'And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues...' - Mark 16 vs 17 *

This is a very profound statement the Lord made to His disciples, which gives us a rigid principle for supernatural manifestation in our generation. He said to them that certain signs, miraculous signs will of a necessity and normality follow anyone that believes in Him, and those signs are given expressly above. *

Brothers and Sisters, what are we waiting for? This is time to take advantage of the precious words of the Lord Jesus in faith and see the miraculous works manifested everywhere and in every place, and all that is needed to act on the words of the Lord Jesus is FAITH (Certainty, Surety). I will show that to you in the Bible from the story of Peter walking on the water; *

Matthew *14:28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. *14:29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. {KJV} *

From the above passage, we could see Peter taking advantage of the precious word of Jesus which was COME. Peter acted upon that word in faith, and the Bible records that he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But something terrible happened in verse 30, he doubted, and began to sink. Now, I want you to notice what Jesus said to him; *

Matthew *14:31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? {KJV} *

Notice the underlined word(s), 'O thou of little faith', and*'wherefore didst thou doubt?' This tells us that Peter's sinking was directly connected to his lack of faith or rather lack of sustained faith on the word of Jesus. *

Listen to this, let's not try to improve on the word of God, but let's simply step out in faith and do his word, and the result(s) will be inevitable. Just like Peter, let us believe the word of the Master, and act on it without wavery or doubtings, lest we sink (lack the expected result). *

God Bless You.

The authenticity of the long ending of Mark is questionable. Would you also recommend that they take up deadly serpents and drink deadly poisons? God is not to be tempted by such foolishness.

Preach the gospel of Christ and see souls saved and saints strengthened. Avoid foolish babblings that gender only strife and contention. Be faithful of you calling to minister to the lost sheep that have no shepherd.

AMEN.
I have seen and done signs, healings and miracles ever since I got saved in 1975, It was the healing of my mother that got me to a Church.
She looked a very healthy, a lot younger and happier, So I was a bit concerned as to what she was getting into, So I went with her to find out, And after three weeks I got saved.

We also see in Mk 16: 20, That God confirms His word, [Whoever preaches, teaches or witnesses about it].
He confirms it with signs following.
Paul said he had fully preached the gospel with mighty signs and wonders by the power of the Spirit of God. Rom 15: 19.

The earliest transcripts of Mk 16, Had the ending in it, Plus it goes along with God's will for His people to preach with signs following... We see it throughout the book of Acts.

The issue I raise is this: to whom does the plural pronouns "they" and "them" in verses 17-20 refer?

--Grammatically I do not see the plural pronouns 'they' and 'them" refer to a singular 'he' of verse 16

--the nearest plural antecedent of 'they' and 'them' is "the eleven" of verse 14

--verse 20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. Verse 20 makes it clear to me that the pronouns 'they' and 'them" are referring to the apostles.

--I conclude that the evidence shows those signs was promised to the apostles and not promised to anyone today.

Well said about Jesus addressing the apostles-- the Eleven. However, you added this: "I conclude that the evidence shows those signs was promised to the apostles and not promised to anyone today."The apparent problem with that is that you said Jesus was speaking to the Eleven in that passage (which He was)... but the things He said they would do, only Paul (who was not a part of the Eleven) is recorded as doing most of them-- even to being bitten by a snake and not being harmed. The first part of what you said is right on: Jesus was speaking to the Eleven particularly at that time; but the last part of what you said is askew: other people, including people like Stephen and Philip who were not apostles, are recorded doing "these signs" that would follow "those who believe". My own recommendation is that to understand what Jesus was fully saying (not just the 'in part' but the whole) is to check out the Greek wording and meaning of that particular passage beginning a verse before and ending a verse after. Particularly the word 'believe' needs to be scrutinized, because it is used in so many contexts and different ways in just the NT that it really necessitates research when there seems to be incongruence or inconsistency: e.g. if Jesus says, "Everyone who follows Me will walk on water" and we know only a handful of Christians who've actually done it and a bunch of Hindu 'shamans' who've also done it, we must necessarily return to the Bible and see what Jesus meant, paying greater attention to words like 'everyone' and 'follows <Me>'. I say all this because while Jesus was talking specifically to the Eleven apostles, we see other apostles and ministers who weren't apostles doing what He said that the Eleven would do. The question then would be: who does [what Jesus said] really apply to?

To the Greeks Koine was a language known and used by most travelers such as sailors or merchants. The Greeks used the word "tongue" to identify languages or minor dialects other than Greek. A tongue means a language always known by someone. Paul was an apostle and said that he spoke more of the tongues or languages than all of the rest. However, he said IN CHURCH tongues would have no value. A visitor speaking a Greek dialect would think in their own language. However, unless they or others could translated their message they are commanded to be silent. The assembly was for teaching the word or logos.

