The Fourth Trumpet

The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them turned dark. A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night. – Rev.8:12

For some reason, the meaning of fourth trumpet has been one of the most misunderstood out of these events of wrath. For example, while reading Tim Lahaye’s “Revelation Unveiled,” he interprets the fourth seal as affecting the number of hours in a day, claiming 16 hours of darkness and 8 hours of day light, which doesn’t make any sense, because wherever there is 16 hours of darkness, it is going to be the opposite on the other end of the planet.

However, the meaning of the scripture is made clear right from the beginning. In the first verse we have the sun, moon and stars being struck so that a third of them turn dark, i.e. a third of their light is darkened.

The first thing to take notice of is that, it is the sun, moon and stars that are being darkened, and not the earth’s atmosphere. And second, they are being darkened by a third, meaning that once this fourth trumpet is sounded, the sun, moon and the stars will be missing one third of their light. This means that the earth will only receive two thirds of its normal light during both day and night. The light we receive will probably be the equivalent of a full solar eclipse, except it won’t only last for a few minutes. From that time forward, the sun, moon and stars will most likely remain in this state until after the Lord returns to end the age.

Unlike the other plagues of wrath, this fourth trumpet is not an event that seems to cause any kind of destruction or fatalities. Which brings me to the next scripture which immediately follows the fourth trumpet, which says:

“And as I observed, I heard an eagle flying overhead, calling in a loud voice, “Woe! Woe! Woe to those who dwell on the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the remaining three angels!”

So, according to the scripture above, trumpets 5, 6 and 7 are each referred to as “Woes.” And the reason why they are referred to as such, is because each of the next trumpets are demonic in nature and may be the reason for the earth receiving a third less light, kind of setting the ambience of what is about to take place by the next trumpets.

Fifth Seal/First woe = Demonic beings come up out of the Abyss to torment the inhabitants of the earth with stings like that of scorpions for five months.

Sixth Seal/Second Woe = Four evil angels and their 200 million demonic army kill a third of the earth’s inhabitants.

Seventh Seal/third woe = Satan and his angels cast out of heaven and restricted to the earth during that last 3 ½ years.
