As ministers of the gospel, and called to love and comfort others just as Christ comforted us, how do we exercise self control and tame our tongues. Knowing when to be silent and when to speak. On a forum such as this, which I am blessed to have found and overjoyed to participate in, and probably overly zealous in posting quickly ...

how do we excercise being quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger ?
i know zealousness without self control is foolishness and though I have good intentions i feel as if I may have posted some things in zeal which I was not equipped to comment on.

i guess we who lose control of our zeal and open our mouths prematurely need a bit of patience and grace and to be still and listen to Holy Spirit :).

I type out my response....then take a few minutes to pray before posting...sometimes I spend a long time typing but never post because I realize it will not help the OP and isn't for God's glory but my own vanity to appear witty or wise.

Everyone has an opinion.. I guess the trick is to base your opinion on biblical facts, then your responses aren't just what you think, but have a foundation of truth. Sometimes its necessary to be direct, the truth usually has a little salt and can sting, which was often demonstrated when Christ responded to the pharisees.

You have already gained the right mindset. Once a problem arises from our hearts we have gained notice of sin. Now you can move forward with Gods Word and start to practice discipline of the tongue. This will take practice but always think before you speak. Always think with others feelings in mind. But never be afraid to speak truth but do it kindly and with respect.

Judging by my own experience on this site, there is sometimes the temptation to lash out at people. When we do that, we lose our opportunity to prove our point. Always keep on topic. Never speak in anger. Proving a point is far more rewarding than getting back at someone.

Hey, its actually very easy - you just do it. Don't think how to do it. Just do it. If you need inspiration - read Proverbs. There is a lot on it.

But basically whatever you want to do - stop asking yourself how to do it. Know what result you want (in this case self-restraint) and just act like you have achieved it. Just pray and do it. Everything else is a waste of time and self-delusion. Whatever it is that you need God will provide for you. So trust in Him, ask Him for help and go for it.

I have James 1.19 on my steering wheel. Helps keep things light while driving and keeps me humble -- most of the time.