Mark 16:14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

Peter "went fishing" and the others were not true believers until the day of Pentecost.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Jesus could have said that those who believe and are baptized shall be saved and they shall speak with new tongues. He has stated that the unbelievers are the eleven. The signs FOLLOWED along but do not appear ever to have been performed by new disciples (learners)

Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
Mark 16:18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Mark 16:19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

As noted, the eleven went forth as Jesus had sent them into all the world and He confirmed the word or logos with supernatural signs. Signs and wonders were to certify the evangelists.

Mark 16:20 And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

Jesus promised to guide the apostles into all truth and after Pentecost they were certainly "believers."

Acts 5:12 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch.
Acts 8:18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

Jesus appeared to and let Paul hear His voice to qualify him as an apostle: He promised to appear to Paul to guide him. Paul demonstrated these powers conferred by the direct appearance of Jesus.

Not everyone has the gift of faith. To those with the gift of faith, nothing at all is impossible, and they tend to believe when no one else is capable of even pretending to believe:

1. In the room of the twelve year old girl who was dead, Jesus had with Him three disciples who were able to believe. He raised the girl from the dead. (Mark 5.)

2. At Lazarus' tomb, Martha (who was presumptuous like Peter) thought she believed (pretended to believe) until Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again" to which she replied, "I know that he will rise again at the resurrection at the last Day." She had begun by saying, "If You had been here, my brother would not have died; but even now, I know that God will give You whatever you ask." That can mean nothing but, "My brother died because You weren't here; but I know You can raise him from the dead." Her faith proved false when Jesus 'agreed' with her by saying, "Your brother will rise again... I am the Resurrection and the Life." Before He raised Lazarus, He prayed and said, "I thank You, Father, that You have heard Me." And Lazarus rose. The gift of faith knows past tense that God is more than able... but not everyone has that gift. (Jn. 11.)

3. Coming into a town called Nain, Jesus saw a funeral procession-- a dead man with his mom weeping. When Jesus saw her and knew she was a widow, He told her not to weep, touched the coffin, and told the man to come back to life which he immediately did. No one pretended to believe anything; only Jesus was able to make it happen. (Luke 7.)

Everyone should follow the Lord's example, but not everyone has gifts of faith or miracles, etc. We should always be aware that what is easy for one may be hard for another and vice versa; we don't all have the same gifts which means it takes more 'effort' for a person without faith or miracles as a gift to 'summon faith' or do miracles than it would a person who has those gifts. So, not everyone who steps out in faith will do miracles or healings and such. However, those who have those gifts (or any gifts), especially if in leadership, are able to impart those gifts to others. You can't give what you don't have; you need to get it first. Moreover, there are also seasons, and sometimes the gifts (or certain gifts) in a person will be restrained so that they can't use it till a particular time. It's good to be aware of all these.

Not only were the apostles casting out demons but people who were not directly following Jesus around.

Luke 9:49John answered and said, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow along with us." 50But Jesus said to him, "Do not hinder him; for he who is not against you is for you.

I understand it is difficult for Christians who have been raised in a denomination that doesn't believe in miracles, casting out demons, and healings for today to believe. They have never seen it for themselves and they see the abuses of it on TV so they conclude that God doesn't do those things anymore. However, I wish they could only see that He does!

When you have laid hands on someone and seen demons flee and people healed, no one can tell you that the Scriptures "don't really mean what they say." I know they are true, because I have walked in them.

I pray that those who have never seen these things would still believe in them.

The signs were not given to confirm the Gospel in the way that the Gospel needs to be confirmed. A better way to put it is that the certain truths of the Gospel would trigger the signs. For instance, the sorcerers in Moses' time, in other sections of the OT, and in the NT (Simon in Samaria, etc.) were able to do 'signs'; but those signs, even though they matched God's own signs (the Egyptian sorcerers), didn't confirm them being sent from God. In Samaria, they called the sorcerer "the Great Power of God" (Acts 8:9-10). All caps means they were talking about the real God (remember, this was Samaria, right there with the Israelis, not some faraway Gentile nation that didn't know God): because of Simon's 'signs', they believed he was from God. Jesus said that many false prophets and people will perform signs and will deceive many in our last days; that's because we think that signs or miracles confirm that a person is from God (if they say they are from God and show signs). What Jesus really means by signs confirming is that the signs literally 'follow'; it really means that the correct application of truth triggers signs, some signs (e.g. miracles) more apparent than others (e.g. heart conviction or a sense of coming judgement). It's like people say: "God inhabits the praises of His people." God inhabits or ratifies truth, but signs and miracles don't mean God is behind them. Signs come behind truth every time (usually, they are not apparent or seen); but not all signs follow truth as some come from the enemy, etc.

