John Oakes, PhD
Why did Jesus get baptized?

Lately, and after listening to several discussions in CC regarding "baptism" I began to ask my self….. Why did Jesus get baptized? I did some research and came across this paper by Dr. John Oakes…. See below. Of all the material I have read, this paper, for me, provides the most succinct explanation of why Jesus was baptized.

Some information about John Oakes.

John Oakes is a Christian apologist {and a completed Jew} and a professor of chemistry at Grossmont College. He belongs to the Restoration Movement of the Christian tradition.

John Oakes earned his PhD in chemical physics from the University of Colorado in 1984. During his years at graduate school, he converted to Christianity and eventually worked as an intern for the Boulder Church of Christ in Boulder, Co. Between then and 2000, he worked at various colleges including Gonzaga University, UCSD, and Mesa College.

In 1999, he began writing books on apologetics, starting with Is There a God? Questions of Science and the Bible, which was designed to answer many of the questions raised by modern scientific discovery. In 2000, he published Daniel, Prophet to the Nations, which combines a discussion of the practical applications of the book of Daniel with a detailed analysis of the prophetic content in Daniel. His third book Reasons for Belief: A Handbook of Christian Evidences, was published in 2001 to encourage the faith of believers and to help create faith in non-believers.
Oakes is also the President of the Apologetics Research Society, a California non-profit corporation, which runs an apologetics website and organizes an annual apologetics conference.

Question: Why did Jesus get baptized by John if he had no sin? Answer: This is a very good question. Jesus actually answered the question for us, although his answer is a bit enigmatic. To quote Matthew 3:15, “Let it be so now, it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Of course the question is what did Jesus mean by this? Note, he did not say he did this in order to attain righteousness. Jesus already was righteous as a man without sin. He did this to fulfill righteousness. I see a parallel to the claim of Jesus that he would fulfill (complete, bring to an end, bring to its fullness) the Law of Moses (Matthew 5:17). Exactly how Jesus fulfilled the requirements for righteousness, I am not sure, to be honest, although I will supply some suggestions below. One thing we can be sure of, which is implied in your question is that Jesus was not baptized on order to be forgiven of sin. Let me suggest a few reasons that Jesus submitted to baptism.,1. This marked the “anointing” of Jesus. This is when the Holy Spirit came on Jesus in a special way. We do not know exactly what this means. In other words the Bible does not make it clear exactly how Jesus was changed when the Holy Spirit came upon him when he was baptized by John, but we have to assume that this was a very significant moment in the life and ministry of Jesus. As it says in Matthew 3:16, it was at that moment that the Spirit of God descended on Jesus like a dove. This marked the beginning of the public ministry of Jesus. This idea is enhanced by John 1:32-34. John the Baptist told the people that God had told him the one on whom the Spirit comes is the Son of God. This anointing of Jesus was proof to John the Baptist, if not to others, of who Jesus was.,2. This event was the fulfillment of a prophecy in the form of a prefigure. The prefiguring event happened in 1 Samuel 16:13. When Samuel anointed David as scene which is a clear prefigure of the baptism of Jesus occurred. Like David, the prefigure of the Messiah, on whom the Spirit came at his anointing, the Spirit came upon Jesus when he was anointed in his baptism.,3. The baptism of Jesus served as a gesture of humility and submission of Jesus to God and to the ministry of John the Baptist. This showed the humanity of Jesus and his submission to the will of God.,4. The baptism of Jesus serves as an example to others. Jesus asked all those who would follow him to be baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Math 28:19). Jesus did not ask us to do something he was not willing to do. He did not need to be forgiven but he did need to demonstrate his submission to God and he did need to set an example to all of us in being baptized.

Jesus got baptized because he had to go through what every man went through. Not to mention the water baptism was about to cease because the baptism of the Holy Ghost was coming upon the scene, and Johns ministry was about to cease so that Jesus ministry could begin.

Matthew 16:19
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Luke 3:38 Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.

Galatians 4:6
Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”

Colossians 1:15
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

Genesis 1:26
Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

Quite simply, Jesus was baptized so he could enter into the Melchizedek priesthood so He could be the High Priest and offer Himself as a sacrifice for our sins.

More simply, and in Jesus' time and place, it was something every "good Jew" man had to do.

Something like that :)
