Heb 12:1 'Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.'

We are so caught up as believers that when we sin we have to repent and if we don't repent we think we have some kind of problem with our heart not being right before God. This is what happens, we tell God that we repent of the sin we committed and later we do it again. Then we live in guilt or condemnation and question whether we truly repented with the right motive, because someone told us that if we truly repented we would not do it again.

This verse in Heb 12 is speaking of a sin that besets us. A besetting sin is one that is always around and clings to us like a heavy coat that drags us down and hinders us from running the race. The scriptures are perfectly clear as to what we are to do about this clinging sin. We 'lay it aside' , which means we strip it off and take it off like we would a heavy coat. Laying aside that sin has nothing to do with repenting but just put it off or take it off and hang it up. Don't let that sin do what it is doing to you, don't let it have dominion and weigh you down. Don't put that coat back on because you are running a race.

There is no guilt when you lay it aside, no one has to counsel you about repenting the right way and get you involved in all these mental gymnastics of having the right motive. Many people have gone to a brother who has a besetting sin and they get all serious and tell them they have to repent or they will have to bring it before the church. That's not wisdom or even intelligent nor does it have anything to do with the grace of God. All they needed to say to their brother was, 'Hey this thing is weighing you down, making you unhappy, just get rid of it and put it away. Getting sin out of your life should be easy not difficult. Jesus said this in Mt 11:29,30...

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

He was saying put off the sin that besets you and put on My yoke and learn of Me. My yoke is easy and my burden is light. That sin won't give you rest because it is weighing you down, but you will find rest in Me when you put Me on.

Rom 13:14 'But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.'

Eph 4:24 ' And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.'

Col 3:10 'And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.'

Eph 4:22 'That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts.'

Col 3:8,9 ''But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds.'

Instead of repenting all the time, we simply put off the old man and the former conversation and put on Christ and the new man that is renewed and created in the righteousness of God. When we are tempted with sin through the lust of the flesh we put on Christ and that is how we walk in the Spirit, so that we will not fulfill the lust of the flesh / Gal 5:16. When you have a problem with sin, put it off and put on the Lord Jesus Christ for His yoke is easy and His burden is light and you will find rest for your soul. That's a promise from God and He can not lie Titus 1:2.

Some believers think that sin is so horrific that the only way it can be dealt with is through repentance. For some reason they think that putting off or laying aside their sin is not acceptable to God, not religious enough. If Christ has paid for our sin and put it away through the blood of the cross, why are we always wanting to repent of something God has put away? If He put sin away shouldn't we identify with what He has done? Those who believe that they have to repent all the time have a problem in their conscience with the blood of Christ.

They live with a conscience of quilt and have never had the blood of Christ cleanse their conscience experientially, so they always feel a need to repent every time they sin. Some have said right on this site that they repent daily and sometimes of the same sin over and over. The reason that they continually repent is because the blood has cleansed them positionally but not experientially. They are saved and covered by the blood of Christ, but they are not experiencing that blood and they can't go around and start claiming the blood when they have guilt in the conscience. If they do they feel like a hypocrite because they are not experiencing what they claim.

When the blood of Christ cleanses our conscience, the word of God must put a new norm and standard of righteousness in our conscience, that we can live by through grace. This new norm and standard teaches us through grace that Christ has put away all sin and His blood has cleansed us from those sins that have been put away. If we have the grace and knowledge of this new standard in our conscience, when we sin the Holy Spirit convicts us of the sin. The conviction is not confined to just doing something wrong through sin but we are also quickened to the truth of what Christ has done to that sin through His blood.

When we are quickened or made alive in our conscience with the truth, we experience being cleansed from sin and not the guilt associated with having sinned. Many believers stop at being convicted of sin and immediately feel a need to repent because of the guilt in their conscience. This is only a temporary relief from guilt until they sin again. If the believer follows through and let's the Holy Spirit quicken them by grace through the blood of Christ, they will acknowledge their sin without guilt and put it off as they put on Christ.

