I just listened to American Pie by Don Mclean...

...and I feel such a deep profound sadness.
I understand that human nature is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.
I know if one was black, or any minority in the 50's or 60's, or even the 70's, it is far better now. I realize that it is generally better for woman today. And disabled people. And immigrants. And other groups as well
I know the 1950's and 60's had there share of issues.
But it just seems to me as a society we have lost what little innocence that was remaining the last decade or so.
We were not as educated back then, not as sophisticated as now. But at what price does all of this come?
God is never wrong. Ever. To know good from evil is not power, it is a horror.
Better not to have ever known sin, not to know the lusts of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.
It is all so fleeting, and comes at such a irrevocable price.
I look at my children, so young and innocent, enjoying their little world.
I know why, most anyone that reaches a certain age knows why Solomon said it is a vapor, it amounts to nothing.
How in the world do atheists manage? It seems like such a bleak and hopeless way to live. It can be hard enough even with God at times.
It would be nice if we could retain that youthful pessimism from our younger days, when our eyes were not as wide open.
I feel bad for kids today. They grow up with a shorter span of that, and in a era that just feels so different, no matter where they are, city or country, they can't escape the oppressiveness of it all.
And this coming from someone who has a generally optimistic view of life, who usually envisions the hope of Sunday, after the darkness of Friday.
God help us, and God watch over us.

I do agree with you. The availability of evil, seeping in from the internet, has and will continually get worse. I am a teacher in a private Christian school. Just yesterday, I was substituting in a computer lab. The students had an assignment to do, which included a simple game that was set up with other schools. Students would compete, as they would eat up a continuous amount of little circles that would make their orbs grow in size and thus be able to rule or override smaller attackers. However, as I leaned over and began to read the names of the 'meanies, the viruses and the enemies" of the blobs that were chasing the students, I was in total shock. The actual names were extremely vulgar, sexually perverted, and totally demonic! I cannot spell nor reveal those nasty names that were going across the screens of my 7th grader's monitors. And, to make things worst, when the game was over, a simple click on the upper right hand side that would reveal the top 12 winners of the segment, read like a triple X rated Porno movie rental site!!!!! This website itself, and the educational merits of the games included has been highly approved by the school board...but alas....evil has risen it's head like a dragon on a revenge!

I agree too, the Internet does increase ones knowledge of such things though on the other hand before the Internet children still knew bad words and of sexual perversion etc.. they knew of it from hearing their parents or witnessed it from others etc. who cursed and were preverted...even today I hear of people saying my little Johnny of four says a lot of bad words etc.. I guess children still learn these words etc. one way or another if their exposed to such things. Which it all has been around for a very long time.

I see no difference between what we were and what the young are like today. The only think that has changed is we're more weatherworn. That's not a bad thing.

As for youthful pessimism? I'm only pessimist directly in the middle of a huge storm. My problem is and always has been my optimism. I keep trying to season it with realism. (I don't know how I'm doing with that though. lol) I wasn't a pessimist as a kid, nor am I now.

Einstein believed the creation of atomic energy didn't cause any issues mankind didn't already have. I don't think we've lost our innocence, I simply believe things are just more publicized now. People KNEW this stuff existed. It was discussed. It just wasn't displayed all over tv and internet.....the cure (in my opinion) is to turn it off.....turn off the television and internet, and go outside for a while to commune with God, read a book (not an ebook on another screen), turn off the phones for a while, be still and know He is God.
I think it was Rush Limbaugh (no I am not a Rush fan) who said a help (not a cure) for depression was to turn off all electronics, put away newspapers and stay away from all news for a few weeks. I tried it. It helped me.

As a note of trivia... it has been said that Don Mc Lean wrote that song about the death of Buddy Holly. The "day the music died".... and how he "read about his widowed bride..."

I heard a rumor that the airplane he was on, that crashed, was named the "American Pie".... I don't know if that's true, or not.

I grew up in Buddy Holly's hometown, so this stuff interests me a little bit...

Great song, though. If you get a chance to hear a more recent recording of him singing it, do it.... his voice got a whole lot mellower and smoother over the years.... good stuff.

It is about the death of Buddy Holly...he also references the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens who were on the plane with Holly.
