Genesis 19

The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah

24Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; 25And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

Lot's Wife Looks Back

26But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
27And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD: 28And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

29And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.

The Jewish historian Josephus witness to have seen Her remains or salt pillar.

(22) But Lot's wife continually turning back to view the city as she went from it, and being too nicely inquisitive what would become of it, although God had forbidden her so to do, was changed into a pillar of salt; (23) for I have seen it, and it remains at this day.

The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is a picture of the fall of the congregations of the church age from the truth of the gospel. The day of the Lord doesn't come except there be a falling away first (2 Thes 2:3). Lot is a picture of the true believers who come out of the congregations that are fallen spiritually. Lot's wife is a picture of the judgement that falls upon those who look to return back to the fallen untruths of the congregations. The destruction is pictured as a physical event in the Old Testament scenario but it is pointing to a spiritual event for the church age congregations. Salt is parable language for judgement, and fire and so forth for judgement as well. It is a picture of the unsaved condition spiritually, rather than physical things when talking of the actual event being pointed to. Real physical fire, for example doesn't come out of the mouths of the witnesses in Rev 11:5 either. Rather, the words that they speak bring judgement for those who oppose them. Fire speaks of spiritual judgement. It is amazing to imagine that a woman may have been turned into an actual physical pillar of salt, but we should always remember what the event is really pointing to in the church age time frame, by parable language. Remember how Abraham interceded with God for Sodom and Gomorrah. If there were just a few righteous persons left there, God said he would spare the whole place for their sakes. Similarly, if there are just a few righteous persons left in the congregations of the church age, the congregations are to be spared. In the end, though, God sends his messengers to go and get the righteous out of there, for salvation is no longer there. The righteous flee elsewhere to be with the Lord.

Josephus probably had visit the site where it all had happened, and he had most likely retraced the steps according to the stories that were told to him about the path that Lot and his family had taken and saw a pillar of salt and which he stated that where it remain of this day, meaning that he has founded the pillar.

It's amazing what gets forgotten.

It can be convenient to forget. God know how many testimonies of "I don't remember.", "I don't know", and "I forget" have been given in human history when the truth was more like someone did remember, did know and didn't forget.

God has given amazing memories to human beings. I can remember events back to at least age 3-4 and I'm sure that most of you all can do the same.

God instituted the annual Passover observance so that the one-time events of the Israelite Exodus from Egypt under Moses would be remembered.

Jesus instituted the the regular observance of the Lord's Supper with its sharing of bread and wine so that the one-time events of Christ's suffering and crucifixion would be remembered. Jesus said: Do this in remembrance of Me.

Jesus Christ also issued this imperative: Remember Lot's wife. - Luke 17:32.

My informed speculation is that the pillar of salt may have actually been a pillar of the hot sulphuric brimstone that was then falling from the sky.

Jesus Christ used salt as an illustration for Christian people having a influence. Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount: You are the salt of the earth...(Matthew 5:13). The purposes of salt are to flavor and to preserve. Christians do well to bring the aroma of Christ to the world around them. Christians do well to seek actively to prevent the spread of corruption.

Remember how Abraham interceded with God for Sodom and Gomorrah. If there were just a few righteous persons left there, God said he would spare the whole place for their sakes.

You may want to do good and remain in place somewhere.

I think you're over-spiritualizing an actual historical event. After all, the events taking place in Genesis are history, not parables.

There is more than one type of salt. Not all is sodium chloride. There is also a potassium chloride salt. There is more than one ingredient in mineral salts.

As the hot sulphur, brimstone salts were falling on the city, it is not unlikely that some of that sulphur salt fell on Lot's wife.

like all scripture, the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah is more relevant today
because the glass of iniquity only will need a few more drops before it
is full and Judgment comes.

evil event upon evil event over the whole world is changing the
whole structure of 'global authority' - "Kingdoms rise & Kingdoms fall."

the general population of America is so consumed with the ubiquitous
diversions of (entertainment-sports-technology-un-natural obsession
with perverse, sexual behavior, etc.......).
we must ask ourselves, 'where do these roads lead, whether in an
historical or prophetic back-drop???

JUDE 1:7.
Even as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities about them in like manner
giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh
are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

unfortunately this kind of report is not all that reliable...ancient historians are known for frequent wild guessing and sometimes even blatantly making stuff up...josephus may have simply seen a chunk of salt and assumed without any additional evidence that it had once been lot's wife...

Ancient historians were pretty reliable most of the time, but yes, they sometimes included some superstitious stories.
