Thinking about the woman with the issue of blood that touched the hem of the garment of Jesus, I was wondering exactly how this should have played out under the Law?

Luke 8:43) And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, 44 .) Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched. 45 .) And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? 46 .) And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me. 47 .) And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. 48 .) And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.

Leviticus 15:19) And if a woman have an issue, and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until the even.
20 .) And every thing that she lieth upon in her separation shall be unclean: every thing also that she sitteth upon shall be unclean. 21 .) And whosoever toucheth her bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. 22 .) And whosoever toucheth any thing that she sat upon shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. 23 .) And if it be on her bed, or on any thing whereon she sitteth, when he toucheth it, he shall be unclean until the even. 24 .) And if any man lie with her at all, and her flowers be upon him, he shall be unclean seven days; and all the bed whereon he lieth shall be unclean. 25 .) And if a woman have an issue of her blood many days out of the time of her separation, or if it run beyond the time of her separation; all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation: she shall be unclean. 26 .) Every bed whereon she lieth all the days of her issue shall be unto her as the bed of her separation: and whatsoever she sitteth upon shall be unclean, as the uncleanness of her separation.
27 .) And whosoever toucheth those things shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. 28 .) But if she be cleansed of her issue, then she shall number to herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean.
29 .) And on the eighth day she shall take unto her two turtles, or two young pigeons, and bring them unto the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
30 .) And the priest shall offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for her before the LORD for the issue of her uncleanness. 31 .) Thus shall ye separate the children of Israel from their uncleanness; that they die not in their uncleanness, when they defile my tabernacle that is among them.
32 .) This is the law of him that hath an issue, and of him whose seed goeth from him, and is defiled therewith; 33 .) And of her that is sick of her flowers, and of him that hath an issue, of the man, and of the woman, and of him that lieth with her that is unclean.

Ezekiel 18:5) But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right, 6 .) And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman,
7 .) And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment; 8 .) He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man,
9 .) Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.

Now here is an interesting topic that doesn't get brought up too much.

I would think by the true Law that it played out as it was suppose to play out. Since Jesus is the Christ then therefore his statement to the woman is most profound:

[SUP]48 [/SUP]And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.

Take this into consideration with the Mosaic Law of cleanliness. What is the punishment under the Mosaic Law if one transgresses? It is to atone and seek God by faith, and through faith in God for the unclean to be made clean and healed. So we can see by this woman's faith in Jesus she was made whole.

Why just Jesus...the whole crowd was pressing in, so many must have had contact with her.

I suppose the miracle overshadowed it all.

The hem of the Tallit represent the rays and in Malachi 4:2 it says that from his rays comes healing and so the woman remembered it and had faith that He is the One.

2 But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays.

Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Revelation 18:23 The light of a lamp will never shine in you again. The voice of bridegroom and bride will never be heard in you again. Your merchants were the world’s important people. By your magic spell all the nations were led astray.

Revelation 21:23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.

Genesis 15:17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces.

I have heard the correlation to Malachi 4:2 as well and it appears to make sense given the situation.

Malachi 4:2 “But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings; and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall."

The tzit-tzits, or fringes on the edges of a talit or garment are often referred to as "wings". So perhaps the woman knew of this passage from Malachi and had the faith to touch the "wings" in order to receive healing. That's why Jesus said that her faith healed her.

When we dissect everything in the bible to say "this means this complicated thing I make it mean" we run the risk of adding to scripture. It is true that everything God tells us has a spiritual meaning as well as literal. We are to learn that in our day to day living and what the bible tells us, we must relate it to spiritual reality. When this is carried to the extremes this post is carrying it to, it is going entirely too far, and it is bypassing the straight forward teachings of the literal.

Each month a woman sheds the old cells that could begin new life in the issue of blood, and a new beginning is then created in her for the possibility of new life. It is supernatural, a blessing, a wonder of the Lord. Spiritually, it is relating to the new life we have in Christ. We are shown Christ as Christ wasn't shown to the Hebrews before he actually lived as a man, so they were told to just act is "this" way about this happening to women each month, to just do it. There are things Christ tells us to "just do" today that we don't fully understand, also. It is best to just do what Christ says.

