I believe you are all focusing on the good parts of an anonymous rep system, rather than the negatives, which is the entire reason this poll was spawned in the first place.

Quite a few people have received some very "harsh" comments within the negative rep system, and it being anonymous only allows and promotes abuse. A few things I've received within the "anonymous" form of a negative rep comment would probably equal a ban for the person who sent it, if it was within the public part of a post. These people who are such haters that they say very derogatory things within their negative rep comments are basically abusing other members with their hateful words, and that is what I disagree with so strongly.

A few of them put me off to the point where I almost never wanted to post again. I've never said anything bad or worthy of some of the comments, beyond I guess looking slightly cocky within a post that I wrote for myself about past experiences. I perceived the comments as being from a few angry and bitter women, and yet I still cannot fathom what made them say such things without even sending me a private message questioning my motives. I also never had a chance to correct them personally, because I didn't know who wrote it. Either way, this is where the problems stem in my eyes.

I understand WHY it was made anonymous in the first place, but the reasoning just promotes abuse in the opposite form. I'm sure in the past, people became angry and sent messages to those who gave them negative rep points/comments, and it probably was abusive. In the aftermath, they made them anonymous. Now however, those who give out negative rep points/comments are free to say anything they want to without repercussions for their actions.

I don't care if you remove or keep the rep system, but don't make it anonymous anymore. If someone is abusive in their comments, then you can report them. If the receiver of negative rep points is abusive to the sender, then the sender can then report them. Both ways are transparent, and it would force people to think before they say mean, unjustified things. Of all my posts, I've never received such harsh comments within the posts where people can see who wrote it. I've only received such things in the anonymous form, and they sure didn't give their names. As far as positive rep comments, almost always the person leaves their name.

See the problems here? People are abusive, and so things should be transparent. If you want to be abusive to another member, that member should have the right to defend themselves by reporting it to the mod. This would force those bitter, angry people who have nothing good to say to simply keep quiet, or to at least tone their harsh comments down a bit.

Also, if I disagree with a post, I simply state that in the post. I don't go out of my way to give them negative rep points just because I disagree with them. I cannot really understand why someone is so bitter that they want to ruin the "reputation" of another member simply for disagreeing. Unless they are bashing core beliefs as a christian, then they should keep their harsh opinions to themselves, or at least post it within the thread and let the OP at least justify the misinterpretations.

I received one comment simply for being "cocky and egostistical". I'm not a cocky person, and so I wonder why that person didn't just ask me what my intentions were in the post. Instead, they just gave me a negative rep point/comment. Such things aren't really conductive to a christian forum, and it just shows how closed minded a few members may be within the context of the posts. If you disagree with a person, don't read their posts! It's as simple as that. If you want to help someone with a perceived flaw, then discuss it with them. Do not give negative rep points/comments anonymously like that will help resolve the situation, as it only shows how bitter people can be towards others for simply being themselves.

I find people that hide behind anonymity are just cowards, afraid to speak out with their real opinions in a civil manner. Remove the anonymous part, and people will not be able to abuse the system any longer. This means less hurt feelings and greater love for one another as brothers and sisters in Christ.

I’m not exactly sure what the rep system includes. Naturally, I enjoy having the number of posts we each have included, since I have a lot of posts. I also like “rep power” because with a lot of posts comes a higher rep power. But of course, those are selfish reasons for liking those two things.

As for the little thing that says “on the right path” or “is a truth-seeker,” one might wonder if they’d have a higher rating if they told people what they want to hear, rather than standing up for what they really believe. It’s a lot more fun to stand up for what you really believe, though, no matter how you look at it.
