My husband and I have two babies of our own but have been talking about adopting a child for a while now. Any advice from someone who has gone through the whole process?

It’s wonderful to hear that you’re thinking about adopting a child! A very good friend of mine found the Orphan Care Initiative website helpful – hope you will find it useful, as well. Sending prayers your way! May the Lord bless you and give you direction, wisdom, and His peace in this very important decision.

Wow! You two are talking again! Cool! I'd give time for your marriage before adopting though. Just until you're both comfortable with each other again.

I also know it's cheaper to adopt outside the US than to adopt in the US, even though it often means you have to spend weeks, months in the other country first. It's still cheaper. (Last I heard, it costs $40,000 to adopt a child in the US.)

First of all, thank God for families like yours...

a little background... I am an adoptee. My older brother and I (bio brothers) were adopted when he was 3 and I was about 1... back in the late 50's...
After that, my parents were among several people at our church that founded a maternity home and adoption agency.. the first one in Texas that was operated by the Church of Christ.

So, I've been "involved" in adoption pretty much all my life.

I would strongly suggest you discuss this with a Christian based adoption agency.. there are a lot of questions to consider... do you want to go with open adoption, or closed adoption? Do you have a preference as to the age of the child... newborn, or older? Is race an issue? Special needs children? Please try to find a Christian based agency.... state run agencies are usually good, but do not consider any religious preferences, etc...

Preferably, go with an agency that does an in-depth background "matching" process... home studies, etc...

Most importantly, be patient, and wait for God's timing... if you've prayed fervently for the "right" child, He will provide... don't try to short-circuit that process.

Lots more advice, as an adoptee, but that can wait, I suppose.

I don't know for sure what the costs are for a domestic (US) adoption, but if it's around $40,000, an international adoption most likely won't be much, if any, cheaper.

I am friends with a couple in their 30's who just adopted their 3rd child internationally, and the cost was about $40,000 (along with 2 trips to the child's birth country for court dates.) Of course, it can also depend on where you're adopting from and what agency you go through. I know the cost is extremely intimidating, but some agencies have funds and forms of financial aid for those who need it.

I don't know if I'm allowed to name my agency (a mod can surely delete this from my post), but I was adopted through Holt International Children's Services, and I believe in their work 200%. Holt was founded by Harry and Bertha Holt, a farming couple from Oregon, who had 6 children of their own, but adopted 8 more from Korea and started an orphanage there because they believe God was calling them to help children who were abandoned after the Korean War.

They based their organization on Isaiah 43:5 -- "Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bring your children from the east, and gather you from the west."

Today, Holt has active programs in 13 countries. Many of the people who work on their staff are Holt adoptees (or parents of Holt adoptees) themselves.

My parents are both a different race than I am but they are the best parents God could have ever hand-picked for me. (Not that we didn't have plenty of ups and downs, of course. But they are my Mom and Dad, without a doubt, and nothing could ever change that.)

God bless you and your husband in deciding if, how, and when you will be adding to your family through adoption.

Sounds like everything really went well for you.

But I had an entirely opposite experience.

When I was little my parents always hoped someone would adopt me,
but they had no such luck.

The probably should have offered more money.

The scripture says that we have received the Spirit of adoption as sons and daughters and now we are children of our Heavenly Father. We are now heirs with our Heavenly Father and joint heirs with our Lord Jesus Christ because of what His only begotten Son did for us at the Cross of Calvary.

Because of you and your husband Christlikeness, you are doing the same thing God has done for us.

Heavenly Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus. And I ask and pray that you make all grace abound to this family. In Jesus name I pray and ask, Amen.