Christ wore tassels on the hem of His garment, and from this scripture we know they had spiritual meaning.

Numbers 37The LORD also spoke to Moses, saying, 38"Speak to the sons of Israel, and tell them that they shall make for themselves tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they shall put on the tassel of each corner a cord of blue. 39"It shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the LORD, so as to do them and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes,

I, personally, think this means is that when the "new covenant" Christians say that all tassels are part of only Judaism and Christ outlawed them, they are going too far and misunderstanding Judaism as Paul taught about it.

This is one of the commands and realizations that led me to start wearing the tassels. And you're right, it has led to a lot of spiritual struggle and insight into my relationship with God.

Well, at least TWO of you ACTUALLY addressed the question posed in the OP. Everyone else seems to be distracted with tassels and such...........sigh......Oh well........

A couple of the comments were well out into left field in my opinion, but everyone has a right to their opinion. :)

Oh fine, get hung up on the details!:p

There would have been a couple of different scenarios depending on the kind of "issue" she was having.

Scenario #1 - Regular menstrual period
Leviticus 15:19-24 - 19‘When a woman has a discharge, if her discharge in her body is blood, she shall continue in her menstrual impurity for seven days; and whoever touches her shall be unclean until evening.20‘Everything also on which she lies during her menstrual impurity shall be unclean, and everything on which she sits shall be unclean. 21‘Anyone who touches her bed shall wash his clothes and bathe in water and be unclean until evening. 22‘Whoever touches any thing on which she sits shall wash his clothes and bathe in water and be unclean until evening. 23‘Whether it be on the bed or on the thing on which she is sitting, when he touches it, he shall be unclean until evening. 24‘If a man actually lies with her so that her menstrual impurity is on him, he shall be unclean seven days, and every bed on which he lies shall be unclean."

What would have happened? She would be unclean until evening. It would have been a natural part of life and nothing to be concerned with. If someone came into direct content with it, they would be unclean for 7 days because this goes above and beyond what is a natural part of life.

But as Luke stated, this wasn't the issue.

Scenario #2 - More than the regular menstrual period.
Leviticus 15:25-30 - 25‘Now if a woman has a discharge of her blood many days, not at the period of her menstrual impurity, or if she has a discharge beyond that period, all the days of her impure discharge she shall continue as though in her menstrual impurity; she is unclean. 26‘Any bed on which she lies all the days of her discharge shall be to her like her bed at menstruation; and every thing on which she sits shall be unclean, like her uncleanness at that time. 27‘Likewise, whoever touches them shall be unclean and shall wash his clothes and bathe in water and be unclean until evening. 28‘When she becomes clean from her discharge, she shall count off for herself seven days; and afterward she will be clean. 29‘Then on the eighth day she shall take for herself two turtledoves or two young pigeons and bring them in to the priest, to the doorway of the tent of meeting. 30‘The priest shall offer the one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. So the priest shall make atonement on her behalf before the LORD because of her impure discharge.’

What would have happened? According to Leviticus, she would have been clean after 8 days, but apparently it didn't work because she had had this issue for 12 years. In Leviticus 13-14, there is a process of examining a leprous person over a period of several weeks until they are cleansed. Again, this woman had been dealing with her issue for a lot longer than that, so that wasn't helping either.

One reason why her faith was so great is because she most likely had to live outside the city and would rarely, if ever, come inside because she was unclean. She knew the sacrifices and examinations weren't doing anything, so she had faith that there was one who COULD bring her healing (hence Malachi 4:2) and came into the city anyway (among all of the people who she would have yelled "Unclean!" to in order to find Jesus.

Scriptural perspective:

Mark 5:24) And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.
25 .) And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,
26 .) And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
27 .) When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.
28 .) For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.
29 .) And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.
30 .) And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?
31 .) And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
32 .) And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.
33 .) But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
34 .) And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

Luke 8:42) For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him.
43 .) And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any,
44 .) Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched.

