.

Yes The only Initial Evidence of the infilling of the true Genuine Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues. Tongues are needed. Ephs. 6 Jude 1:20 Acts 2, 10, 19. . Its about obeying Jesus Christ and what He said to do in John 3. You want to go higher and father in God? You can! God gives the Holy Spirit to all who ask in faith.

Oh my goodness here we go again.

Is your congregation Jewish?

Ask your pastor what he thinks the perfect of 1 Cor 13:10 is if he can tell?

Tongues are actual human languages for the record.

Yes, speaking in tongues is the sign of receiving the Holy Spirit. If you don't have Holy Spirit you don't belong to Christ. You can't be saved without it.

I suppose God's gift of salvation and grace is still so controversial that we humans keep adding requirements to it, whether it's works, speaking in tongues, etc.

No one today can speak in tongues as the apostles did in Acts 2. Miraculous signs, as speaking in tongues, was for a specific purpose and time which has long past. The purpose of signs was to bring about the complete written, revealed word of God by inspired writers and they used signs to confirm that word. Since God's word was completely revealed with John penning Revelation, then those signs fulfilled their purpose and ceased, vanished away.

Let's not limit God by saying that no one can be given the gift of tongues in these days.

As for those who are claiming that tongues are a necessary sign of the Spirit: no

If your pastor is pushing for all to speak in tongues, then he is in error according to Paul in his letter to the Corinthian church.
Tongues are a useful gift, and a tool for evangelism, but are not a common gift to all believers: "to some the gift of tongues, to others prophesy, to others teaching, etc..."

What utter ****!

It is a pity you despise your Heavenly Father's good gifts and desire to walk in unbelief! You (and some others on this forum) certainly fulfill 2Tim 3v5

Acts 2v16-21 shows conclusively that the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit (including the gift of tongues) are available throughout the whole of the age of Grace, right up until the 2nd Coming of Christ. Acts 2v38,39, 1Cor 12v7-11.

30 years ago, I asked the Lord Jesus for the Holy Spirit and He gave me the Holy Spirit, with the evidence of speaking in tongues, JUST LIKE ON THE DAY OF PENTECOST! The Scriptures tell me that my Heavenly Father only gives the Holy Spirit and good gifts to His dearly beloved children who ask Him for such and that is what I got, JUST LIKE THE SCRIPTURES DESCRIBES! Matt 7v7-11, Acts 2v4, Luke 11v9-13.

Hopefully that is blunt enough for you!

Some Christians speak in tongues, some don't. I'm a Christian and I don't speak in tongues but I have other God-given gifts. To be clear: Speaking in tongues isn't necessary for salvation. People add requirements that just can't be backed up by God's Word.

No. Speaking in tongues is just ONE of the Holy Spirit's gifts. It's not necessary for salvation.

Speaking in tongues is just ONE of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Please stop twisting God's Word to say it's necessary for salvation. It's not.

John 3:16 doesn't read:

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him, having the gift of tongues, may not perish but may have eternal life.

The bible says that we are not to forbid someone to speak in tongues, but it also says that there has to be an interpreter. And everything should be done with order. I would also be wary of someone using this to introduce new scripture. I have never heard anyone speak in tongues and as I understand it, it was primarily used to speak to people of another language as we see in Acts 2.

And Paul very clearly says that not all spoke in tongues, even in the first century church.

1 Corinthians 12:30 All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?

In context:
[SUP]27 [/SUP]Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it. [SUP]28 [/SUP]And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues. [SUP]29 [/SUP]All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of[SUP] [/SUP]miracles, are they? [SUP]30 [/SUP]All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they? [SUP]31 [/SUP]But earnestly desire the greater gifts.
And I show you a still more excellent way.

I've heard people speaking in tongues to edify the Body of Christ. It sounds like Hebrew to me.

Someone did interpret though?
Yes, someone did interpret (biblical) most of the time but there have been times someone speaking in tongues has interpreted their own words (not so wise). It really needs to be practiced with discernment and accountability from others (and the Holy Spirit).

I would love too hear someone speak in tongues and believe that it is was from God. I pray that if I ever witness it really being done that I will not be skeptical. I fear that I would think they were faking.

This is kind of a different subject, but I feel that I should share: I have a friend who is bilingual and he thinks that means he can speak in tongues. He is a very good friend, but he doesn't understand the concept.