The believer gets victory over sin in the conscience by experiencing that victory through the blood of the cross. God wants us to experience the victory of His life instead of having to live in guilt and have to repeatedly repent of sin. Repentance will never gives us victory over sin, only what Christ has done to sin through His blood will give us experiential victory over sin and death. Put off sin and put on Christ.

..... let us lay aside every ..... sin ..... and ..... run ..... the race

this clearly means that if we sin we should wallow in grief and self pity for days, working up our emotions until we feel we have punished ourselves and received the punishment we feel we deserve and then finally psych our selves up to feel sincere and then go to God promising faithfully that we will never do it agian so that many days after we sin we finally seek God's forgiveness and the restoration of fellowship with him and we think we feel better

only after that fellowship is restored are we any godd to God - specifically, able to be used for His glory

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOr

We could just not think about feelings, accept the fact that Jesus was already punished for that sin; Rebound, accept forgiveness and move on; growing in the Christian life.

Shad you're confusing forgiveness with atonement I think. While Christ has died for every person ,not every person is forgiven because a) they have not believed, or b) they have not repented. Rather than presenting repentance as some sort of hindrence to a victorious life in Christ, which is basically what you have done, repentance is a necessary action on our part that allows us to receive from God. Repentance is an enjoyable and freeing thing to do. That regular and sincere repentance is necessary in the life of a true believer is best captured by the Lord's prayer which Christ taught His disciples to pray often "forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us". This necessary attitude of repentance is vital to right living with God and others.

yeah, I think Shad's use of the word repentance is unfortunate - but people do define it as some sort of self punishment - in fact it is not that at all

Yes absolutely. I even think a person can truly repent and still commit the same sin in the same day. I think the idea that to repent means you never do it again and if you do it again it means you haven't repented is a nice ideal but not true. To repent is to be sincere about wanting to change.

There is no confusion and I understand it perfectly. To live right before God and be rightly related to God is being rightly related to His Son through the blood of the cross. Repentance has nothing to do with sinners being rightly related to the Father or the Son. We are rightly related to the Son when we believe upon the work of the cross where Christ shed His blood for the remission of our sins. We are rightly related to the Father because that same blood that came through His Son was sprinkled upon the mercy seat in heaven and the Father accepts us on that basis only. I can only be rightly related to others through that blood.

Our communion with God and fellowship with those whom God has redeemed is through drinking that blood. We have no life without that blood. As 'imoss' has put it so beautifully, 'the blood of the lamb has washed me white as snow.' There is no holiness for the sinner without the blood of Christ.

You can keep on repenting when you sin, but I will acknowledge my sin through the cross and what Christ did to it through His own blood and go on by faith in the grace of God's cleansing and forgiveness. With that we can go on unto perfection and be free from sin, the effects of sin and the guilt of sin. That does not prevent us from sin but we know how to approach God when we do sin. This is what it means for Christ to become sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Remember this, 'God is making us become what He has already made us to be.'

1Cor 15:10 'But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

Heb 13:20,21 'Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21 Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.'

Again, you're confusing repentance and atonement me thinks. I don't like the way it appears you are belittling the importance or function of repentance in your posts. Other than that it all reads good. In short, repentance won't give victory over sin, yet God still commands us to repent, in a number of places. The reason being, victory over sin cannot be attained experientially until we first change the way we think (aka repent) towards it, God, and ourselves. To put off sin and to put on Christ is a nice way of saying "repent". Means the same thing really, in practice, it's not rocket science..

Actually, what you are talking about I think by "repentance" is the misunderstood and misapplied concept of it, not "true repentance" which is nothing like what churches make it out to be, the "repent or else" churches.. if I can use an overused cliche,. if I'm wrong please forgive my misunderstanding. So keeping in mind your post is talking about false repentance, your post deserves a big AMEN.

Neither one of you have commented on the following verses that were already posted as part of the whole counsel of God and the topic of this thread'

Here they are again.

Neither repentance nor any form of repentance is used in these verses especially in the following;

Heb 12:1 'Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.'