I certainly agree that this woman had great "faith" in Jesus. However, I seriously doubt that she "announced" her presence to the "throng/press." Or announced that she was "unclean." Nothing in Scripture to reveal that. Just the opposite actually, for in Luke's account, it wasn't until after she had touched the hem of His garment that she said why........vs. 47.

Now, back to the question in the OP: I was wondering exactly how this should have played out under the Law?

I think she did announce why she had touched Jesus to the whole crowd going by Mark 5:33 and Luke 8:47. Thus Jesus answer most profound in the following verses of each gospel respectively. Thus that is how it played out under the true Law, the woman's faith in Jesus made her whole.

Liked having the two accounts side by side, very useful!

Yes, she did announce why she touched Jesus, but ONLY AFTER THE FACT. See, I'm wondering this........how many people did this woman touch as she "pressed" her way through the "throng" of people to reach Jesus so she could touch the hem of His garment? Was this woman aware of the Law about her being unclean? If she touched other people, then it must needs be that they "touched" her. If she touched the hem of His garment, then it must needs be He "touched" her.

Not for nothing, but it's pretty clear that there is a "whole lotta unclean touching" going on here. So, back to the question in the OP...........

I was wondering exactly how this should have played out under the Law?

Actually, I think there is a good chance she could have done this because of the instruction of a similar scenario involving a leprous man.

Lev 13:45-46
45 “As for the leper who has the infection, his clothes shall be torn, and the hair of his head shall be uncovered, and he shall cover his mustache and cry, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’46 He shall remain unclean all the days during which he has the infection; he is unclean. He shall live alone; his dwelling shall be outside the camp."

A little bit different of a situation, but it is a possibility. Regardless, I think you're right. There probably was a "whole lotta unclean touching going on."

Now, back to the question in the OP: I was wondering exactly how this should have played out under the Law?
The end of Leviticus 15 instructs a woman who has been made clean from her bleeding to go to priests to be atoned for, but at this point, she had never been healed or cleansed. Leviticus 15 also says that anyone who touches her or her blood will also be made unclean, which would imply that Jesus would have been made unclean by her touching his garment. But no indication is given that He was. As far as what would have happened to her in OT times if the bleeding persisted past the 8 days, Scripture doesn't say. But with Jesus, He said that her faith had healed her, which implies the bleeding stopped.

So, what you are saying is.......this woman was shouting to the "throng" UNCLEAN, UNCLEAN as she "pressed" through them so that they would move out of her way and not come into contact with her...............and they all heard her..........BUT JESUS AND THE DISCIPLES did not? They were not even aware of her presence................UNTIL........Jesus felt virtue go out of Him, and He turned amid the "press" to ask WHO it was that touched Him.

Seems unlikely that the disciples and Jesus would not have heard, been aware of this woman if what you believe is "likely."

But, now, that may just be me......... :)

and, again, according to the Law.......:

1) Was she unclean?
2) If she touched anyone, did they become unclean?
3) Are there not specific steps one must take in this instance according to the Law?

And: Leviticus 15 also says that anyone who touches her or her blood will also be made unclean, which would imply that Jesus would have been made unclean by her touching his garment. But no indication is given that He was.

4) Why not? Was it not the Law?

I said it probable, not definitive though. The problem is is that there isn't a lot of context in this particular passage, so there has to be some speculation on everybody's part.

1) Was she unclean?
Yes.
2) If she touched anyone, did they become unclean?
Yes.

There are specific instructions for a woman who was bleeding longer than her normal cycle, but I don't believe there were instructions for someone who was bleeding for a long period of time. A woman who was healed would go to the priests to be atoned for. Perhaps the unhealed ones remained outside the camp where the unclean lepers, etc. were?

And: Leviticus 15 also says that anyone who touches her or her blood will also be made unclean, which would imply that Jesus would have been made unclean by her touching his garment. But no indication is given that He was.

According to the Law, He would have been unclean. My point was the Scripture doesn't talk about the aftermath of the situation. And since Jesus was sinless and pure, I would imagine he wasn't unclean. But again, we don't know for sure.
