What's your opinion about it?
for example reading or watching Harry Porter etc.
as a christian, is it good or bad.
I think magic is a great sin.

Books like Harry Potter promotes witchcraft. Christian children shouldn't be reading anything that promotes wickedness as good. Which is all you have in the media today, many forms of wickedness promoted as good.

Like all things it depends if this is something that will encourage you to do this in your life. People are fine watching a film or tv show about drugs or drink addiction, but if the person watching is recovering then this may lead to them stumbling and they should not watch it.

there is nothing wrong with reading books or watching films on fictional fantasy. Where do you draw the line. I have heard people foaming at the mouth ready to burn Harry Potter books, but then on the other hand saying how good Lord of the Rings is, yet there is no difference between the two when comparing casting spells and other magic. What about Lion Witch and Wardrobe? That has witchcraft and magic in it as well.

The problem with Harry Potter is that although it is fictional, it is based on a human on earth in this time period, which has an instant appeal to younger people. I have seen some children in book shop with Harry Potter book clasped in one hand while browsing the real occult books. This is where things can get out of hand and where maturity and discresion comes in.

Some books/movies place emphasis on the magic itself. Others use magic as a tool to tell a story. Personally if there is a lot of emphasis on magic, such as Harry Potter, I won't deal with it. But if magic is just used to aid the story, such as Lord of the Rings, then I'm ok with it.
But those are my beliefs and if someone else feels different I'm not going to argue. It's up to your personal conviction, regardless of the opinion of others.

Keep in mind the forums are a place to ask questions or open topics and then wait. You posted your question at time zones which, in America, would be anywhere from 6 am to 3 am. And while the site is international much of what goes on is based around American time zones.
Just have to be patient in waiting for answers.
Also you posted this in the Family section, which is not a heavily read section, not entirely fitting for your questions. So that can lower the amount of answers you receive.

Uhm I have read and watched Harry Potter and havent had demons following me around because of it. It is indeed a trap to get people interested into witchcraft (which it is a abomination) but giving it a lot of attention will make things only worse. Not everyone who reads and watches it will eventually become a witch. Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings is very dangerous and I will not advise anyone to watch it. Simply because there is just SOOO much in there that people shouldnt know but people who have no idea and just watch it for fun will prolly just not get into the witchcraft behind it. Is it okay for Christians to watch that kind of stuff - No, at least not in my opinion.

It's a good question. I think like Ugly, that as long as it's part of the fantasy of the
story line, it does not promote witchcraft and it's harmless to the person watching it.
In that they just watch it for entertainment value and nothing else. Then it's doubtful
it wil be thought as anything than it actually is - harmless fun.

However for some people it is wrong to watch such movies, as it will arouse their interest
in witchcraft and each person will have their own level at which it stops being entertainment
and starts to become something more.

For me I watched the first few Harry Potter films but I stopped watching the rest of the
series as they got darker. I felt that in the later films the harmless fun was becoming
an introduction into witchcraft and for me it just felt wrong.

I think I saw the first two Lord of the Ring films, but after that it became too violent
and graphic for me.

One thing to note is that many writers research their subject carefully.
There is no doubt in my mind that JK Rowling did research into witchcraft due to
the terminologies and names of items in the films. So although in the main it is
harmless fantasy, without realising it you are actually been introduced to witchcraft.

I never watch any films about Satan like the Exorcist for example, as for me at least,
that is going too far in that such films glorify Satan.

I also can't help but wonder about the spiritual state of people who think up such plots.

i dont think my mind is the ultimate opinion maker. i think we should always look for other's view points as they might think better than us and the lord might be more pleased with them.

Play it safe and have nothing to do with witchcraft.. Or anything to do with the occult...

Galatians 5 : KJV
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Is reading a story book about Harry Potter the same as practicing witchcraft or is it just reading a book?

How many people here avoid everything dealing with the occult and witchcraft? No one. You'd be surprised that even objects in ones house has pagan beginnings. Even those pretty Disney princess movies people let their little girls pretend to be is considered witchcraft. So be careful on what one says is or isn't right especially if you could be guilty of the same and not know it.

I've watched all the Harry Potter and read the books probably twice each. I'm no more interested in witchcraft than I was before I knew Harry Potter existed. It's amazing what having rational thinking and not blindly copying what you see, hear, and read will do for you in life. Even horror movies that 'glorify satan' as some poster put it so charmingly aren't negatively affecting unless you let them be.

I think things like Harry Potter are innocent enough in the fact that they paint the picture that wizardry/magic and the such aren't really real and are complete and total fiction.... But we know magic is an art of the Devil and not to touch that with a ten foot pole. lol. I don't think anyone in the Occult arrived there threw means of Harry Potter though

It is just a nonfiction book I was a child when these books came out and I never once believed in it and or had to be taught it was not real. You might as well cancel Santa, easter bunny, and Halloween too. Since these also take glory away from God. It makes all the difference if you believe in magic or not. How does one understand the nonsense of magic if they are never allowed to read what magic is? I read into other religions just so I have a better apologetic response to people who believe differently. The only way to understand something is to gain knowledge on the subject. As a kid, I knew what was real and when I read a book with magic or watched movies it gave me the knowledge of what was not real. Fight more important battles!

I remember I was hosting a bible study at my place and the study leader's wife made a very loud comment that I owned rather twisted books. I was floored and at a loss as to what she meant. I asked her to explain. She grabbed a book off the shelf and said it had to do with the occult. She was holding up a copy of "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" by C.S. Lewis. The other one she pointed to was "The Goblin and The Princess" by George MacDonald, he was a friend and contemporary of C.S. Lewis and also a christian. This was before the "Lord of the Rings" movies so those book covers were also what she considered twisted.
These characters were used for a specific purpose and with important messages. That is the reason I can't make a blanket pronouncement against all books involving magic and magicians.

I honestly think its okay. I mean, its no marylen Manson. You don't have to believe it. I love fantasy. Magic exists in fantasy, but its not real. I know real magic is evil. But their is a difference between the two.
Imo anyway…

Cs lewis was religious. There is nothing wrong with jrr tolkeins lord of the rings and the hobbit, and the simarillions. In love those books. Not a fan of narnia but I digress.

I agree with you on that point:) magic in fantasy books is very different from magic in teal life
