God is a spirit. We are the people. He is not.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you're trying to say.

I have been around. The original statement is something which could come out of the mouth of a Mormon.

Yes, God is spirit. But you have to remember that Jesus is also man. Even though He is in heaven with the Father, He still hasn't given up His human aspect. Since all three are one, meaning that what you see in one you recieve in all. Saying that God is a person insn't a misstatement, because He refers to Himself that way. We often refer to Him as the personage of God. It's hard to understand the sutlties sometimes. But He is a person just as you and I are. The confusion comes sometimes because His atributes are so much more than ours will ever be. When people point a finger they have to remember how many more are pointing back. So don't worry when names are called, having a christian spirit is hard to do all the time.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Gen 1:27 RSV

Actually, according to this Scripture, maybe God IS a person. Either way, I think he has feelings.

Welcome to the website, KingdomHeart. I hope you enjoy yourself here.

This sounds familiar:
4And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Man was created in God's own image so it safe to assume that God does feels emotion just not in same limited manner / capacity as man. God emotions are not tainted with sin, selfishness nor unrighteousness. Also God created all thus He sees and knows all from a perspective that man will never be able to comprehend on this side of eternity.

While God is indeed a spirit, I feel one can also safely say that God is a "person". Throughout scripture we can find many characteristics of God's "personality" all of which can be fully seen through the person which was Christ and the way He lived, loved, preached and died. By humbling Himself, taking on the form of a man and living among us , God took away any potential excuse or finger pointing man could use against God to say that God somehow doesn't understand what it means to be human.

I think this is what must be clarified.

We know at least 3 things regarding what God is, and what we will become.

John 4:24

... God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."

Genesis 1:26

... Let us make man in our image, in our likeness,

1 John 3:2

... what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

These are three good things. I thought you would say: God is spirit, God is love, God is light.

That would be good to add as well. I always try to determine what the original post is really trying to say, and these scriptures help to support, not necessarily that God is a 'man' as we understand the term, but that he has a form, and we were created in the likeness of that form. (I reject any Mormon doctrine which may remotely overlap with anything in this post).

I am not one given to the idea that when we get to heaven we will all simply become balls of light, floating around in His presence. I am more inclined to believe that people will appear much the way they were when they were on earth, but perhaps in a more perfect version of themselves. This reasoning is not totally without merit.

On the mount of transfiguration, the disciples saw spirits, but they appeared as 'people', not as unidentifiable forms. The disciples who witnessed this event, identified 2 people who had died many years prior, (Moses and Elijah).

Matthew 17:3 ... Just then there appeared before them, Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.

This would allow us to conclude that as these were recognized, though they had died, we will also recognize each other. This also tells us that a spirit has a form. God is a spirit, according to the word, as well as Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, but we were created in their likeness. I believe that the original post speaks something that is well supported in the bible. If we are' people' on earth we will more than likely be 'people' in heaven, and if made in the likeness of our creators, God could very well be considered a person, 'not human', but nevertheless, a person.

This only applies, because the original post did not say 'human'. We know that God is not human, and that we will not be human when we enter Heaven. Humans are clothed with flesh, and apart from Christs time on earth in a body of flesh, we know that flesh and blood does not enter heaven.

1 Corinthians 15:50

I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God,

The statement in the original post should cause us to ask ourselves, what is a person? Most secular definitions would have us to believe that our existence is tied to rights and legal recognition, but I don't believe this would be the most accurate definition.

A Person is ....

- one who exists, and is conscious of that existence. This is also one of the primary distinctions which separate man from the animal kingdom, as animals lack the capacity to contemplate their existence.

God, acknowledging his own existence, once identified himself as I AM , which is a phrase that could correctly be interpreted as ( I exist ).

Scripture also verifies that He was aware that there were no others like Him. This also denotes a 'concsiousness of being'. (being aware of his own existence).

Isaiah 46:9

I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.

I believe that their are more scriptures in support of the original post, than in opposition to it.

God is a being albeit spirit. He has intelligence and a will. As such the term person does fit somewhat. But he is not human although we are created in his image.

I think it's funny how so many avoid the idea that God does indeed feel emotion, seeing as man is so easily ruled and often times decieved by his or her own emotions.
