in acts (17;28-29) Paul quotes the Greek poet Aratus Aratus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ,,,why do you think Paul was quoting the fifth line and what do you think he meant?,,,i am interested on your opinions on the matter so i will not set mine forth at first(curious if you will come to the same conclusion),,,so for now i would rather hold mine own back,,,thanks in advance for responding,,,,,,,

"Let us begin with Zeus,whom we mortals never leave unspoken.
For every street,every market-place is full of Zeus.
Even the sea and the harbour(sic.) are full of his deity.
Everywhere everyone is indebted to Zeus.
for we are indeed his offspring.",,,,,,,,

It was a device to get their attention - all the peoples of the earth according to Genesis sprang from Adam:

(Luke 3:38 KJV) Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.

Adam was the son of God and we are all Adam's offspring.

Another related scripture:

(Acts 17:26 KJV) And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

He also quotes another Greek philosopher here:

The apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:33 quotes Menander in the text "Bad company corrupts good character" who probably derived this from Euripides (Socrates, Ecclesiastical History, 3.16).

In either case I never fully felt like I understood why, so i am interested to see this discussion.

yes i think paul was one who felt as tho he should teach from the "first sign of the cork sending out ripples",,he said (1 cor. 9;19-23),,that he became "the law" to those under the law,,,and to those who were not,,,(?),,,,as it seems he felt very comfortable with their poets and their customs(he speaking of them/quotes),,,them often. peter tho warns us that he also is speaking of things "hard to be understood",,,(2peter,3;16),,,so it seems peter understood Paul was reaching into things they(the gentiles),did see,,,to present the Gospel,,,,,,,"but that it could be misunderstood if one was not careful",,,,,

As most of you know, Paul was an intellect and very highly educated and Paul went to Athens and attempted to debate them intellectually and there is no record of a church being planted there. After this Athens event, that's when Paul stated " I have determined to know nothing accept Christ and Him crucified" and then later "that the preaching of the Gospel is the power of God"

yes i think the reactions of the gentiles are the key to this,,,(in acts,14;12),,,,Barnabas is thought to be "Jupiter"(the father/head),,,and paul "mercurius/his son",,,based upon the miracles they saw,,,,so from the root it seems they knew to approach them based on what they understood,,,,,,,,,i will take time now to let others respond,i will return tonight or tomorrow,,,god bless you all,,,