Moses vs. the Egyptian sorcerers is probably a very good example in that God confirmed Moses' truth through signs but the Egyptians replicated the signs (the first several) but their signs, the very same as Moses', did not come from God. An example of the meaning of 'confirmation through signs' follows as a true story: I was sitting in a Wednesday Bible study in summer '06. A certain guy who was known for not taking the things of God seriously drew the Bible study leader (who was too timid to resist) away from the topic of God as was his custom. This happened several times until one Wednesday when one guy finally had it and rebuked the disrupting guy. I thought the rebuke should have been way harsher than he made it; it was far too gentle in my opinion... but when he rebuked satan's interruptions through this guy, the Holy Spirit fell suddenly in the room as if someone took a giant size bottle of baby powder, took off its cap, removed the roof over that part of the house, and turned the baby powder upside down above that room: whoosh, everything dumped out at once and filled the room with powder smoke. (There was no smoke that I could see.) The Holy Spirit filled that room immediately, and angels came down to enforce 'the fear of the Lord' (reverence for God). We all sat for what seemed like fifteen minutes (maybe just five), looking down at our hands and feet, unable to speak and afraid to. When a brave soul finally spoke up and brought the meeting back to order, the interrupting guy was miraculously cured of his 'satan-wants-me-to-interrupt-this-fellowship syndrome'; he never did it again from that day on, and we all grew in our knowledge of 'the fear of the Lord'. That was a sign that followed the truth spoken as a rebuke: the truth 'triggered' the sign; it wasn't just God saying, "I'm confirming MY Word", otherwise, churches would be filled with signs on Sundays. Acts records that Jesus conferred 'these powers' not only on Paul but also Barnabas (as well as other unnamed apostles besides the Twelve to whom Jesus appeared before He appeared to Paul). There are in the Book of Acts simple Christians who were chosen to simply serve food (basically) to Grecian Jews but who end up walking in 'signs and miracles' (and healings and casting out demons, etc.): two of them are recorded for us as Stephen (through whom the Church's persecution was inaugurated according to God's will) and Philip (who went down to Samaria and turned a whole city to God). There are different types of signs that confirm different things; but miracles and healings and supernatural acts are not confined to Eleven or Twelve men or to a time period in history.

I agree. If Christians won't believe for truth's sake, it would be nice to believe for their sakes, to get off of them the enemy's tentacles, tendrils, and messengers that they can't see presently at work in their own lives.

I agree with that re: Jda016 and those who were casting demons out in Jesus' time who weren't even following Him.

Simiel, people need to start somewhere before running off to "do the stuff" (as much as I hate bringing that disgusting term back from the past). I.e. each person needs to learn what it is that God gave them before stepping out to 'participate'. Nobody sends another person on an assignment without giving them tools and telling them how to use them. I think there needs to be a beginning which provides stability for everything else that comes after.

The word ,"Them" in v 20 is italicised in the KJV, and that means it wasn't in the original Greek
So it reads like this.
"The Lord working with, and confirming the word with signs following".

God works with and confirms His word with signs following, No matter who is preaching it.

V17 says. Them that believe,
THEM means them that believe

I believe and God confirms His word that I preach, with signs following.

Jesus sent the seventy and gave them supernatural powers: however, because they were going to Jews He did not need to give them the gift of speaking different languages. A "tongue" is always defined as the language of different people. If you have the gift of speaking Arabic God wants you to give away your property and to to Iran.

In Mark the subject is those who believed AND were baptized in order to be saved or have the remission of sins. Pistis means I trust and I comply. The believeth-nots were "apistos" which will not comply with Jesus connection of baptism as the way to be "saved" by requesting a good conscience or a holy spirit from God. Apistos or believeth not means "I will not comply and it means to revolt."

Luke 10:1 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.
Luke 10:2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
Luke 10:3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.
Luke 10:4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.
Luke 10:5 And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.
Luke 10:6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
Luke 10:7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
Luke 10:8 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:
Luke 10:9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
Luke 10:10 But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,
Luke 10:11 Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

Jesus SENT His agents out to seek and save the lost spirits who are not OF THE WORLD. The example of Jesusl, his command and the example was a SENT person had to trust the believers to feed and house them. Otherwis, Paul said that you discredit the gospel as the free water of the world. Such dedicated people will be defended by Jesus. Those who GLADLY RECEIVED the Word were anxious to be baptized. Once, the 70 found the believers they did not set up shop but moved on to the next area. Jesus went out to preach and He taught in the synagogues by reading.

God can heal and answer prayer but if my daughter survives Ovarian Cancer I might hope that it is a miracle but not in the true case of a miracle as a SIGN AND WONDER of anything I have to offer.

The promise of those signs was made to the apostles, Paul later being made an apostles was also give these signs.
2 Cor 12:12, Paul refers to them as "signs of an apostle".
Acts 18:8 an apostle could lay hands upon another person and pass that person an apostolic sign, but that person could not pass that apostolic sign to anyone else.

Mk 16:11,13,14 - it was the apostles in this context that did not believe, so much so Jesus upbraided them for their unbelief. So these signs shall follow them (apostles) that believe. The interpretation some put upon Mk 16:17 requires ALL who believes would have these signs following, but even in the first century when they had signs, all that believed did NOT have signs, 1 Cor 12:29,30