Are both of you going to ignore what these verses teach in relationship to sin, former lust and our manner of living (conversation)? Are you going to disagree as to what 'lay aside', 'put off' and 'put on' really mean in these verses? Are you going to interject 'repentance' in these verses to justify your understanding? Repentance is not taken out of context in these verses because it does not exist in the context. It is unfortunate that many put a false value upon repentance in relationship to sin. Repentance has no redemptive value and is as abstract and without understanding about the cross as the law is.

Repentance (change of mind) can stop a person from jumping off a bridge and killing themselves but it has no power to stop them from trying again or save them through the blood of Christ. Repentance can give you another opportunity to live but it can not give you life. You do not have to be a believer redeemed by the blood of Christ to receive some benefit of repentance. There are many that have repented from many things that have to do with sin and wrong decisions but never were cleansed by the blood of Christ. Many have repented and changed their mind about continuing in adultery and saved their marriage but not their soul. Repentance is when we change our mind about something but only grace through the blood of Christ can make us a new creature in Christ. We need only to believe to be saved, to be forgiven, to grow in grace and to live our life before God acceptably with love, joy and peace in our heart.

Shad, we 'put off' sin by changing our attitude and thoughts towards it. That's repentance, We "put on Christ" by changing our attitude and thoughts towards Christ. That's also repentance. Paul did not invent any new concepts or ideas that Jesus did not teach first e.g. "repent for the kingdom of heaven is near".. there is no "put on, put off" special doctrine that Christ taught, although such language helps us understand what to do. It all comes under the category of faith and repentance basically, and putting off and putting on, in practice is nothing fancy or more special than faith and repentance, trusting and obeying.

What these scriptures teach emphasizes the grace of God and the finished work of Christ. You do not want to acknowledge that God has provided grace and the cross of Christ to deal with man's sin and it has nothing to do with repentance. Believe yes, repentance no. If I sin, I believe what Christ did to that sin through His death and put on Christ. There is no need for any repentance and I don't lose my salvation either. When we put on Christ and put off the old man Adam, we are free to receive the grace of God. Repentance has nothing to do with the cross of Christ. John's baptism unto repentance had nothing to do with the cross.

When we lift up Christ and preach the cross, God draws men unto Himself / Jn 12:32. That drawing is what turns them to Christ but they still must believe to live and be saved. As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness so must the Son of man be lifted up, and whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have eternal life / John 3:14,15. God sent fiery serpents to bite those that had sinned and spoke against the LORD and rebelled against Moses. God told Moses to put a fiery serpent of brass and to lift it upon a pole and all those that simply 'looked' upon it shall live / Num 21:5-9. Just a look is all it took. When we sin we just look at Christ who was judged for our sin upon a tree (pole).

Is 45:22 'Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.'

When we turn to Christ and believe upon the one that was lifted upon a cross, we forsake everything that has to do with self by putting it off. Self includes the old sin nature, all the sins it produces, failures, likes and dislikes, natural preference, idolatry, short comings, religion and a religious conscience, pollutions of the mind and flesh, corruption, a deceitful heart, a sick head, good and evil imaginations, vanity and everything that is produced by Adam whether it be good or bad. These are all put off as we put on Christ. That's not repentance that is transformation because of regeneration and a new life through Christ and a n incorruptible seed.

As I have understood repentance is to admit we are sinners and only through Jesus do we find salvation and the grace to overcome sin.
Were not the final words of Jesus on the cross :Forgive them father for they know not what they do. ?
Even after acceptance we can do nothing without Jesus.
I have aways believed that it is more about humility to overcome sin before Jesus.

The Bible does say to 'put off' the ways of our old selves. Since we are a new creation, our old ways (sinfulness) has no control over us. I 'put off' and repent.

Since I am a Christian, my desires are different then they used to be so I 'put off' - try to stay away from anything that would tempt me to sin - my old ways. I try to 'put on' - focus on Christ through prayer and the Bible - the ways of Christ. However, if I do sin I ask for forgiveness and turn away from further doing that sin (until it pops up again and I might do the same sin, stupid me). I know that the repentance/asking for forgiveness does not save me because I am already saved but it is an outer reflection of what is happening in my heart - I am sorry that I sinned and that I hurt and disobeyed God.

