What does it mean to say salvation is not of yourself, but is of God?
What is God communicating through verses like below?

Ephesians 2
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love that He had for us,[c]5 made us alive with the Messiah even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace! 6 Together with Christ Jesus He also raised us up and seated us in the heavens, 7 so that in the coming ages He might display the immeasurable riches of His grace through His kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift9 not from works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are His creation, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time so that we should walk in them.
John 1
12 But to all who did receive Him,
He gave them the right to be[h] children of God,
to those who believe in His name,
13 who were born,
not of blood,[i]
or of the will of the flesh,
or of the will of man,[j]
but of God.

Revelation 5:9

And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

Revelation 5:12
And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.

I can rejoice knowing that it is not of my own works or my own accord that I have been saved. That I can rest in His grace, knowing that He has overcome it all. :)

2 Corinthians 5:21 God made Jesus who knew no sin to be sin for us that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.

Jesus said it is finished. Jesus did not say I am finished. All that ever could be required was provided by Jesus.

Salvation by grace is a gift that cannot be earned. Cannot be deserved and no man is worthy to receive it.

God's love, God's mercy and God's grace how can man comprehend it?

Romans 3:9-12 (NASB)
[SUP]9 [/SUP] What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin;
[SUP]10 [/SUP] as it is written, "THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE;
[SUP]11 [/SUP] THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD;
[SUP]12 [/SUP] ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE."
How can we seek for our Salvation if no one seeks for God?

Its God who comes looking for us! As for me i am VERY happy that God came looking for me because by myself i would never look for God!

I know many people who try to find God and Salvation by their own works.

Ephesians 2
Salvation only can come from God; for an instance, if a certain man is planning on rescuing a family that are lost in the wilderness so that he can be their salvation, but on his way, he had tripped and had broken his ankle. But God had send a blood hound to rescue them, but on their way to the rescue shelter, they had spotted the man with the broken ankle and helped carrying him to the rescue station, and which the lost people has became the man's salvation; and so it is all about whom God decide on whom be rescuer or not.

You cannot save yourself by yourself.

God saves. So the question is who receives the gift and salvation and who does not and why?

In answering the above question one must consider "salvation is not of yourself" but also consider "Save yourselves from this untoward generation." Acts 2:40; "in doing this thou shalt both save thyself" 1 Tim 4:16; "work out your own salvation" Phil 2:12; "Seeing ye have purified your souls" 1 Pet 1:22; "let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit" 2 Cor 7:1; "Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts" James 4:8

My question above should read "God saves. So the question is who receives the gift of salvation and who does not and why?"

It means that it is a gift, like the life we are living now. No one had a decision on whether to be here.

You cannot save yourself by yourself.
You cannot save yourself, no matter what.

You have absolutely nothing to do with it, any more than you had anything to do with your natural birth.

Hi, Roger. :)

I know this may seem nit-picky, but those words are not in the text.
v. 15 says "whoever believes will (or may) in Him have eternal life."
v. 16 says, "that whoever believes in Him"

nothing about the human will there.

all the, er credit...all the glory goes to God.

it's all of God, all of grace.
Jesus didn't come 99.9% of the way, and the rest is up to us,
thank God.

Man obviously has a role in his own salvation therefore can save himself by fulfilling the role God has given him.

God alone saves, but Christians can be one of the instruments God uses
to bring about the salvation of others.

Salvation is a one-time event (salvation past),
a process (salvation present) of being made more conformed to Christ's image, and
a completion (salvation future) at the resurrection of our glorified bodies.

You presented 6 verses and people still say that one has no part in their salvation?

I wonder, do people really have itchy ears?

God saves. So the question is who receives the gift and salvation and who does not and why?
The parable of the publican & the pharisee suggests that one why-not is self-righteousness. It requires abandoning pride in one's own works to trust the Lord Jesus for salvation. He is the Savior. Man is the saved, if he trusts the Lord Jesus for it.

Thou shalt call His name Jesus,
for He shall save His people from their sins.

In answering the above question one must consider "salvation is not of yourself" but also consider "Save yourselves from this untoward generation." Acts 2:40;

Verses must be taken in context and also with the realization that "save" has a range of meanings. In considering salvation, the two basic things we refer to are the new birth & eternal life. The believer is begotten by God (not something a baby can do for himself); and told he shall not perish, but have everlasting life -- the free gift of God is eternal life.

As a manner of speaking, when one trusts Christ as Savior, one saves oneself, in a manner of speaking, one does what is asked of man for salvation. Of course no man goes onto the cross and gets nailed while the Lord lays on that man the iniquities of us all.

"in doing this thou shalt both save thyself" 1 Tim 4:16;

The word of God is instrumental in salvation. And there is a current present tense salvation from sin in which scripture is instrumental: In His law he meditates day & night. Timothy did not need a new birth nor the gift of eternal life, which he already had.

"work out your own salvation" Phil 2:12; should not be quoted out of context -- for it is God who works in you both to will & to do!
Salvation result in works; works don't bring salvation.

[/quote]
"Seeing ye have purified your souls" 1 Pet 1:22; "let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit" 2 Cor 7:1; "Cleanse
your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts" James 4:8[/QUOTE]

None of the above have a thing to do with either securing a new birth, a transformation in which old things pass away & all becomes new -- nor does it have a thing to do with receiving eternal life. The blood of the Lord Jesus cleanses the believer from all sin; the believer doesn't use his own blood.
