[h=2]Violence against women is an important topic to me so please forgive me if this is an inappropriate post. If it is perhaps the mods can remove the post.
I just wanted to raise awareness of white Ribbon Night on 31 July and White Ribbon Day 25 November.[/h]

Violence against girls and women is a serious problem in Australia. On average, one woman is killed every week as a result of partner violence.

According to the World Health Organisation

On average, 30% of women who have been in a relationship report that they have experienced some form of physical or sexual violence by their partner.
Globally, as many as 38% of murders of women are committed by their male partner.
Violence can be physical, mental, or sexual.
I was hoping the Christian community might support this through their prayers, emotional support and in other direct or practical ways.

Shocking the statistics. It's good to raise awareness and not be ignorant about it.

Thanks for raising that awareness Zoii.

That's fine Zoii...my first husband was violent and abusive and he was much bigger than me. There is no excuse for it. It is the man that actually has the problem and not the woman.

Giving you a big hug right now....I pray that God protects you as you grow up and that when the time comes, He will have you meet a wonderful Christian man who is supportive and understanding

You may know this, but even a man who calls himself a Christian may be an abusive wife beater....we have to be careful in the world

Thank you for the post, zoii. In South Africa right now, the statistics are staggering.

* someone gets raped every four minutes
* in one province alone, 37% of men admit that they have raped a woman
* one in four women who are killed, are also raped
* one in three women is killed by an intimate partner
* a woman is killed by an intimate partner every eight hours
* if all the data for violent/sexual crimes against women is correct, then 200,000 adult women are attacked every year (this does not include unreported crimes, or crimes against children)

Definitely an area that needs our prayers.

That's such a shocking set of statistics. How do women ever feel safe around men?

I would like to post some confronting art on this topic - not gruesome or graphic - but confronting. I'd like to do it because I think anyone seeing it would feel (I hope) uncomfortable and that's the point ....this is an uncomfortable topic. But if anyone is uncomfortable with a piece of art, imagine what its like for a girl being raped, or regularly beaten. Imagine a woman who cant leave her home because if her husband rings and shes not home, then she knows she will be beaten up. Imagine you are not allowed to have friends or make contact with your family. Imagine your bank account has been taken away so you have no access to money. Imagine being beaten to death or simply bashed every day of your life. ... In that context a confronting pic is pretty lame - but I wanna give people a chance to object before I do.

Wonder what part alcohol plays in this...from my military days I recall that drunkenness seems to be part of the societies of those that are link to the old British system...and alcohol seems to be more acceptable and often encouraged in certain nations...more so than in the USA

Domestic violence can happen to woman, regardless of race, age, social status, or educational level.
Domestic violence is caused by the abuser´s feeling that he has a right to control someone else, not by anything the victim does. The abuser makes a choice to be violent.
Most acts of domestic violence (more than 95%) are committed by men against their female partners

Approximately 1 in 5 women have been raped in their lifetimes within the U.S, and almost 50% of American women have experienced sexual assault other than rape during their lives.

 1 in 6 women in the U.S. have been stalked at least once in their lifetime;
and
 Nearly 1 in 3 women have experienced physical violence by an intimate partner in their lives

The statistics are little better in any other western nation...... If you think its an exaggeration ask yourself this:
If you are a man walking down a street at night and you see four young girls walking towards you.... Are you suddenly afraid or alarmed. Do you look around your for potential help.
No lets reverse it. Youre a female walking down a street at night and you see for young men walking towards you ......

Zoii,

I did not respond to this thread when I read it earlier; because my anger at men who would intentionally hurt or sexually abuse a woman prevented me from responding sensibly.

The only appropriate penalty I can think of is that they should be publicly immasculated and have both hands amputated at the shoulder. At least that would eliminate repeat offenders.

After that they should be forgiven.

I don't know how it is (or was) in Australia, but in the US, DV against women is not (and was not) considered to be acceptable or normal behavior. It is not a natural outgrowth of masculinity.

Even as early as the 1800s, wife-beaters were subjected to public floggings and other forms of public shame when they were found out. Even though most men "wore the pants" at that time, it was still not considered OK for them to treat their wives that way.

I believe the prevalence of that so-called 'entertainment' form from the bowels of Hell - pornography, has a lot to answer for.

I don't think anyone would suggest in the USA its NORMAL behaviour. BUT anyone who knows the statistics would say its COMMON behaviour, and not just in USA, but Australia and every other nation across the world. Its for this reason I would ask Christians to think about women who suffer on the night of 31 July, and do something that counts...do something that says YOU wont allow this..... even if its an oath to yourself that if u suspect something like this in your neighbourhood will you act and not turn a blind eye. I know via my mother the circumstances of women in the most cruel situations at the hands of their sadistic and violent partner..... don't abandon them by turning a blind eye...PLEASE. Say a prayer and make an oath - 31 July.... better still volunteer your services for more direct help.

White Ribbon Night is this Friday in Australia. I would be grateful if this community would make a commitment to pray on Friday night, commit to NEVER ignoring domestic violence or sexual assault you know to be taking place, and if possible... do something to take direct action such as helping just one day in a womens refuge centre. If you can do this then I send you everything positive I have in my heart n mind :)
