Almost six months ago my hours at my current job were cut.Since then I've put in applications for other jobs but nothing has come of it.I've either been rejected or haven't gotten a response from the places I applied to.I've asked the LORD to give me favor and open doors for me to get a better job or restore my hours.I've looked into getting a GED (I never graduated high school)but I don't think I can pass the test.I've never been good at algebra and geometry is like a foreign language to me.Sometimes I feel like just giving up.Should I keep applying for jobs or just wait?As for getting my hours back I don't see that happening anytime soon.May God give me strength and patience during this trial(Thank you in advance for your responses)

If you don't even have a GED, then I should think there is not even a question that should be you first and highest priority. Hardly anyone is going to hire you for a decent job without at least that much to show them.

Try going into your states unemployment office and ask them for assistance in finding a job. By all means find a job. The bible teaches that he who will not work shall not eat.

Don't give up. Maybe you can take some evening classes. Here they have free classes at the middle school for those trying to get their GED and for those who are trying to be more proficient at reading, maybe they have something like that for math. Best wishes to you. I will pray that a door opens up for you soon. Blessings.

The only way you know if you'd pass the GED is to take it. What do you have to lose? And, if you don't pass it? Get the books that teach you how to pass it. You can write, so you can probably pass one.

Since you're not good with geometry or algebra, don't apply for jobs that require geometry or algebra. Frankly, I stink at both, but I was a bookkeeper for a while. They have these things called calculators. ;)

Give up applying for jobs by filling out applications. If you're going in cold and asking to fill one out, of course they'll let you fill one out. I also had the job of throwing out old applications whenever we needed room for the new ones. No one ever looked at application, unless someone came in because they heard a job was opening and had the qualifications. The only thing filling out applications does, if you're going in cold, is exercise your finger muscles.

10% of all jobs are given to people who walk-in or find an ad in the want ads. The rest are found by networking. i.e. telling everyone that you need a job doing (and fill in whatever you do in this spot), and then asking if they know anyone hiring. And, if they don't, then ask them to ask their friends. And, the next time you see them, ask them if their friends know of any job. (Because frankly, unless you have a special expertise, friends won't ask for you, until they realize they have to answer to you, if they don't ask.) Or through volunteering. If you volunteer to help an organization and are willing to put in hard effort, and you show up when you say you're coming, those kind of things lead to real jobs. Take the initiative. Do what others don't want to do. Prove your worth.

And one last piece of advice. You're coming off as "poor-poor-me. I'm dumb as a doornail, can't do anything, and hope to stumble into something -- or not." Project that while looking for a job, and I can guarantee you won't ever get a job. Be more positive. Play up your skills. Don't bring up the negative. Be friendly and helpful. That's how to get jobs.

(My expertise -- resume writer who networked with others that helped people get jobs, and I listened to them. Plus, I had to get jobs in my life, and got them every which way possible -- from want ads, to word-of-mouth, to cold-calling for jobs, to talking a social service business into hiring two people with no educational backgrounds as group home parents -- hubby and me. :))

I taught GED Prep for a while. Here is a little secret. At least 80% of the tests are nothing more than reading comprehension and remembering what you read so you can answer questions about that text.

It might be a good investment to buy beginning geometry and algebra books. It's been a long time since I studied, but I think I enjoyed both those subjects.

Mario, I have been lucky-- but I am unlucky with applications. People have hired me after meeting me, so I get how frustrating the application-first process can be a headache and a heartache. Not to mention, it gets repetitive.

Craigslist is good for ideas, but never post your home address, social, or resume-- unless you've done your homework.
I also suggest sharing with your local friends on Facebook. Ask for prayer and even ask for certain times to pray for you (while you go to apply, interview, first day on the job, etc.). I don't suggest broadcasting your need via a public status update, but do tap those who care about you.

Friends are honest, so some of them may sound condescending. But ask them to quiz you, or ask if you can pitch your idea for the job you really want. Of course, there is the money/living aspect, but there is also the "is it going to kill me" question to consider. Don't just pray for the money, pray for direction. But work with what you've got (skills, interests, openings, current discernment) and God will work with you.

For local ideas: Go to libraries, they offer free classes. Go to coffee shops, they often have local ads for employment. Contact Vocational Rehabilitation - California Department of Rehabilitation and see if they can help. (That is a CA group to help people find work.) Also, Goodwill is a foot-in-the-door for many people. Then there are always churches, especially in the burbs.
Go to the largest ones in your area for classes and ads. But don't overlook the smaller ones.

I was two weeks from not having a place to live.
God supplied in a conversation at a Target.
He also allowed me to grow through the unemployment phase.
Remember: He is with you, regardless of your health, wealth, or employment status.

That's meant to encourage, not shame.
