I've been going through depression since I was 13. I use to do things to myself and finally stopped this year. But I am still depressed

There are so many layers to depression. Proverbs 17:22- A joyful heart is good medicine. I assume you are a follower of Jesus Christ, if you can get to a place that is isolated and just force out all the praise and worship you can to the Lord, whether it feels fake or not- just step in and get to a place where you just don't care about being genuine or not. Throw yourself into praise, and thankfulness. The spirit of heaviness will leave. In time you'll find the Holy Spirit will show you ways to do this in ordinary situations- driving on the highway, walking in the mall, school, work...I need to do this more, but the distractions and confusion tend to make us one dimensional in focus. Worth a try.
~Blessings!

You are not alone! In history, there were many great Christians who struggled with depression. Today there are still Christians who struggle with it. There are also GREAT support groups for those struggling. I would recommend you find one of those if you can :) God bless you!!

Cocopuff? I so understand you. I too have suffered with this. and PTSD.

**THERE IS NO MAGIC PILL...OR OVERNIGHT CURE***

There are a few things...that do help. Certain foods affect your mind. (and so does lack of exercise) I did an experiment recently.

(after my doctor got on me about my health) So ...it took 3 days...of 1 hr...of exercise...until i felt...alive. I was also...in a deep depression. So I cut out out sugars and fried foods..and ate...healthy. IT WORKED. ...yeah......i'm back to my old habits...but i just wanted to share.....FOOD affects MOOD. I live in a small apartment...but there are videos...you can do...in your home. Rubber Bands...to help tone. And even walking...or jumping in place...for 10 min..will raise your heart rate.

Please don't give in to your depression. There is hope. and healing. I'll pray for you!!! That you find an alleviation of your symptoms. God is always with you!!!! ....GBU

Yes, sugar is in EVERYTHING nowadays. you literally cannot eat a piece of dry bread without getting a healthy dose of it. Along those lines, hydration- drink half your weight in ounces of bottled water a day, maybe more during these hot summer months. You'd be surprised how drained just mere dehydration can make you feel.

I was diagnosed with chronic depression at 19 years of age. I've dealt with it ever since. Sometimes I hit really low points, sometimes I am better. Even at my best, I am still quite depressed. Medications have minimal effect. Same with counseling, same with diet and exercise. Depression ain't no joke. It's a disease, and for some people, it can be very debilitating.

1) A few weeks of intense DAILY (longer than one hour) communion and bible study with the Lord usually help me. Really.

2) every day go on a 30-45 minute prayer walk with the Lord- talk to him...about anything, out loud. It can be morning or night. I usually do night because I can talk out loud without people staring at me.

One thing that might cheer you up is if you read the New Testament to the Bible, if you haven't already.

Hi Coco

I like this verse about being down
I'm not even sure what it means, but I like it

My soul is cast down within me;
therefore I remember you
from the land of Jordan and of Hermon,
from Mount Mizar.
7
Deep calls to deep
at the roar of your waterfalls;
all your breakers and your waves
have gone over me.

For girls, depression can be a result of hormonal changes in the body. I got depressed about age 12, and it continued till I was 17 or 18. I began to realize it corresponded to monthly cycles, and did some practical things to help. Even though I was not a Christian, I know God was helping me find these ways of coping.

So, you just may outgrow it!

But if not, you might want to talk to a school counselor. They can send you on to a proper doctor if it really is depression. My advice for now is to read the Psalms. They helped me when I became very depressed due to severe Rheumatoid Arthritis and not being able to do anything, and being in so much physical pain.

God is there for you, ask him to help you.

"Heavenly Father, I pray you would help the OP to get some help for her current depression, and that you would also show her your love! Let the pages of the Bible become alive for her, and give her the hope that knowing you brings. In Jesus name I pray, Amen."

This is the verse God gave me during this period of time, which is also the same verse posted above, but in a different translation.

"5 Why am I so depressed?
Why this turmoil within me?
Put your hope in God, for I will still praise Him,
my Savior and my God." Psalm 42:5

Unprocessed pain always leads to anger anxiety and depression...which lead to self harming/coping skills. It takes effort to recognize and process emotional pain. From feeling unloved, insignificant, disregarded etc etc. Putting words on the pain you feel is the first step in processing it. Often when we feel for exampled, unloved, we take it to the next level and tell ourselves we must be unloveable. In order to speak truth to the pain we feel, whatever it is, we must identify it and then say.....man, I really feel unloved but the truth is that i am lovable and significant.

well said, Sirk,

mostly it stems from our childhood, whether we know or can accept it or not...

but, IF Jesus calls us to serve Him, He will teach us how to over-come and also how to repent
and leave those old bondages behind and prepare for us all that He has in store for us to become
His called and chosen in Holy Love...with this precious promise, we can only move forward and become
His true inheritors...
