Christ came to earth as a love offering of God. Jesus Christ was God wrapped in human flesh coming to pay the full satisfaction of our sin debt. Every wrong we’ve committed. Every small or large sin separates us from God and we are behind that veil of sin. On Good Friday some 2,000 years ago Jesus Christ – the judge of the world – stepped down from His heavenly bench, took off His heavenly judge’s robe and allowed Himself to be nailed to a cross to pay the price of our sins. When He did this He gave us a new way of access to God, if we accept his gift. The tearing of the veil brings a few lessons to mind…
It was torn from top to bottom – This was an act of God – not of man. God made the step of sending Christ for us. God opens our hearts to allow us to accept (or reject if we so choose) Christ. When Christ’s redeeming work was complete on the cross, the veil in the temple was no longer necessary. We didn’t need to go through a High Priest and religious ritual to get to God. Not because we changed, not because we were any better.. But because God Himself bore the weight of our sin and opened that path in the person of Jesus Christ.
Significance for believers today – We should look to the veil that was once separating the temple as a reminder of the separation our sin creates from God. We should remember how we were when we were dead in our sins and what life is like now. It is also important to remember that the veil was torn from top to bottom.. God didn’t just cause the veil to be torn, God also paid for our sins. Our salvation is nothing we could earn (even if we wanted to!), we didn’t make the first move – God did. This should help us to remember to love others with the love we are called to, it should help us to stay grounded – we aren’t any better than anyone – we are sinners who happen to have accepted the grace of God.

Matthew 27:50-51

[SUP]50 [/SUP]And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
[SUP]51 [/SUP]Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split,

Only the high priest was allowed into the holy place to may atonement for sin. The veil was torn that we can come into the very presence of God and we are told to come boldly.

For the cause of Christ

To understand why that veil was torn ,first one should know why the veil was there in the first place .
The veil impeded worshipper to enter into the holy of holies where in is the presence of God ,where only the high priest would enter once in a year and not without blood and a chain was tied on him ,that peradventure he dies there none would enter there but they would draw him out with the chain tied on him .
So the veil was torn ,so that all may go into the presence of God ,that was made possible when the blood of Jesus being crucified dropped on the ground ,that is when his blood was shed ,so that all may go into the presence of God by a new and living way that is through the blood of Jesus .So every one can enter into his presence as impediment -the veil has been torn .

Hebrews 10:19-22 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

And having an high priest over the house of God;

Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

Good OP, in addition wanted to add that I have come to think of it also as Almighty rending His garment in agony over His only Son. What a price He paid to redeem us! It helps me remember how serious sin is.

I searched all through the OT to see what it said about what happened when the saints died, and I couldn't find anywhere that it talked of death as it does after Christ was crucified. It usually speaks of being asleep. But as soon as Christ gave up His spirit and the curtain was split, there was a change in those who had passed away before.

Mart. 27:51-53 Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary was split in two from top to bottom; the earth quaked and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs were also opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. 53 And they came out of the tombs after His resurrection, entered the holy city, and appeared to many.

It is showing us that through Christ we live. I shows us that even the shadow of the blood of Christ was powerful, it was used for atonement. It shows us how true all the OT scriptures were that told of Christ, and explains all the NT scriptures saying what Christ did for us made it better.

This actually has numerous applications as in.....

1. The holiest of holies is opened unto all men as we can all go to God through Christ now.
2. The division between Jews and Gentiles has been removed and the twain are brought together under one banner of faith, that being the faith of Abraham and no there is neither Jew nor Gentile as we are one in Christ.

i would like to add one more observation...

the curtain was -torn- by God...it wasn't carefully removed and folded up and put away or anything like that...it was torn...

tearing something is a sign of great offense...now that jesus' sacrifice has removed the separation between us and God...God is -offended- by any attempt at continuing that separation...

The tearing of the veil also was a sign of desecration. With the Temple and the Holy of Holies desecrated, it shows it is no longer the dwelling place of God.

let me reiterate Heb 10:20...a new and living way. Think about it.

By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;
(Heb 10:20)

In Christ, all the mysteries of God are revealed. It is to Him that we look to understand what God is like.

Lot of Good comments and I would like to add another (not the only) reason the veil was torn. It revealed to the public that the Ark of the Covenant was not there. Tradition say's that they had some special stone in it's place. I don't know but the Ark of the Covenant was lost long before this event.