There is nothing that you or anyone can do through repentance to get rid of sin. It can't be done and that is why Christ came to pay for sin and crucify the old sin nature in man. The only way that God has provided to rid us of sin is to reckon that all sin was put on Christ and crucified through death and by faith we are dead to sin through His death.

Rom 6:10-18
10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. Read also verses 19-23.

In these (9) verses we are instructed how to think of ourselves in relationship to what Christ did to sin, and how to deal with sin. We reckon ourselves to be dead indeed unto sin but alive unto God. This is how we are to reckon ourselves right in the midst of our sin. There is no repentance in reckoning ourselves dead to sin. We simply acknowledge our sin and say, I reckon myself dead to sin because you crucified my old sin nature and paid for my sin through your death.

Let's say I get discouraged and backslide into sin. Is repentance going to get me out of that situation? NO, a (1000) times NO! Many have tried to repent their way out of sin without success. They feel terrible about their sin and promise God they won't do it again, but they go right back into sin. Why? Because they tried to repent their way out of sin instead of reckoning themselves dead to sin and alive unto God through grace. Once you receive grace, that grace will teach you how to live godly and be servants of righteousness for Christ's sake / Eph 4:32.

There have been individuals that have come on this site asking us to pray for them and for advice because they are having a problem with homosexuality as well as other forms of sin. They have tried everything under the sun to rid themselves of this propensity of their old sin nature that desires to have inordinate affections toward the same sex. They have confessed Christ but this sin dominates their life. How are they going to overcome this and rid themselves of this unrighteousness? By going to seminars, by isolating themselves, by repenting again for the 100th time or by eating their favorite meal? NO, NO, NO! But by reckoning themselves dead to that sin that Christ paid for with His own blood through death. They need to put that sin off and put on the Lord Jesus Christ. They need to take upon His yoke and learn of Him / Mt 11:29.

This goes for any stronghold of sin that dominates a person's life. Repentance won't cut it, but faith in the cross and grace of God will do it. This is the truth that they need to be built up in. Grace will not compromise with their sin but grace will point to the cross and tell them to reckon themselves dead to that sin. If you can get a person to understand through the Holy Spirit and the word that they are dead to sin, the only place they can go from there is to reckon themselves alive unto God.

You don't have to get them to repent to get them there, just point them to the cross where it was all dealt with and where their sin was judged. They need to see that all their sin, including the one that is a stronghold in their life, was nailed to the cross. They no longer have to be identified with that stronghold of sin because they are dead to it. Repentance will always make you aware of your sin through guilt in your conscience but by reckoning yourself dead to sin through the cross, the blood of Christ will cleanse the conscience setting you free from sin and the dead works of sin.

Gal 2:20,21
20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

There are imaginations that establish these strongholds of sin that must be pulled down through doctrine, grace and obedience of faith. These imaginations have been lodged in the mind and heart for some time and acted upon in a measure for it to become a stronghold. Knowing it is wrong or sinful and trying to repent of these imaginations only reinforces and strengthens the sin / 1Cor 15:56, Rom 7:5. Obedience to the law only strengthens the propensity of sin / Rom 7:8-13. The purpose of the law was to make sin exceedingly sinful and the purpose of the cross was to justify us by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law / Gal 2:16.

We are under grace and not the law so that we can embrace the cross for righteousness and not the law. If we are under the law then we will feel the need to repent when we violate the law as a transgressor. But when we are under grace we are convicted of sin by the Holy Spirit and able to approach God's throne of grace, through the blood sacrifice of Christ, and receive mercy and grace to help in the time of our sin (need). Repentance will not do that for us but faith in the cross and blood of Christ will giving us access to that throne.

Yes that too. I don't know why people need to make things so difficult.

You do not want to acknowledge that God has provided grace and the cross of Christ to deal with man's sin and it has nothing to do with repentance.
If it has nothing to do with repentance then please tell me why Christ came saying "repent!..." and why repentance features throughout the new testament in the apostle's evangelism and preaching? First, understand what the word repentance means, secondly ,dont' make things so difficult. The Gospel is simple. "Repent and believe the good news." You have a problem with that? Your problem, not mine.
