There were many prophets down through the ages. During the time of the judges, many prophesied of their times and future times. Elijah, Elisha and Samuel were all early prophets, known only by their works. Then you have the written prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel. Finally, you have the 12 “minor” prophets; though called minor, they weren’t insignificant. They all spoke to Israel and to Judah. They weren’t well received, and were persecuted. I would like to note here, that many of these prophet’s time line was after the Assyrians had captured the northern Kingdom of Israel. The Assyrians captured, and carried away, the ten northern tribes of Israel in 721 B.C. Even the earlier prophets might not have been addressing ancient Israel, all the time. Of the written prophets, only Isaiah started his prophecies before the fall of Israel. Isaiah prophesied from 740 B.C. to about 680 B.C., but he was in Judah. In fact, Isaiah prophesied of Israel’s fall: “And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it. And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind. Then said the Lord unto Isaiah, go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and Shearjashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field; and say unto him, take heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither be fainthearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and of the son of Remaliah. Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel against thee, saying, let us go up against Judah, and vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set a king in the midst of it, thus saith the Lord God, It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass. For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken, that it be not a people. And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah's son. If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established” (Isaiah 7:1-9). Upon being carried away captive, the ten northern tribes lost their identity as God’s people. They became another people with another language. Being slaves, they couldn’t keep God’s sabbath or any of His other laws. The Assyrians migrated north and west though Georgia, the Ukraine, Poland and into Germany. The descendants of those Assyrians are now known as the German people. The ten lost tribes, of Israel, left the Assyrians in Germany and founded many other nations in northwestern Europe. Jeremiah and Ezekiel were after this time. Israel was long gone before many of these prophets spoke to them. But know this: God knows what He is doing. He spoke to Israel separately from Judah, just as He intended.
As I just pointed out, Israel was carried away captive by Assyria in 721 B.C. Today, the modern established nation of Israel, in the Middle East, does not have a right to that name; and they know it. They should call themselves Judah——because that is who they are. I guess they figure that the real Israel has been gone so long, the name was up for grabs. I believe that the god of this world, Satan, has caused this to confuse people about prophecy. To see who really has the rights, to the name Israel, we have to go all the way back to Genesis. Jacob, renamed Israel by God, was blessing Joseph’s sons: “And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim's head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh's head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn. And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day, the Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth. And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: And he held up his father's hand, to remove it from Ephraim's head unto Manasseh's head. And Joseph said unto his father, not so, my father: For this is the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head. And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: But truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations. And he blessed them that day, saying, in thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh: And he set Ephraim before Manasseh” (Genesis 48:14-20). Jacob gave his name, Israel, to the sons of Joseph. He also gave Joseph’s sons the rights to the names of Abraham and Issac. That is why the northern tribes were called Israel. The southern tribe of Judah, was just Judah. Judah can be part of Israel, but not all of Israel. Just like all bears are mammals, but not all mammals are bears.
