I have a sister who prays to God every night. She even knows the Lord's prayer. But she told me she not only doesn't believe in the risen Jesus, she does not even believe there was an historical Jesus.
Now please tell me how Jesus is going to hear the prayers of someone who doesn't believe in his existence? It is form and ritual. And she is far from oppressed, she is a rich woman, living the rich life. I think her main prayer is that my mother would die sooner, rather than later, so she could have even more money.
As for me, God did answer my prayer when I was a unbeliever. I asked him to reveal himself to me, if he was real, and he did in an amazing way! I believed, repented and was baptized as a result of that first encounter, and I have been following Christ for 34 years.
So I guess this comes back to the question of what are you praying for? If you are praying to know Christ, I believe he will answer your prayer. If you are praying for riches or other ungodly things, probably not.
